  • Among the developed bio-degradable polymer films as compared with transparent film(White), black polymer film was significantly more effective for controlling weeds in red pepper. Also, we found that white and black polymer mulching had 81.8% and 97.9% of managing weed controlling effects in rice, respectively. Compared to non-mulched rice paddy with water supply, the non-mulched rice paddy without any water supply has stopped its growth at 41 days after transplanting, while polymer-mulched rice paddy without water supply had about 60% of normally growing rice plants. This shows the polymer treatment has a remarkable effect on water and power saving, solution of herbicidal resistance, avoidance of herbicidal influence to eco-system etc. When the naturally decomposing polymer was used, a temperature was elevated as high as $4.7^{\circ}C$ on maximum and $2.6^{\circ}C$ on average. Also the naturally decomposing polymer accelerated rooting by 7 days and lowered a stress level from transplanting. The weed control effect mulched by polymer was remarkable as 98.7%. The polymer now, after 294 days treated on the rice paddy, has been completely decomposed.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate the relative importance of food labelling on organic and country-of-origin of tofu. The relative importance of three Tofu attributes shows that the country-of-origin is the most important and an organic labelling and price are followed in order. The result is that if two attributes, an organic labelling and the country-of-origin are taken into account, organic soybeans produced in Korea gets the highest value and non-organic soybeans produced in Korea, organic soybeans produced in USA, and others are followed in order. For respondents who have children under 6 years or under 18 years, the importance of an organic labelling increased compared to those whose children do not fall into that age. The results of this study show that the country of origin, especially domestically produced products, is more importantly recognized than the organic labeling to consumers.

  • Sorption and desorption processes play an important role in the transport and fate of organic contaminants in subsurface system. In this study, sorption and desorption characteristics of atrazine in 7 soils selected at the Gwangju area were investigated. Soil organic carbon contents ranged from 0.42 to 2.82%. Sorption and desorption experiments were performed in batch slurries. Sorption distribution coefficient ($K_d$) of atrazine were ranged from 0.48 to 3.26 l/kg and $K_d$ value increased with increasing organic carbon contents except of Kyongbang and Youngdong soils. Single desorption data were analyzed by the three-site desorption model including equilibrium, non-equilibrium and non-desorbable site. Non-desorbable site fractions of atrazine in all soils were enumerated and non-desorbable atrazine was observed in seriesdilution desorption experiment. Sorption/desorption hysteresis was also observed in the series-dilution desorption experiment.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes of free sugars, non-volatile organic and fatty acids in flue-cured leaf tobacco during aging. The threshed leaf tobacco(B1O and C1L) produced in 2002 crop year was aged for 21 month in warehouse of Oc-Cheon Leaf Tobacco Processing Factory. The leaf tobacco were sampled at three month intervals for analysis of free sugars, non-volatile organic and fatty acids. The major free sugars of flue-cured were glucose and fructose regardless of tobacco grades. After aging period of 21 months, the contents of glucose and fructose showed a tendency to slightly decrease, and there was no appreciable change in the contents of sucrose in B1O and C1L grades. The major compound of non-volatile organic acid and fatty acid were malic, oxalic and citric, linolenic, linoleic and palmitic acid regardless of tobacco grade. After aging period of 21 months, the contents of malic, malonic, oxalic and fumaric acid showed a tendency to slightly decrease, whereas succinic acid was slightly increased, and maleic acid was not changed in B1O and C1L grades. The decreases in fatty acid contents in B1O and C1L grade tobacco loaves after 21 month aging were 16.5% and 9.8%, respectively. The decreases in linolenic acid contents in two grades were the highest, showing 22.1% and 12.0% reduction after 21 month aging.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of salt concentrations (1,2 and 37)) and storage periods on the characteristics of Kakdugi (Korea seasoned pickles of cubed radish roots) stored at $20^{\circ}C$. The sensory characteristics, pH, titratable acidity, non-volatile organic acids were measured. The results of sensory evaluation on Kakdugi containing 1,2 or 30% sodium chloride stored for 4 or 8 days indicated that there were significant differences among them expecially ill firmness, crispness and salty taste. As storage period increased, titratable acidity, sour taste, non-volatile organic acid contents of the samples increased. The changes were greater in Kakdugi with 2% sodium chloride. Major non-volatile organic acids were identified as lactic acid, citric acid and succinic acid. The sour taste of Kakdugi was closely related to the contents of non-volatile organic acid and titratable acidity.

  • To identify a non-acylguanidine NHE-1 inhibitor, an acylguanidne group was replaced with an imidazole group in the potent NHE-1 inhibitors with furan or benzothiphene core template, found from our previous studies. We synthesized and biologically evaluated 4-heteroaryl-2-amino-5-methylimidazole derivatives. All those imidazole compounds (16-18) represented the potent NHE-1 inhibitory activities, similar to the corresponding acylguanidine compounds.

  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of phytase, organic acids and their interaction on body weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, carcass yield and tibia ash. A total of 680 three-day old Japanese quail chicks (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were assigned to 20 battery brooders, 34 chicks in each. The experimental period lasted 35 days. The treatment groups employed were: 1) a positive control which included 3.5 g available phosphorus (AP)/kg diet and 10 g Ca/kg diet; 2) a negative control which included 2 g AP/kg diet and 8 g Ca/kg diet, 3) negative control diet supplemented with either 300 FTU phytase/kg diet (phytase) or 4) 2.5 g organic acid (lactic acid+formic acid)/kg diet (organic acid); or 5) 300 FTU phytase/kg diet+2.5 g organic acid/kg diet (phytase+organic acid). All birds were fed with the positive control diet for a week and then transferred to the dietary treatments. At the end of the study, there were no differences (p>0.005) among the groups in body weight, weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio and carcass yield. Tibia ash, however, was reduced (p<0.001) for quails fed the negative control diet containing a low-level of AP compared to the positive control diet containing adequate AP. The addition of phytase, organic acid or phytase+organic acid to the diets containing the low-level of AP improved (p<0.001) tibia ash. On the other hand, an extra synergistic effect of phytase and organic acid on tibia ash was not determined. This study demonstrated that it may be possible to reduce supplemental level of inorganic P with phytase and/or organic acid supplementation for quail diets without adverse effect on performance and tibia ash.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes in composition of the non-volatile organic acid, fatty acid and polyphenolic compounds during air-curing in burley tobacco leaves, and the effect of curing methods on the contents in air-cured leaves. The air-cured variety, (Nicotiana tabacum cv KB108) was normally grown at the Chonju tobacco experiment station in 1998. Plants designated for the each curing methods were harvested on the same date, and the ripe leaves for primed curing were harvested at the tenth leaf position from the top on the stalk. The major compounds of non-volatile organic acid and fatty acid were malic, citric, oxalic, palmitic, and linolenic acid. The concentrations of malic acid, unsaturated fatty acids, chlorogenic acid and rutin in cured leaves were remarkably decreased during curing, while citric acid was increased. The changes of these compounds showed the similar pattern during both primed and stalk curing. In connection with curing methods, the contents of malic, linoleic and linolenic acid were higher in excessive cured leaves than those in primed cured or stalk cured leaves, while the content of citric acid was lower in excessive cured leaves than that in primed cured or stalk cured leaves.

Debates on the isolation distances to segregate fields with GM crops from fields with non-GM crops for the establishment of their coexistence (GM과 non-GM 작물의 공존제도의 정착을 위한 포장의 격리거리에 관한 고찰)

  • The coexistence policy of GM and non-GM crops is still on the debates in EU since “the recommendation on guidelines for the development of national strategies and best practices to ensure the coexistence of GM crops with conventional and organic farming” has been reported in 2003. The major issues are maximum tolerance level of GMO admixture and minimum isolation distances of GM fields with others including conventional, organic and seeds production. Majority of member states in EU proposed that the tolerance level of GMO admixture must be more strictly controlled, in particular in the fields for organic crops and seeds production. To this end, it was proposed that minimum isolation distances to segregate GM crops from fields with organic crops and seeds production need to be further extended than those of conventional crops since cross pollination with other crops adjacent GM fields is known as the most prevalent source for GMO contamination. In these circumstances, it is strongly suggested that the current legislations need to be revised including the minimum isolation distances of fields for each species before field cultivation for a commercial GM crop is approved for the first time in South Korea.
