Dual-channel nano-electrospray has recently become an ionization technique of great promise especially in biological mass spectrometry. This unique approach takes advantage of the mixing processes that occurs during electrospray. Understanding in more detail the fundamental principles influencing spray formation further study of the origins of the mixing processes: (1) in a Taylor cone region, (2) in charged droplets or (3) in both environments. The dual-channel emitters were made from borosilicate theta-shape glass tubes (O.D. 1.2 mm) and had a tip diameters of less than 4 μm. Electrical contact was achived by deposition of a thin film of an appropriate metal onto the surface of the emitter. The experimental investigation of the Taylor cone formation in a dual-channel electrospray emitter has been carried out by injection of polystyrene beads (diameter 3 μm) at very low concentrations into one of the channels of the non-tapered theta-glass tubes. High-speed camera experiments were set up to visualize the mixing processes in Taylor cone regions for dual-channel emitters. Mass spectra from dual nano-electrospray are presented.

The concentrations of organic and elemental carbon were determined using fine particle samples collected from Kosan, Cheju Island during the summer seasons of 1994 and 1995. The daily mean concentrations of organic and elemental carbon for each measurement period were 3.74 and 0.27 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ in 1994, while those of 1995 were 2.36 and 0.10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively The concentrations of organic carbon were higher than those commonly observed from clean areas around the world, but those of elemental carbon were lower than, or comparable to, other clean areas in the world. The resulting ratios of total carbon to elemental carbon at this site were thus higher than those seen from other metropolitan and non-polluted regions abroad. In addition according to our analysis, the 1994 measurement period can be classified into two periods: enhanced (July 20 and August 1) and reduced levels (August 2 and 9) of the carbonaceous species. The observed difference between two periods may be in part accounted for by the air trajectories representing each period. During the former period, the air masses from the Asian continent and Japan were dominant, while the air masses from the North Pacific Ocean came during the latter period. OC/EC ratios at the site were calculated to predict the possible formation of secondary organic aerosol . Based on our observations, we suggest that the formation of secondary organic aerosol might be an important pathway to the production of organic carbons.
A variety of titanium (Ti) and its alloys are used in the clinical procedures of bone regeneration for periodontal and dental implant therapies. This study was performed to determine the effect of different surface dental implant materials on biologic responses of a MG-63 human osteoblast-like cell line. MG-63 cells were cultured on Ti coated with hydroxyapatite (HA), calcium metaphosphate (CMP), anodized (A), which compared with non-coated Ti (control). The appearances of surface of dental implant materials and the morphology of these cells were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The gene expression profiles of MG-63 cells cultured on Ti were examined by human cDNA microarray (1,152 elements). The expression of several genes was up- and down-regulated by different surfaces of dental implant materials. Interesting, the genes correlated with cellular adhesion and extra cellular matrix (ECM) formation were enhanced, in accordance surface morphology of the dental implant materials used.
Purpose: Early diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infection have been emphasized to prevent renal scarring. If untreated, acute pyelonephritis could cause renal injury, which leads to renal scarring, hypertension, proteinuria, and chronic renal failure. The purpose of this study was to assess risk factors of renal scarring after treatment of acute pyelonephritis (APN). Methods: The medical records of 59 patients admitted at Daegu Fatima Hospital because of APN between March 2008 and April 2015 whose renal cortical defects were confirmed by using initial technetium-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scans were reviewed retrospectively. We divided 59 patients into 2 groups according to the presence of renal scar and assessed risk factors of renal scar, including sex, age at diagnosis, feeding method, hydronephrosis, bacterial species, vesicoureteral reflux, and vesicoureteral reflux grade. Results: Of 59 patients (41%), 24 showed renal scar on follow-up DMSA scan. No significant differences in sex, hydronephrosis, bacterial species, and fever duration were found between the renal-scarred and non-scarred groups. As for age at diagnosis, age of >12 months had 5.8 times higher incidence rate of renal scarring. Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) affected renal scar formation. VUR grade III or IV had 14.7 times greater influence on renal scar formation than VUR grade I or II. Conclusion: Our data suggest that the presence of VUR and its grade and age at diagnosis are risk factors of renal scar on follow-up DMSA scan after APN.
Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the effects of Gardenia jasminoides extract (GJ) on osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption in vitro. Methods: To investigate the effect of GJ on osteoclast differentiation, the mouse leukemic myeloid cell line RAW 264.7 was stimulated by RANKL (receptor activator of nuclear factor kB ligand). Osteoclast differentiation was measured by counting TRAP (+) MNC in the presence of RANKL. To elucidate the mechanism of the inhibitory effect of GJ on osteoclast differentiation, gene expression of TRAP, Cathepsin K, MMP-9, NFATc1, c-Fos, MITF, DC-STAMP, CTR, OC-STAMP and Atp6v0d2 was measured using reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR). Bone resorption was measured using the bone pit formation assay. Results: GJ decreased the number of TRAP (+) MNCs in the presence of RANKL. GJ inhibited the expression of cathepsin K, MMP-9, TRAP, MITF, NFATc1, c-Fos, iNON, OC-STAMP, Atp6v0d2, and DC-STAMP in the osteoclast, and inhibited bone pit formation in vitro. Conclusions: The results suggest that GJ has inhibitory effects on bone resorption resulting from inhibition of osteoclast differentiation and gene expression.

In this paper, the flame-retardant wall paper was successfully prepared with recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) short cut fiber with flame-retardant property and wood pulp using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as binder followed by treatment of non-halogen flame retardant. Physical properties such as formation index, tensile strength, elongation, and burst strength increased as defibrillation increased except tear strength. Bulk increased but formation index, tensile strength, elongation and burst strength decreased along with addition of PET short cut fiber. It was also found that tear strength rose significantly up to 30% of PET short cut fiber and then declined (fell) rapidly. As addition level of PVA increased tensile strength, elongation and burst strength increased, but tear strength decreased slightly. Addition of 20% of PET short cut fiber and 13% of PVA provided the flame-retardant wall paper with both improved flameproofing and physical properties.
In order to enhance combustion efficiency, oxygen-enriched combustion is used by increasing the oxygen ratio in the oxidizer. However, since the flame temperature increases, NOx formation in the furnace seriously increases for low oxygen enrichment ratio. In this case, reburning is a useful technology for reducing nitric oxide. In this research, experimental studies have been conducted to evaluate the hybrid effects of reburning/selective non-catalytic reaction (SNCR) and reburning/air staging on NOx formation and also to examine heat transfer characteristics in various oxygen-enriched LPG flames. Experiments were performed in flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which were mounted at the bottom of the furnace. Tests were conducted using LPG gas as main fuel and also as reburn fuel. The paper reported data on flue gas emissions, temperature distribution in furnace and various heat fluxes at the wall for a wide range of experimental conditions. Overall temperature in the furnace, heat fluxes to the wall and NOx generation were observed to increase by low level oxygen-enriched combustion, but due to its hybrid effects of reburning, SNCR and Air staging, NOx concentration in the exhaust have decreased considerably.
The evaporation characteristics of single and multicomponent droplets hanging at the tip of a quartz fiber are studied experimentally at the different environmental conditions under normal gravity. Heptane and Hexadecane are selected as two fuels with different evaporation rates and boiling temperatures. At the first step, the evaporation of single component droplet of both fuels has been examined separately. At the next step the evaporation of several blends of these two fuels, as a binary component droplet, has been studied. The temperature and pressure range is selected between 400 and 700 $^{\circ}C$, and 0.1 and 2.5 MPa, respectively. High temperature environment has been provided by a falling electrical furnace. The initial diameter of droplet was in range of 1.1 and 1.3 mm. The evaporation process was recorded by a high speed CCD camera. The results of binary droplet evaporation show the three staged evaporation. In the the first stage the more volatile component evaporates. The droplet temperature rises after an almost non evaporating period and in the third stage a quasi linear evaporation takes place. The evaporation of the binary droplet at low pressure is accompanied with bubble formation and droplet fragmentation and leads to incomplete microexplosion. The component concentration affects the evaporation behavior of the first two stages. The bubble formation and droplet distortion does not appear at high environment pressure. Nomenclature

The design and synthesis of protein-like polymers is a fundamental challenge in materials science. A biomimetic approach is to explore the impact of monomer sequence on non-natural polymer structure and function. We present the aqueous self-assembly of two peptoid polymers into extremely thin two-dimensional (2D) crystalline sheets directed by periodic amphiphilicity, electrostatic recognition and aromatic interactions. Peptoids are sequence-specific, oligo-N-substituted glycine polymers designed to mimic the structure and functionality of proteins. Mixing a 1:1 ratio of two oppositely charged peptoid 36 mers of a specific sequence in aqueous solution results in the formation of giant, free-floating sheets with only 2.7 nm thickness. Direct visualization of aligned individual peptoid chains in the sheet structure was achieved using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. Specific binding of a protein to ligand-functionalized sheets was also demonstrated. The synthetic flexibility and biocompatibility of peptoids provide a flexible and robust platform for integrating functionality into defined 2D nanostructures. In the later part of my talk, we describe the use of metal ions to construct two-dimensional hybrid films that have the ability to self-heal. Incubation of biomimetic peptoid polymers with specific divalent metal ions results in the spontaneous formation of uniform multilayers at the air-water interface. We anticipate that ease of synthesis and transfer of these two-dimensional materials may have many potential applications in catalysis, gas storage and sensing, optics, nanomaterial synthesis, and environmentally responsive scaffolds.
