The objective of this study is to evaluate micro end-milling characteristics and tool wear behavior of AlN-hBN composites. First, AlN based composites with hBN contents in the range of 10 to 20vol% were prepared by hot-pressing. Vickers hardness and flexural strength of the prepared composite specimens were measured and compared according to the vol% of hBN variations. Then, cutting force variations were measured and analyzed using a tool dynamometer during the micro end-milling experiments; and machined surface shapes and roughness were investigated using a 3D non-contact type surface profiler. After micro end-milling, worn tools were investigated using a tool microscope and SEM images. From the experimental results, it can be observed that the cutting forces decreased, and surface qualities were improved with increasing hBN contents. At low content of hBN, tool chipping was observed; and tool wear rate decreased with increasing hBN contents. The results of this study insist that proper machining conditions, including tool wear behavior investigation, should be determined for the micro end-milling of AlN-hBN composites for its further application.

The high-skewed and/or composite propellers of current interests to reduce the ship vibration and to increase the acoustic performance are likely to be exposed to the unexpected structural problems. One typical example is that the added mass effect on the propellers working in the non-uniform wake field reduces the natural frequency of the propeller leading to the resonance with the low-frequency excitation of the external forces. To avoid this resonance problem during the design stage, the technique of fluid-structure interaction has been developed, but the higher-order effect of the blade geometry deformation is not yet considered in evaluating the added mass effects. In this paper the fluid boundary-value problem is formulated by the potential-based panel method in the inviscid fluid region with the velocity inflow due to the body deformation, and the structural response of the solid body under the hydrodynamic loading is solved by applying the finite element method which implements the 20-node iso-parametric element model. The fluid-structure problem is solved iteratively. A basic fluid-sturcture interaction study is performed with the simple rectangular plates of thin thickness with various planform submerged in the water of infinite extent. The computations show good correlation with the experimental results of Linholm, et al. (1965).
Calculation of elastic wave fields has important applications in a variety of engineering fields including NDE (Non-destructive evaluation). Scattering problems have been investigated by numerous authors with different solution schemes. For simple geometries of the scatterers (e.g., cylinders or spheres), the analysis of steady-state elastic wave scattering has been carried out using analytical techniques. For arbitrary geometries and multiple inclusions, numerical methods have been developed. Special finite element methods, e.g., the infinite element method and a hybrid method called the Global-Local finite element method have also been developed for this purpose. Recently, the boundary integral equation method has been used successfully to solve scattering problems. In this paper, a volume integral equation method (VIEM) is proposed as a new numerical solution scheme for the solution of general elasto-dynamic problems in unbounded solids containing multiple inclusions and voids or cracks. A boundary integral equation method (BIEM) is also presented for elastic wave scattering problems. The relative advantage of the volume and boundary integral equation methods for solving scattering problems is discussed.

Concentrically braced steel frames (CBFs) can be optimised during the seismic design process by using lateral loading distributions derived from the concept of uniform damage distribution. However, it is not known how such structures are affected by uncertainties. This study aims to quantify and manage the effects of structural and ground-motion uncertainty on the seismic performance of optimum and conventionally designed CBFs. Extensive nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed on 5, 10 and 15-storey frames to investigate the effects of storey shear-strength and damping ratio uncertainties by using the Monte Carlo simulation method. For typical uncertainties in conventional steel frames, optimum design frames always exhibit considerably less inter-storey drift and cumulative damage compared to frames designed based on IBC-2012. However, it is noted that optimum structures are in general more sensitive to the random variation of storey shear-strength. It is shown that up to 50% variation in damping ratio does not affect the seismic performance of the optimum design frames compared to their code-based counterparts. Finally, the results indicate that the ground-motion uncertainty can be efficiently managed by optimizing CBFs based on the average of a set of synthetic earthquakes representing a design spectrum. Compared to code-based design structures, CBFs designed with the proposed average patterns exhibit up to 54% less maximum inter-storey drift and 73% less cumulative damage under design earthquakes. It is concluded that the optimisation procedure presented is reliable and should improve the seismic performance of CBFs.
Frequently, steel silos are supported by discrete supports or columns to permit easy access beneath the barrel. In such cases, large loads are transferred to the limited number of supports, causing locally high axial compressive stress concentrations in the shell wall above the supports. If not dealt with properly, these increased stresses will lead to premature failure of the silo due to local instability in the regions above the supports. Local stiffening near the supports is a way to improve the buckling resistance, as material is added in the region of elevated stresses, levelling these out to values found in uniformly supported silos. The aim of a study on the properties of local stiffening will then be to increase the failure load, governed by an interaction of plastic collapse and elastic instability, to that of a discrete supported silo. However, during the course of such a study it was found that, although the failure remains local, the cylinder height is also a parameter that influences the failure mechanism, a fact that is not properly taken into account in current design practice and codes. This paper describes the mechanism behind the effect of the cylinder height on the failure load, which is related to pre-buckling deformations of the shell structure. All results and conclusions are based on geometrically and materially non-linear finite element analyses.

In this work, the epoxy specimens were prepared from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF) with silane coupling agents (3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS)) in different ratios. Thermal stability was studied in terms of polymer decomposition temperature (PDT), temperature of maximum rate of weight loss ($T_{max}$), integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), and decomposition activation energy ($E_a$) using TGA analysis. Adhesion properties of epoxy composite specimens were measured by UTM (universal testing machine) at atmosphere temperature. In this result, the adhesion properties of DGEBF were improved by addition of silane coupling agents compared to non-treated epoxy resin. However, when the content of GPTMS agent is more than 10 phr, adhesion properties decreased with increasing GPTMS agent.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified with Pd and $TiO_2$ composite catalysts were synthesized by the sol-gel method followed by solvothermal treatment at low temperature. The chemical composition and surface structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Photocatalytic recycle degradation experiments were carried out under both UV and visible light irradiation in the presence of MWCNT/$TiO_2$ and Pd-MWCNT/$TiO_2$ composites. As expected, the nanosized Pd-MWCNT/$TiO_2$ photocatalysts had enhanced activity over the non Pd treated MWCNT/$TiO_2$ material in the degradation of a rhodamine B (Rh.B) solution. An increase in photocatalytic activity was observed and attributed to an increase in the photo-absorption effect by MWCNTs and the cooperative effect of Pd and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. According to the recycled results, the as-prepared Pd-MWCNT/$TiO_2$ sample had a good effect on it.

Effects of inorganic nano-powders on the polymerization and thermal degradation kinetics as well as the mechanical properties of polyurethane nano-composites were studied by both the measurement of polymerization temperature as a function of time and non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as well as the Instron test. As the results from polymerization studies, the reaction rates of MMT-filled PU composites were faster than those of Ce500-filled ones, and moreover, the activation energies using Kissinger method for the thermal degradation of composites were calculated as 139.34 kJ/mol for the Ce500-filled PU composites and 91.12 kJ/mol for MMT-filled one, respectivel, exhibiting that MMT nano-powder seemed to be acting as the catalyst for both polymerization and degradation of PU composites. UTM result, however, showed that tensile strength at break of MMT-filled composites was much higher than that of Ce500-filled ones above the concentrations range of 5 phr in the composites.
This study has tried to develop the modified DRASTIC Model by supplying the parameters, such as structural lineament density and landuse, into conventional DRASTIC model, and to predict the potential of groundwater contamination using GIS in Whanam 2 Area, Gyeonggi Province, Korea. Since the aquifers in Korea is generally through the joints of rock-mass in hydrogeological environment, lineament density affects to the behavior of groundwater and contaminated plumes directly, and land-use reflect the effect of point or non-point source of contamination indirectly. For the statistical analysis, lattice layers of each parameter were generated, and then level of confidence was assessed by analyzing each correlation coefficient. Composite contamination map was achieved as a final result by comparing modified DRASTIC potential and the amount of generation load of several contaminant sources logically. The result could suggest the predictability of the area of contamination potential on the respects of hydrogeological aspect and water quality.
The rhizome extract of Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi(Compositae) exhibited a particular inhibition on the proliferation of cultured human tumor cell lines, in vitro. Thus, the intensive phytichemical investigation of the MeOH extract of Atractylodes japonica have been conducted by the way of activity-guided purification. The repeated column chromatographic separation of the n-hexane soluble part of extract resulted in the isolation of four sesquiterpenes (1-4) and a polyacetylene component (5). Chemical structures of them were identified as atractylon (1), atractylenolide Ⅰ(2), atractylenolide Ⅲ(3), eudesma-4(15),7(11)-dien-8-one (4) and 1,3-diacetyl-atractylodiol (5) by spectroscopic means. Among the isolates, compound 2-4 were shown to give moderate inhibitory effect in a dose dependent manner on the proliferation of cultured human tumor cell lines such as A549 (non small cell lung), SK-OV-3 (ovary), SK-MEL-2 (melanoma), XF498 (central nerve system) and HCT 15(colon), respectively.
