  • This paper is concerned with the long-term performance of geo-textile (GT) composites in terms of creep deformation and frictional properties. Composites of PVA GT and HDPE GM were made to investigate the advanced properties of long-term performance related to waste landfill applications. The same experiments were also performed for typical polypropylene and polyester GT and compared to PVA GT/HDPE GM composites. We also develop high performance GT composites with GM by using PVA GT, which is capable of improving the frictional properties and thus enhances long-term performance of GT composites. Experimental study reveals that the friction coefficient of GT composites is relatively large compared with those of polyester and polypropylene non-woven GT as long as the friction media has similar size to the particles of domestic standard earth. In addition, the geo-composites bonded with geo-grid by a chemical process were investigated experimentally in terms of strain evaluation and creep response values. Geo-grid plays an important role as a reinforcing material. Three kinds of geo-grid were prepared as strong yarn polyester and they were woven type, non-woven type, and wrap knitted type. The sample geo-grids were then coated with PVC. The rib tensile strength tests were conducted to evaluate geo-grid products in terms of tensile strength with regard to single rib. The test was performed according to GRI-GGI. It was concluded again from the experiments that the tensile and creep strains of the geo-grid showed such stable values that the geo-grid prepared in this study could protect geo-textile partially in practical structures.

  • Much research on semantic geographic information systems that incorporating the Semantic Web and geographic information has been actively studied. However, the existing geographic information systems have a system dependency problem that users can input and retrieve non-spatial information only in a specific system. It also causes difficulty in providing rich services. Therefore, this paper proposes an implementation model for population of Geo-ontology from non-structured Web resources. The proposed model can populate instances for Web ontology independently of systems, and thus it enables a richer Web service development. Finally, this paper shows the prototype that populates instances including a Geo-ontology building example for a University selected as an application domain.

  • This research focuses on accomplishing analysis problems and issues by examining the policies and systems related to geo-spatial big data which have recently arisen, and suggests political and systemic improvement plan for service activation. To do this, problems and probable issues concerning geo-spatial big data service activation should be analyzed through the examination of precedent studies, policies and planning, pilot projects, the current legislative situation regarding geo-spatial big data, both domestic and abroad. Therefore, eight political and systematical improvement plan proposals are suggested for geo-spatial big data service activation: legislative-related issues regarding geo-spatial big data, establishing an exclusive organization in charge of geospatial big data, setting up systems for cooperative governance, establishing subsequent systems, preparing non-identifying standards for personal information, providing measures for activating civil information, data standardization on geo-spatial big data analysis, developing analysis techniques for geo-spatial big data, etc. Consistent governmental problem-solving approaches should be required to make these suggestions effectively proceed.

  • Two fundamental issues exist in the damage theory of geo-material based on the concept of thermodynamics: existence or nonexistence of the dissipation potential, and whether the dissipation potential could be decoupled into a damage potential and a plastic one or not. Thermodynamics theory of elastoplastic damage assumes the existence of dissipation potential, but the presence of dissipation potential is conditional. Based on the dissipation inequality in accord with the second law of thermodynamics, the sufficient and necessary conditions are given for the existence of the dissipation potential separately in total and incremental forms firstly, and proved strictly in theory. With taking advantage of the basic mechanical properties of geo-materials, the nonexistence of the dissipative potential is verified. The sufficient and necessary conditions are also given and proved for the decoupling of the dissipation potential of geo-materials in total and incremental forms. Similarly, the non-decoupling of the dissipation potential has also been proved, which indicates the dissipation potential of geo-materials in total or incremental forms could not be decoupled into a dissipative potential for plasticity and that for damage respectively. The research results for the fundamental issues in the thermodynamics theory of damage will help establish and improve the theoretic basis of elastoplastic damage constitutive model for geo-materials.

  • The homogeneity of the compacted ground was analyzed using drone-based remote terrain and gravity field data. Among the topographic elements calculated by the hydrological algorithm, the topographic curvature effectively showed the shape of the surface that occurred during the compaction process, and the non-uniformly compacted area could be identified. The appropriate resolution of the digital topography requires a precision of about 10 cm. Gravity field Interpretation was performed to analyze the spatial density change of the compacted ground. In the distribution of residual bouguer gravity anomaly, the non-homogeneously compacted area showed a different magnitude of gravity than the surrounding area, and the difference in compaction was identified through gravity-density modeling. From the results, it is expected that the topographic element and gravitational field analysis method can be used to evaluate the homogeneity of the compacted ground.

  • Nitrogen budgets in Sihwa-ho in 2010 were estimated using a mass balance approach. Major nitrogen fluxes sources can be divided into three sections: cities, agricultural area, and forest. Surplus nitrogen 2,030~2,214 ton/yr (2,123 ton/yr in average) was discharged to Sihwa Lake. 20% of the surplus nitrogen is removed from the wetland and 60% is removed tidal flats. Therefore net nitrogen discharge from Sihwa basin is estimated to be 650~708 ton/yr (679 ton/yr in average). Wet and dry nitrogen deposition and load from non-point sources ware estimated to be 97 ton/yr and 69 ton/yr, deposition is using CAMx model. So estimated total nitrogen discharge into Sihwa-ho was 817~875 ton/yr (846 ton/yr in average). The atmospheric load explains 11.1~11.9% (11.5% in average) of the total nitrogen load Sihwa-ho.

  • Geo-based application services linked with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Processing Service (WPS) protocol have been regarded as an important standardized framework for of digital earth building in the web environments. The WPS protocol provides interface standards for analysis functionalities within geo-spatial processing in web-based service systems. Despite its significance, there is few performance tests of WPS applications. The main motivation in this study is to perform the comparative performance test on WPS standards. Test system, which was composed of WPS servers, WPS framework, data management module, geo-based data processing module and client-sided system, was implemented by fully open source stack. In this system, two kinds of geo-based image processing functions such as cloud detection and gradient magnitude computation were applied. The performance test of different server environments of non-WPS, synchronous WPS 1.0 and asynchronous WPS 2.0 was carried out using 100 threads and 400 threads corresponds client users on a web-based application service. As the result, at 100 threads, performance of three environments was within an adjacent range in the average response time to complete the processing of each thread. At 400 threads, the application case of WPS 2.0 showed the distinguished characteristics for higher performance in the response time than the small threads cases. It is thought that WPS 2.0 contributes to settlement of without performance problems such as time delay or thread accumulation.

  • Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) has kept the largest amount of gene-expression microarray data that have grown exponentially. Microarray data in GEO have been generated in many different formats and often lack standardized annotation and documentation. It is hard to know if preprocessing has been applied to a dataset or not and in what way. Standard-based integration of heterogeneous data formats and metadata is necessary for comprehensive data query, analysis and mining. We attempted to integrate the heterogeneous microarray data in GEO based on Minimum Information About a Microarray Experiment (MIAME) standard. We unified the data fields of GEO Data table and mapped the attributes of GEO metadata into MIAME elements. We also discriminated non-preprocessed raw datasets from others and processed ones by using a two-step classification method. Most of the procedures were developed as semi-automated algorithms with some degree of text mining techniques. We localized 2,967 Platforms, 4,867 Series and 103,590 Samples with covering 279 organisms, integrated them into a standard-based relational schema and developed a comprehensive query interface to extract. Our tool, GEOQuest is available at http://www.snubi.org/software/GEOQuest/.

  • Gaussian process regression (GPR) is proposed as a tool of long-term groundwater quality predictions. The major advantage of GPR is that both prediction and the prediction related uncertainty are provided simultaneously. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed tool, GPR and a conventional non-parametric trend analysis tool are comparatively applied to synthetic examples. From the application, it has been found that GPR shows better performance compared to the conventional method, especially when the groundwater quality data shows typical non-linear trend. The GPR model is further employed to the long-term groundwater quality predictions based on the data from two domestically operated groundwater monitoring stations. From the applications, it has been shown that the model can make reasonable predictions for the majority of the linear trend cases with a few exceptions of severely non-Gaussian data. Furthermore, for the data shows non-linear trend, GPR with mean of second order equation is successfully applied.
