  • The density of soil is one of the most important of its engineering properties, and many soil-engineering operations directed toward improving the density characteristics of matecal. This report is a study on relationship between density, permiabilty and other physical properties of compacted soil in various desity grades. The results of the study can be summariged as follow: 1. The optimum moisture content of soil increses with increasing of fine particles and a relationship between both parameter is $w_0=0.1765.n$ Where, n is passing percentage from #200 sieve. 2. The porosity of soil increases with increasing of optimum water content as $e=aw_0+b$ without having relation to compaction ratio. 3. The increment of permeability of soil is high when the compaction ratio is increased and the phenomenon is conspicuous in case of course soil and non-plastic soil. 4. The permeability of soil decreases with increasing of optrimum water content and the phenomenon is conspicuous when compaction ratio decreases. And the permeability is almost constant when optimum water content is more than 25 percent, even though compaction ratio changes. 5. The permeablity of soil increanses when the amount of fine particles is very few, the permeability is almost constant as being impervious condition without having relation to compaction ratio when there in more than 90 percent of fine particles(less than #200 sieve).

  • In this study, the dynamic compaction method was selected by analyzing field situation, soil condition data and compaction test characteristics of the special selected soils, and the compaction method for using the selected soils as the site restoration soil of the ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ city non-sanitary landfill maintenance project. The N value in the standard penetration test (SPT) before and after dynamic compaction increased by an average of 89% over the range 12~18, and the allowable bearing capacity of the plate bearing test (PBT) was ranged $150{\sim}227kN/m^2$, at least 80% higher than that before test. As a result, it can be seen that the same tendency as the dynamic compaction effect applied to the existing dredging and waste landfill is shown.

  • In a banking process for construction of a complex, non-compaction construction has been applied in most sites, which is a method that soils are compacted by the equipment load without being compacted separately. However, there are no specific descriptions in the construction manual or specifications, so it is unclear to evaluate the excavation volume. Hence, this study is a basic study to compare the soil conversion factor at a design stage and the actual soil conversion factor of a banking ground under a non-compaction condition in order to examine the feasibility in constructing the ground for construction of the complex and to examine appropriateness of the earth work in the site by conducting an indoor, field, and load-settlement test and proposing a reasonable soil conversion factor. Under the non-compaction condition, the soil conversion factor C is set to be 1.0 at the design stage, but the result of the field test was 0.86 which is smaller than the value at the design stage. It was expected that this result would increase the banking volume, and the construction result actually showed a difference in the banking volume. Therefore, for the baking ground under the non-compaction condition, it is necessary to apply the value C suitable for the site condition after performing test by considering the site's condition and the banking height.

  • The Western south Sea of Korea can be divided into 4 acoustic facies (AF I-AF IV) according to the variations of acoustic characters. Typical acoustic characters revealed in high-resolution seismic profiles (3.5kHz) are prolonged, internal reflected, non-penetrated, and transparent types. These acoustic types probably controlled by bottom condition and sediment properties such as composition and compaction of sediments. Acoustic facies I is characterized by prolonged type which is produced by absorbing of acoustic signals on the coarse sediments including gravels and shell fragments and irregular bedforms. Acoustic facies II is characterized by internal reflected type which is probably produced by differential sediments compaction. Acoustic facies III is characterized by non-penetrated type caused by scattering of acoustic signals on the well sorted fine ad very fine sand sediments. Acoustic facies IV is characterized by transparent type with non-internal reflector in limited thickness. Acoustic types in high-resolution profiles provide important information not only about the stratigraphy of sub bottom but also abut the sedimentary processes in shallow sea.

  • For modeling the non-periodic and randomly scattered powder particles, the quasi-random multi-particle array is introduced. The multi-scale process simulation, which enables to formulate a regression model with a response surface method, is performed by employing a homogenization method. The size of ${Al_2}{O_3}$ particle, amplitude of cyclic compaction pressure, and friction coefficient are considered as optimal process parameters. The optimal conditions of process parameters providing the highest relative density are finally found by using the grid search method.

  • Sintered bulks of $ZrO_2$ nanopowders were fabricated by magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and subsequent two-step sintering employed in this study and the formability effects of nanopowder on mixing condition, pressure and sintering temperature were investigated. The addition of PVA induced and increase in the formability of the sintered bulk. But cracked bulks were obtained on sintering with addition of over 10 wt% PVA due to generation of crack during sintering. The optimum compaction pressure during MPC was 1.0 GPa and mixing conditions included using 5.0 wt% PVA. The optimum processing condition included MPC process, followed by two-step sintering (first at 1000 and then at $1450^{\circ}C$). The sintered bulks with the diameter of 30 mm under these conditions were found to have non crack, ~99% density.

  • The compaction and sintering behavior of zirconium titanate $(ZrTiO_4)$ was investigated by means of the measurement of sintering density and shrinkage, and the observation of microstructure. With increasing the content of $Al_2O_3$ additive, $Al_2O_3$-modified zirconium titanate samples fired at $1300^{\circ}C$ showed the anisotropic shrinkage behavior that the upper region of sintered body has higher sintering shrinkage than the low region. This difference of sintering shrinkage decreased with increasing firing temperature from 1300 to $1400^{\circ}C$. The SEM micrographs of powder compation show that the anisotropic shrinkage behavior is related with non-uniform density in a uniaxial compaction.

  • Aggregate is cheaper than cement and confers considerable technical advantages on concrete, which has a higher volume stability and better durability than hydrated cement paste alone. and coarse aggregate is the largest particle size out of concrete and is much affect on the fruidity, compaction and non-segregation ability of high flowing concrete. As the compaction, fillingability and shrinkage of high flowing concrete, the volume ratio of coarse aggregate is prescribed by Japanese Architectural Standard Specificateon (JASS 5) : from 0.500 to 0.500㎥/㎥. It is the aim of this study to compare and analysis the fruidity, fillingability and non-segregation of high flosing concrete according to the volume ratio of coarse aggregate of concrete(G/Glim).

  • The effectiveness of the treatment of intracranial aneurysms with endovascular coiling depends on coil packing density, the location of aneurysm, its neck dimensions with respect to the aneurysm dome, and its size with respect to the surrounding tissue. Clinical data also suggests that the aneurysm neck size is the main predictor of aneurysm recanalization. In this study, the force impinging on the aneurysm neck in an idealized aneurysm was calculated by using a three dimensional finite volume method for the non-Newtonian incompressible laminar flow. To quantify the effect of neck size on the impingement force, calculations were performed for aneurysm neck diameters (Da) varying from 10% to 100% of the parent artery diameter (Dp). Also, maximum impingement forces were represented by a function of the ratio of the aneurysm neck to the diameter of the parent vessel. The results show that the hemodynamic forces exerted on the coil mass at the aneurysm neck due to the pulsatile blood flow are larger for wide necked aneurysms.

  • Seashore landfill projects use undersea pump dredging method for construction of airport and factory site. Coarse grain soil from the dredging is considered for use at inland. West sea shore bottom consists of primarily coarser grained silt-sand and this component contains far more percentage than is the case with East sea and South sea area. This soil shows very different characteristic at consolidation and compaction behavior. This research targets to utilize this type of dredging soil. Test specimen is from West sea (Saemangum) dredged soil landfill site. Model analysis is done for getting prediction of original soil relative density and N-value from dynamic compaction energy variance. Dynamic compaction energy is calculated for efficient foundation design.
