  • Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon non-neoplastic condition of the joints, forming multiple cartilaginous nodules in the synovium. The lesion usually tends to involve large joints, and the occurrence in the small joint of foot is very rare. We would like to report a case of synovial chondromatosis which was confused with Freiberg infarction in the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint of the foot.

  • Here represents a case of aneurysmal bone cyst which is very rare non neoplastic bone tumor especially in rib. The aneurysmal bone cyst usually arises from long bones of the upper and lower extemities and tt-e spine, which together account for 60 to 70 per cent of cases. In this case the tumor is found in right ninth rib on routine chest X-ray. It is resected successfully and the result is excellent.

  • Many varieties of space-occupying lesions can occur in the mediastinum. During the twenty-three-year period 1966-1988, we had experienced the 151 cases of primary mediastinal tumors and cysts at the Thoracic k Cardiovascular Dept., CUMC. The most common histologic types were thymomas and germ cell tumors, followed by neurogenic tumors and lymphomas. Most non-neoplastic lesions were granulomatous lesions and cysts. The mediastinal tumors were often asymptomatic, the malignant tumors in 35.4%, the benign tumors and cysts in 72.8% of the cases. The most common symptom was pain, which occurred in one-fourth of the patients. The most useful diagnostic method was X-ray examination of the chest. However, a final diagnosis could usually be made only at operation. Nine malignant tumors[30.0%] were excised radically, 17[56.7%] palliatively and 4[13.3%] were only biopsied. Almost all benign tumors except tuberculous lymphadenitis were radically excised. Fourteen patients received postoperative radiation therapy and 17 received chemotherapy. The postoperative complications were developed in 15[11.7%] and hospital mortality was 0.8%.

  • Primary malignant lymphomas of the lung are rare and known often to be localized, solitary pulmonary lesions, in chest radiograph. Because they are highly treatable contrast to the other primary lung cancer, the distinction is important. A 35-year old man who was admitted for a solitary pulmonary nodule in the right middle lobe. Percutaneous needle aspiration disclosed diffuse, small cell lymphoma. Bone marrow biopsy showed no evidence of neoplastic lymphoid cell infiltration. There were a walnut sized mass involving right middle lobe with a small satellite nodule at 2cm distal to the right upper lobe bronchial orifice. The histopathology of the bilobectomized specimen showed diffuse, small cell, malignant, non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma. Immunologic subtype was defined as B-cell type.

  • Giant cell reparative granuloma(GCRG) is a non-neoplastic rapidly expanding and locally destructive tumor that occurs almost exclusively within the mandible and maxilla. A 58-year-old man, complained of a mass on the left infra-auricular area starting 2 months ago. The radiologic finding suggests a mass that originate from mandible, pathology diagnosed the lesion as a giant cell reparative granuloma. The tumor was surgically excised without complications. We report the case with a review of literature.

  • A 11-year-old, female Russian Blue cat was presented with anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea lasting for 3 days. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic, non-circumferential, and eccentrically formed intestinal loop with altered wall layering and thickening of the tunica muscularis. After surgical resection, histopathologic examination confirmed an infiltrative, round-cell neoplasm composed of sheets and cords of neoplastic mast cells within a fibrotic, edematous stroma. The cat was alive and healthy 6 months after surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an intestinal mast cell tumor in a Russian Blue cat in South Korea.

  • Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an easy convenient non-invasive method in the diagnosis of superficial palpable masses. The cytologic findings by FNAC of reactive and neoplastic lesions in various organs including breast, lymph node, thyroid, salivary gland, etc., have been described, but, those of soft tissue lesions including proliferative fasciitis are relatively rare to find. We recently experienced a case of FNAC of proliferative fasciitis in the left back of a 72-year-old male. The FNAC smears were scant in cellularity and contained large cells with abundant basophilic cytoplasm, one to two nuclei lying at the periphery, and prominent nucleoli that resemble ganglion cells.

  • Hsp90 is an ubiquitous molecular chaperone protein, which plays an important role in regulating maturation and stabilization of many oncogenic proteins. Due to its potential to simultaneously disable multiple signaling pathways, Hsp90 represents great promise as a therapeutic target of cancer. In this study, we synthesized flavokawain analogues and evaluated their biological activities against drug-resistant cancer cells. The study indicated that compound 1i impaired the growth of gefitinib-resistant non-small cell lung cancer (H1975), down-regulated the expression of Hsp90 client proteins including EGFR, Her2, Met, Akt and Cdk4, and upregulated the expression of Hsp70. The result strongly suggested that compound 1i inhibited the proliferation of cancer cells through Hsp90 inhibition. Overall, compound 1i could serve as a potential lead compound to overcome the drug resistance in cancer chemotherapy.

  • The peripheral ossifying fibroma(POF) is a relatively common, non-neoplastic gingival growth that is classified as a reactive hyperplastic inflammatory lesion. The clinical appearance of POF is generally a small, well-circumscribed, focal mass with a sessile or pedunculated base. The pathogenesis of this lesion is uncertain. POFs are believed to arise from cells of the periodontal ligament as hyperplastic growth of tissue that is unique to the gingival mucosa. Approximately 60% of POFs occur in the maxilla, and 55%-60% of all cases occur in the incisor-canine area. Most lesions are less than 2 cm in size. To our knowledge, huge POF of approximately 8 cm in size in the lower posterior edentulous ridge has not been previously described in the English literature. We report an unusually huge POF overlying the lower posterior edentulous ridge mucosa, along with long-term follow up result.

  • 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), a prototype of many halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, is a ubiquitous, persistent environmental contaminant and the most powerful carcinogen categorized by IARC. It is display high toxicity in animals and is associated with several cancers in human. Although the mechanism of carcinogenesis by TCDD is unclear, it is considered to be a non-genotoxic and rumor promoter.(omitted)
