  • A common core network is the one of main architectural principles in 3GPP 5G System which has common interfaces with different multiple accesses. 3GPP 5G System Phase 1 (Release 15) supports Untrusted Non-3GPP access as well as 3GPP access with common interfaces. Non-3GPP Interworking Function (N3IWF) has been defined to interface with a UE and a core network for supporting Untrusted Non-3GPP access in 3GPP Release 15. However, interworking with Trusted Non-3GPP access is under study to be completed in 3GPP 5G System Phase 2 (Release 16). Therefore, this paper proposes a Trusted Non-3GPP access network architecture and related signaling procedures, and then the implementation based on the proposal shows how to interwork between Trusted Non-3GPP access and the 5G core network. In our proposal, N3IWF can interwork with either Untrusted or Trusted Non-3GPP access without any architectural modification or addition of 3GPP 5G system Phase 1.

  • 사람의 개입 없이 언제 어디서나 다양한 서비스를 제공하는 MTC(Machine Type Communication)는 다수의 ME(Mobile Equipment)들과의 인증 시그널에 의해 상당한 부하 문제를 야기한다.

  • In this paper, we analyze the possibility of deregistration attack in 5G SNPN (Standalone Non-Public Network) based on 3GPP standard document. In the deregistraion attack, the attacker pretends to be a UE that is normally registered with AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function) and attempts to establish a spoofed RRC (Radio Resource Control) connection, causing AMF to deregister the existing UE. The existing deregistration attack attempts a spoofed RRC connection to the AMF in which the UE is registered. In addition, this paper analyzes whether deregistration attack is possible even when an attacker attempts to establish a spoofed RRC connection to a new AMF that is different from the registered AMF. When the 5G mobile communication network system is implemented by faithfully complying with the 3GPP standard, it is determined that a deregistration attack of a UE is impossible.

  • This paper proposes the EAP-AKA scheme without UICC for extending its usage to existing WLAN/WiBro devices. To apply the current EAP-AKA scheme, the WLAN/WiBro devices require an external Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) reader. If they don't use UICC due to cost overhead and architectural problem of device, the EAP-AKA scheme loses its own advantages in security and portability aspects. The proposed scheme uses the DH key algorithm and a password for non-UICC devices instead of using the long-term key stored in UICC. The main contribution is to maintain the security and portability of the EAP-AKA while being applied to non-3GPP network devices not equipped with UICC. Furthermore, it does not require major modifications of authentication architecture in 3GPP.

  • In this paper, the possibility of a UE (User Equipment) incarceration attack using RRCRejecet and RRCRelease in 5G SNPN (Standalone Non-Public Network) is analyzed based on the 3GPP standard document. First, the cell selection and reselection procedures of the UE are analyzed, and then the processing process of the false base station and the UE before and after transmission of RRCReject and RRCRelease is analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it is possible that the false base station that transmits a strong signal causes the victim UE to establish an RRC connection to the false base station itself. In addition, if the false base station transmits an RRCReject message without integrity protection in response to the victim UE's attempt to establish an RRC connection, it is determined that the victim UE can continue to stay in the RRC connection attempt process. On the other hand, it is determined that it is impossible to incarcerate the victim UE by inducing an attempt to establish an RRC connection to another false base station using RRCRelease.

  • Despite the exponential throughput improvement in mobile communications systems, their ability to satisfy requirements of state-of-the-art and future applications of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is still under investigation. Challenges are mainly due to the inadequacy of third generation partnership project (3GPP) networks to support large amounts of devices simultaneously, while the number of AMI end-devices and the frequency of their data transmission increase with new AMI-based applications. In this introductory survey, innovative and future AMI applications and their communication requirements are first reviewed. Then, we identify challenges of 3GPP long term evolution (LTE) in enabling future AMI applications. More importantly, the latest improvements to LTE-A standard release 12 and 13 are reviewed and analyzed with regards to their potential to improve the quality of LTE-enabled AMI. It is found that 3GPP enhancements on machine type communications (MTC) standards will significantly enhance AMI communications. Beyond MTC specifications, non-MTC-specific enhancements such as carrier aggregation and multi-connectivity for user equipment will also contribute greatly to improving reliability and availability of AMI devices. The paper's focus is towards improved backhaul support for innovative and future AMI applications, beyond traditional automatic meter reading.

  • For provisioning reliable data transmission, the 3GPP RLC specification adopted a selective-repeat ARQ scheme assisted by a window-based admission control scheme. In the 3GPP ARQ, which is a member of the selective-repeat ARQ clan, inheres the reordering problem A long and irregular reordering time results in the degradation of throughput and delay performance, and may incur the overflow of the reordering buffer. Furthermore, the reordering time must be regulated to meet the requirements of some services which are loss-sensitive and delay-sensitive as well. Perceiving the reordering hazard, we propose an alternative, identified as snowball scheme, to the original admission control scheme of the 3GPP ARQ with aiming at deflating the occupancy of the reordering buffer. A unique feature of the snowball scheme is to reject a new DATA PDU if it is non-adjacent to any DATA PDU sojourning at the reordering buffer. Such an intentional rejection apparently reduces the occupancy of the reordering buffer while it may deteriorate the throughput and delay performance. Developing an analytical approximation method, we investigate the effect of snowball scheme on the saturated occupancy and throughput. Also, we, using a simulation method, evaluate the peak occupancy, normalized throughput and average delay in the practical environment. From the simulation results, we reveal that the snowball scheme is able to enhance occupancy performance as well as throughput performance compared with the original admission control scheme of the 3GPP ARQ.

  • In this paper, we propose a CP (Cyclic Prefix) detection based SSS (Secondary Synchronization Signal) detection method for initial cell search in 3GPP LTE (3rd Generation Partnership Project Long Term Evolution) FDD/TDD (Frequency Division Duplex/Time Division Duplex) dual mode downlink receiver. In general, a blind coherent SSS detection method which can detect SSS without CP detection is applied. However, coherent detection method caused performance degradation by channel compensation error at high speed environment because it uses estimated CFR (Channel Frequency Response) at PSS (Primary Synchronization Signal), and it can be more serious problem in TDD mode due to increased distance between PSS and SSS. Also blind detectionhas the drawback of high computational complexity. Therefore, we proposed a CP type pre-decision structure with non-coherent SSS detection which has stable operation in high speed channel environments for 3GPP LTE TDD mode as well as FDD mode, and can reduce computational complexity by applying CP detection before SSS detection. Simulation results show that the proposed method has stable operation for 3GPP LTE TDD/FDD dual mode downlink receiver in various channel environments.
