Korean red ginseng (RG), which is a ginseng treated by heating and steaming, has biological activity similar to Panax ginseng. The effect of ginseng on influenza infection has not been studied although it is known to have a broad range of biological activities. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of RG extract on influenza A (H1N1) virus infection. We investigated the inhibitory effect of RG extract on plaque formation by influenza A virus in a cell-based plaque assay, and the effect of orally administered RG on influenza A virus infection in mice. RG extract, which was applied at a non-cytotoxic concentration, inhibited plaque formation by influenza A virus in the cell-based plaque assay. The orally administered RG extract ameliorated body weight loss and significantly increased survival in mice infected with influenza A virus. Our results suggest that RG extract has components that reduce the severity of infection by influenza A virus and could potentially be used as a complement to treatment of influenza A virus infections.
One of the bone substitutes now in routine use, deproteinized bovine bone mineral(DBBM), is regarded as resorbable and osteoconductive, but some studies refute this. The present study was performed to evaluate the effects of DBBM on guided bone regeneration using titanium membrane on the calvaria of rabbit. At 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks after surgery, the animal was scrificed. Non-decalcified specimens were produced for histologic analysis. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Titanium membrane was biocompatible and capable of space-maintaining, but there was ingrowth of soft tissue through the pore of titanium membrane. 2. There was no resorption or reduction of DBBM with time. 3. Some of the DBBM particles were combined with newly formed bone. But, apart from host bone, a great part of the particles were surrounded by connective tissue. 4. The bone formation was slight vertically and restricted to superficial area of host bone. Whithin the above results, DBBM dose not appear to contribute to bone formation. DBBM may disturb the migration and proliferation of mesenchymal cell derived from host bone and increase the growth of connective tissue. Therefore, careful caution is needed on selection of bone graft material and surgical protocol at guided bone regeneration for implant placement.
The effect of oscillating on the unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. Our study is to analyze the vortex formation behind a circular cylinder for different rotary oscillation conditions. And then we are study to portray the unsteady dynamics of wake flows. We decide lock-on region by observing the phase switching phenomena We classify the vortex formation patterns in the primary lock-on region The present study is to identify the quasi-periodic state around lock-on region. At the boundary between lock-on and non-lock-on the shedding frequency is bifurcated. After the bifurcation, one frequency follow the forcing frequency ($S_f$) and the other returns to the natural shedding frequency ($St_0$). In the quasi-periodic state, the variation of magnitudes and relevant phase changes of $C_L$ with forcing phase are examined.
Shear wave velocities of three selected sandy soils subject to drained triaxial compression test were continuously measured using the bender elements. The shear wave velocity during isotropic compression, as widely recognized, increased as confining pressure increased and they were correlated well. However, during drained shearing, the mean effective stress could no further provide a suitable correlation. The shear wave velocity during this stage was almost constant with respect to the mean effective stress. The vertical stress was found to be more favorable at this stage (since confining stress was kept constant). When sample was attained its peak stress, the shear wave velocity reduced and deviated from the previously existed trend line. This was probably caused by the non-uniformity induced by the formation of shear band. Subsequently, void ratios computed based on external measurements could not provide reasonable fitting to the initial stage of post-peak shear wave velocity. At very large strain levels after shear band formation, the digital images revealed that sample may internally re-arrange itself to be in a more uniform loose stage. This final stage void ratio estimated based on the proposed correlation derived during pre-peak state was close to the value of the maximum void ratio.

In order to obtain mono-dispersed Fe NPs with high saturation magnetization, quantitative analysis method to investigate the growth dynamics of the Fe NPs synthesized by a conventional thermal decomposition method has been developed. As a result, fast nucleation process promotes formation of ~4 nm of initial nucleus with a non-equilibrium phase, resulting in low saturation magnetization. And slow particle growth with atomic-scaled surface precipitation mode (< 100 atoms/($min{\cdot}nm^2$)) can form the growth layer on the surface of initial nucleus with high saturation magnetization (~190 emu/$g_{Fe}$) as an equilibrium a phase of Fe. Therefore, higher stabilization of small initial nucleus generated just after the injection of $Fe(CO)_5$ should be one of the key issues to achieve much higher $M_s$ of Fe NPs.
In this study, the BaTiO$\sub$3/ capacitor add to MnO$\sub$2/ like depressor and shifter were investigated for temperature or voltage compensation by structural and electrical analysis. The relative density of BCTM, generating poly crystall and formation of lattice defect, has a 90[%] over as the CaTiO$\sub$3/ come out to control grain size. The current density of BCTM2 increased non-ohmic in high-electric field but that BCTM3 and BCTM4 had a few changing. The BCTM3 and BCTM4 unformated grain boundary shown temperature compensation properties, so that the dielectric constant was low value. The curie point was near 140[.deg. C] in BCTM1 and BCTM4, but BCTM3 and BCTM4 not shown the curie point. It is found that the charging energy of BCTM4 was changed 6[%] according to rising temperature from room temperature to 417[K]. The formation of BaMnO$\sub$3/ was low dielectric constant to change frequency and temperature.
This study was conducted to examine the vitality of Bletilla striata Rchb.f. seed treated with different concentrations sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for different lengths of time. This study also examined the effect of NaOCl treatment times and concentrations on swelling formation and seed germination of B. striata seed. The non-treated B. striata seed had the highest survival rate (82.7%) Treatment with more than 1.5% NaOCl negatively affected the seed survival rate, as compared to concentrations of less than 1%. The swelling formation and seed germination percentages were highest (90.1% and 94.1%, respectively) when seeds were treated with 0.5% NaOCl for 20 min. These results can be used as important basic data for the growth and restoration of B. striata and further suggest the possibility of individual restoration in habitats.
Stainless steel is being used widely for various purposes due to its good corrosion resistance. There has been much research to produce colored stainless steel by several methods such as anodizing and ion plating. In this experiment, we coated TiN(C,O,H)films SUS304 substraate with the DC magnetron spttering system made by Leybold Heraeus and studied the interlater structure and abhesive strength of the films as a function of additional gases, acetylene, hydrogen and oxygen. When the acetylene gas was added into the chamber, the specimen with the interlayer phase had good adhesion due to the toughness of the $\gamma'-Fe_4N$ plase induced from a solid solution of carbon atoms, while low adhesion appeared on the specimen of the non interlayer phase. The formation of the interlayer phase($\gamma'-Fe_4N$) was due to hydrogen embrittlement and internal stress induced by $\gamma'-Fe_4N$ formation in the interlayer. We could fine the interlayer phase ($\gamma'-Fe_4N$) at the interface between the film and the substrate of the TEM image when $\gamma'-Fe_4N$ was detected by the X-ray duffraction metheod.
The phoisomerization process of symmetric carbocyanine dyes such as 3,3'-diethyloxadicarbocyanine iodide (DODCI), 3,3'-diethylthiadicarbocyanine iodide (DfDCI), 1,1'-diethyl-2,2'-dicarbocyanine iodide (DDI), 1,1'-diethyl-2,2'-carbocyanine iodide (DCI), and cryptocyanine (1,1'-diethyl-4,4'-carbocyanine) iodide (CCI) have been studied by measuring the steady state and time resolved fluorescence spectra and the ground-state recovery profiles. The steady-state fluorescence spectrum of photoisomer as a function of concentration and excitation wavelength provides the evidence that the fluorescence of photoisomer is formed by the radiative energy transfer from the normal form and the quantum yield for the formation of photoisomer is increased by decreasing the excitation wavelength. The fluorescence decay profiles have been measured by using the time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) technique, showing a strong dependence on the concentration and the detection wavelength, which is due to the formation of excited photoisomers produced either by the radiative energy transfer from the non-nal form or by absorbing the 590 nm laser pulse. We first report the fluorescence decay time of photoisomers for these cyanine dyes. The experimental results are explained by introducing the semiempirical calculations. The ground state recovery profiles of DTDCI, DDI, and CCI normal forms have been measured, showing that the recovery time from the singlet excited state is similar with the fluorescence decay time.
