Evaluation of Laminate Property using Caulplate Application (카울플레이트 적용을 통한 라미네이트 특성 평가)

  • In this study, integrated co-bonded panels with the same configuration of hat stiffeners were fabricated and measured for ply waviness phenomenon. Total specimens consisted of 2 types; 1) the general co-bonded panel and 2) the co-bonded panel with caul plate made of carbon epoxy composite materials. The first general co-bonded panel specimen exhibited that laminate thickness on the stiffener location area was much thicker than the non-stiffener area and, there was ply waviness with 0.61 mm height and 3.29 mm length. In the second co-bonded panel specimen, the reduced waviness with 0.22 mm height and 1.37 length resulted in more than 50% improvements, which is due to the uniform pressure distribution of co-bonded interface by caul plate.

  • To develop a live vaccine strain against fowl typhoid and paratyphoid caused by Salmonella serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum (Salmonella Gallinarum) and Salmonella serovar Enteritidis (Salmonella Enteritidis), respectively, several nalidixic acid resistant mutants were selected from lipopolysaccharide (LPS) rough strains of Salmonella Gallinarum that escaped from fatal infection of a LPS-binding lytic bacteriophage. A non-virulent and immunogenic vaccine strain of Salmonella Gallinarum, SR2-N6, was established through in vivo pathogenicity and protection efficacy tests. SR2-N6 was highly protective against Salmonella Gallinarum and Salmonella Enteritidis and safer than Salmonella Gallinarum vaccine strain SG 9R in the condition of protein-energy malnutrition. Thus, SR2-N6 may be a safe and efficacious vaccine strain to prevent both fowl typhoid and paratyphoid.

Effect of CO Intoxication on the Pulmonary Surfactant in Rabbits (일산화탄소중독(一酸化炭素中毒)이 가토(家兎) 폐포표면활성물질(肺胞表面活性物質)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • In order to observe a possible effect of CO intoxication on the activities of surfactant, the rabbit war exposed either to 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4% CO gas for two to six hours or 0. 1% CO gas for two hours daily for 1, 3 and 5 days, and the lung extract was prepared. The tension-area diagram of the lung extract was recorded automatically using the modified Langmuir-wilhelmy balance with a synchronized recording system, and the results were compared with control (i. e. : non-CO gas exposed normal rabbits). The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The maximal and minimal surface tensions, width of the tension-area diagram at the surface area of 40% in lung extract, and stability index of the normal rabbit lung extracts were $31.6{\pm}3.11\;dynes/cm,\;8.2{\pm}0.56\;dynes/cm,\;21.4{\pm}4.40dynes/cm\;and\;1.12{\pm}0.22$, respectively. 2. The activities of surfactant in the CO gas exposed group did not show any significant change from the control. 3. The above results suggest that CO gas produced no noticeable effect on the surfactant system of the lung.

  • Tetradentate schiff bases cabalt (II) complexes; Co(SED) and Co(ο-BSDT) were synthesized and these complexes allowed to reaction with dry oxygen to form oxygen adduct cobalt(III) complexes such as $[Co(o-BSDT)(DMSO)]_2O_2,\;[Co(SED)(Py)]_2O_2\;and\;[Co(o-BSDT)(Py)]_2O_2$ in DMSO and pyridine solutions. It has been found that the oxygen adduct cobalt(III) complexes have hexacoordinated octahedral configuration with tetradentate schiff base cobalt(II), DMSO or pyridine and oxygen, and the mole ratio of oxygen to cobalt(II) complexes are 1:2. The redox processes, were investigated for Co(SEDT) and Co(ο-BSD) complexes in 0.1M TEAP-DMSO and 0.1M TEAP-pyridine by cyclic voltammetry with glassy carbon electrode. As a result the redox processes of Co(II)/Co(III) and Co(II)/Co(I) found to be reversible or quasi-reversible for non uptake oxygen complexes but oxygen adduct complexes found to be irreversible processes and reaction processes of oxygen for oxygen adduct complexes are quasi-reversible process, the potential range was $E_{pc}=-0.85{\sim}-1.19V\;and\;E_{pa}=-0.74{\sim}-0.89V$.

Characterization of D-Xylose Isomerase from Streptomyces albus (Stleptomyces albus의 D-Xylose Isomerase의 성질에 관하여)

  • Strptomyces albus T-12 which ahd been isolated and identified in the laboratory, was selected for the studies on the cultural conditions on the production of D-xylose iosmerase and the enzymological characteristics using the partially purified enzyme. The best results in the enzyme production came from D-xylose medium than wheat bran. The divalent metla ions as $Co^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Zn^{2+}\;and\;Cu^{2+}$ retard or inhibit the cell-growth at the early stages of mycelia propagations, and T-12 strain is especially sensitive to $Co^{2+}$. After 60 hours of shaking cultivation at $30^{\circ}C$ and 200 rpm, a maximum enzyme activitz, 0.49 enzyme units, was obtained. Cell-free enzyme obtained from mycelia heat-treated in the prescence of 0.5mM $Co^{2+}$, showed a 2.4-fold increase in specific than the enzyme from untreated mycelia. The specific activity of the purified enzyme through Sephadex G-150 columm showed 180 fold to the crude enzyme. The effective activators of the enzyme appeared to be $Mg^{2+}\;and\;Co^{2+}$ ions, and it exhibited the maximal enzyme activity showed at pH 7.0 and at tempersture around $80^{\circ}C$ when $Mg^{2+}\;and\;Co^{2+}$ ions were added. The enzyme isomerized D-glucose, D-xylose, D-ribose, L-arabinose, D-mannose, and L-rhamnose in the present of $Mg^{2+}\;and\;Co^{2+}$ ions as an activatiors. $Mg^{2+}\;and\;Co^{2+}$ ions were non-competitively bound at different allosterix sites of enzyme molecule. $Mg^{2+}(5mM)\;or\;Co^{2+}(1.0mM)$ protected against the thermal denaturations of the enzyme activities. The michelis constant(Km) and $V_{max}$ values of the emzyme for D-glucose and D-xylose were 0.52M, $2.12{\mu}moles/ml{\cdot}min.\;and\;0.28M,\;0.65moles/ml{\cdot}min.$, respectively.

AN EXPLORATORY STUDY COMPARING BLOOD METAL CONCENTRATIONS BETWEEN STROKE AND NON-STROKE PATIENTS IN KOREANS

  • Results from previous studies revealed that metal level in the body is related to certain types of diseases. For example. serum copper level with chronic heart failure, iron and transferrin in the blood serum with acute cerebral vascular diseases, Zn in the CNS, lead with neurotoxicity, hypertension, genetic damage, arsenic with cancer skin lesion, Al with neurobehavioral function (cognitive impairment and memory disorder), and etc. The rate of stroke has increased in recent years and several metals were found to be responsible for causing stroke. This study compared several blood metal concentrations between stroke and non-stroke patients. Patients with stroke (116 samples) and non-stroke (111 samples including lowback pain and others) participated in this study. Total of 227 blood samples were collected and participants completed questionnaires regarding age, gender, occupation, residence, alcohol, smoking, and etc. To be qualified into the stroke group, patients have never experienced stroke previously. Subjects only included ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage patients diagnosed by brain CT and brain MRI. Patients with high risk of metal exposure such as herbal intake and job related exposure were excluded. 10ml of blood samples were analyzed by ICP-MS method at the Center of Nature and Science at Sangji University. Metal geometric mean (SD) concentrations in blood of study subjects showed higher values, 2.64-36.12%, than WHO reference values in Mn, Ni, Hg, Se, and As. Metal concentration in blood of stroke patients non-adjusted for potential confounders was higher except for Hg and also higher except for Ni in adjusted for potential confounders. Co was significantly higher in stroke patients (p=0.002) than non-stroke patients adjusted for potential confounders. Regression coefficient values of stroke patients was 0.17-8.25 in each metals. Odd ratio of stroke patients had 0.96 (Ni)-2.68 (Co) compared to non-stroke cases. This result means that Co increase of 1 raises the risk ratio of stroke by 2.86 times. Based on the results, metal concentration in blood seems to affect incidence of stroke.

Gas Permeation of Y2O3-SiC Composite Membrane

  • $Y_2O_3$-SiC composite membrane was dip-coated using $Y_2O_3$ sol solution; this membrane was compared with a non- coated one. Each membrane was characterized by XRD, FE-SEM and BET techniques. Hydrogen and CO permeation were tested with self-manufactured Sievert's type equipment. $Y_2O_3$ coating was enhanced for the selectivity of the membrane ($H_2$ versus CO). The hydrogen permeation was measured at 1 bar with increasing temperatures. In case of the coated membrane, hydrogen permeation was found to be $1.24{\times}10^{-7}mol/m^2sPa$ with perm-selectivity of 4.26 at 323 K.

Corrosion Behaviors of TiN Coated Dental Casting Alloys (TiN피막 코팅된 치과주조용 합금의 부식거동)

  • Corrosion behaviors of TiN coated dental casting alloys have been researched by using various electrochemical methods. Three casting alloys (Alloy 1: 63Co-27Cr-5.5Mo, Alloy 2: 63Ni-16Cr-5Mo, Alloy 3: 63Co-30Cr-5Mo) were prepared for fabricating partial denture frameworks with various casting methods; centrifugal casting(CF), high frequency induction casting(HFI) and vacuum pressure casting(VP). The specimens were coated with TiN film by RF-magnetron sputtering method. The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiostat (EG&G Co, 263A. USA) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion morphologies were analyzed using FE-SEM and EDX. Alloy 1 and Alloy 2 showed the ${\alpha}-Co$ and ${\varepsilon}-Co$ phase on the matrix, and it was disappeared in case of TiN coated Alloy 1 and 2. In the Alloy 3, $Ni_2Cr$ second phases were appeared at matrix. Corrosion potentials of TiN coated alloy were higher than that of non-coated alloy, but current density at passive region of TiN coated alloy was lower than that of non-coated alloy. Pitting corrosion resistances were increased in the order of centrifugal casting, high frequency induction casting and vacuum pressure casting method from cyclic potentiodynamic polarization test.

Evaluation of Spatial Dose Rate in Working Environment during Non-Destructive Testing using Radioactive Isotopes (방사성동위원소를 이용한 비파괴 검사 시 작업환경 내 공간선량률 평가)

  • The radiation source used for non-destructive testing have permeability and cause a scattered radiation through collisions of surrounding materials, which causes changes in the surrounding spatial dose. Therefore, this study attempted to evaluate and analyze the distribution of spatial dose by source in the working environment during the non-destructive test using monte carlo simulation. In this study, Using FLUKA, a simulation code, simulates 60Co, 192Ir, and 75Se source used in non-destructive testing, The reliability of the source term was secured by comparing the calculated dose rate with the data of the Health and Physics Association. After that, a non-destructive test in the radiation safety facility(RT-room) was designed to evaluate the spatial dose according to the distance from the source. As a result of the spatial dose evaluation, 75Se source showed the lowest dose distribution in the frontal position and 60Co source showed a dose rate of about 15 times higher than that of 75Se and about 2 times higher than that of 192Ir. In addition, the spatial dose according to the distance tends to decrease according to the distance inverse square law as the distance from the source increases. Exceptionally, 60Co, 192Ir, and 75Se sources confirmed a slight increase within 2 m of position. Based on the results of this study, it is believed that it will be used as supplementary data for safety management of workers in radiation safety facilities during non-destructive testing using radioactive isotopes.

Improvement of the Spin Transfer Induced Switching Effect by Copper and Ruthenium Buffer Layer

  • The spin transfer induced magnetization switching has been reported to occur in magnetic multilayer structures whose scope usually consists of one stack of ferromagnetic / non-ferromagnetic / ferromagnetic (F / N / F) materials. In this work, it is shown that: 1) Copper used as a buffer layer between the free Co and the Au cap-layer can clearly increase the probability to get the spin transfer induced magnetization switching in a simple spin valve Co 11 / Cu 6/ Co 2 (nm); 2) Furthermore, when Ruthenium is simultaneously applied as a buffer layer on the Si-substrate, the critical switching currents can be reduced by $30\%$, and the absolute resistance change delta R $[{\Delta}R]$ of that stack can be enlarged by $35\%$. The enhancement of the spin transfer induced magnetization switching can be ascribed to a lower local stress in the thin Co layer caused by a better lattice match between Co and Cu and the smoothening effect of Ru on the thick Co layer.
