  • The direct extrusion with porthole die can produce condenser tube which has the competitive power in costs and qualities compared with the existing conform extrusion. In general, porthole die extrusion has a great advantage in the forming that produces the hollow sections difficult to produce by conventional extrusion with a mandrel on the stem. Especially, condenser tube manufactured by porthole die belongs to sophisticated part and demands tighter dimension tolerance and higher surface finish than any other part. In order to confirm the general of porthole die extrusion, we perform the 3D FE analysis of hot porthole extrusion in non-steady state by using DEFORM 3D and investigate a pattern of elastic deformation for porthole die through the stress analysis using ANSYS 5.5 during extrusion process.

  • The growing demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles to reduce energy consumption and air pollution is a challenge for the automotive industry. The characteristic properties of aluminum, high strengrth stiffness to weight ratio, good formability, good corrosion resistence, and recycling potential make it the ideal candidate to replace heavier materials in the car to respond to the weight resuction demand within the automotive industry. In this paper, A series of compression test was carried out to find the flow stress of A6082 at 300, 400 and $500^{\circ}C$, then we tried to estimate weldability, extrusion load and effective stress of die in the aluminum extrusion process through the 3D FE simulation at non-steady state for aluminum automotive parts.

  • In the finite element analysis of metal forming processes, the updated Lagrangian approach has been widely and effectively used to simulate the non-steady state problems. However some difficulties have arisen from abrupt flow change as in extrusion through square dies. In the present work, a ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) finite element formulation for deformation analysis are presented for rigid viscoplastic materials. The developed finite element program is applied to the analysis of square die extrusion of a square section. The computational results are compared with those from the updated Lagrangian finite element analysis.

  • This paper presents the new simulation algorithms using network methods to analysis the steady-state train voltage distribution characteristics in ac auto-transformer fed railroads. In general, the supply system of railroads is composed of non-symmetrical and unbalance transmission line. Therefore, the general method using simplified old algorithms have the self-contradictory errors because the supply line of train railroads is completely unbalanced. In this paper, the simulation results of new developed algorithms is compared with those of EMTP to confirm the effectiveness.

  • Steady state analysis of pressure and flow in water supply piping systems is a problem of great importance in hydraulic engineering. The basic equations consist of continuity equation and energy equation. The network equations are solved iteratively by using linear solution method. The resulting linear simultaneous equations are solved by frontal method. Frontal method, which is suitable to sparse matrix, gathers only non-zero entries in coefficient matrix. The suggested methodology can analyze faster than the existing routines by using smaller computer memory. The model presented in this study shows accurate and efficient results for various piping systems.

  • Global environmental concerns and the ever increasing need of energy, coupled with steady progress in renewable energy technologies, are opening up new opportunities for utilization of renewable energy resources. Distributed electricity generation is a suitable option for sustainable development thanks to the load management benefits and the opportunity to provide electricity to remote areas. Solar energy being easy to harness, non-polluting and never ending is one of the best renewable energy sources for electricity generation in present and future time. Due to the random and intermittent nature of solar source, PV plants require the adoption of an energy storage and management system to compensate fluctuations and to meet the energy demand during night hours. This paper presents an efficient, economic and technical model for the design of a MPPT based grid connected PV with battery storage and management system. This system satisfies the energy demand through the PV based battery energy storage system. The aim is to present PV-BES system design and management strategy to maximize the system performance and economic profitability. PV-BES (photovoltaic based battery energy storage) system is operated in different modes to verify the system feasibility. In case of excess energy (mode 1), Li-ion batteries are charged using CC-CV mechanism effectively controlled by fuzzy logic based PID control system whereas during the time of insufficient power from PV system (mode 2), batteries are used as backup to compensate the power shortage at load and likewise other modes for different scenarios. This operational mode change in PV-BES system is implemented by State flow chart technique based on SOC, DC bus voltages and solar Irradiance. Performance of the proposed PV-BES system is verified by some simulations study. Simulation results showed that proposed system can overcome the disturbance of external environmental changes, and controls the energy flow in efficient and economical way.

  • Purpose: This review aims at introducing 3 modeling approaches classified into 3 categories based on the purpose (estimation or prediction), structure (linear or non-linear) and phase (steady-state or dynamic-state); 1) statistical approaches, 2) kinetic modeling and 3) mechanistic modeling. We hope that this review can be a useful guide in the model-based approach of calcium metabolism as well as illustrates an application of engineering tools in studying biosystems. Background: The meaning of biosystems has been expanded, including agricultural/food system as well as biological systems like genes, cells and metabolisms. This expansion has required a useful tool for assessing the biosystems and modeling has arisen as a method that satisfies the current inquiry. To suit for the flow of the era, examining the system which is a little bit far from the traditional biosystems may be interesting issue, which can enlarge our insights and provide new ideas for prospective biosystem-researches. Herein, calcium metabolic models reviewed as an example of application of modeling approaches into the biosystems. Review: Calcium is an essential nutrient widely involved in animal and human metabolism including bone mineralization and signaling pathways. For this reason, the calcium metabolic system has been studied in various research fields of academia and industries. To study calcium metabolism, model-based system analyses have been utilized according to the purpose, subject characteristics, metabolic sites of interest, and experimental design. Either individual metabolic pathways or a whole homeostasis has been modeled in a number of studies.

  • Porthole die extrusion is profitable to manufacture long tube with hollow section. The material through portholes is gathered within chamber and welded under high pressure. This weldability which classifies the quality of tube product is affected by several variables and die shape. But, porthole die extrusion has been executed on the experience of experts due to the complicated die assembly and complexity of metal flow. Analytic approaches that are useful in profitable die design and in the improvement of productivity are inevitably demanded. Therefore, the objective of this study is respectively to analyze the behavior of metal flow and to determine welding pressure of hot extrusion product according to the various billet temperature, bearing length and tube thickness by FE analysis and its results are compared with tube expanding tests.

Thermal Stress Intensity Factors for Rigid Inclusions of Cusp Crack Shape (커스프균열형 강체함유물의 열응력 세기계수에 관한 연구)

  • The steady state thermal stress intensity factors (TSIF's) are analyzed for hypocycloid, symmetric airfoil and symmetric lip type rigid inclusions embedded in infinite elastic solids, using Boganoff's complex variable approach in plane thermoplasticity. Two thermal conditions are considered, one with an uniform heat flow disturbed by an insulated rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape and the other with an uniform heat flow disturbed by a rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape with fixed boundary temperature. The tendencies of TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape are somewhat different from those of traction free cusp cracks. However, if k=-1, the non-dimensionalized TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape become those of traction free cusp cracks like the tendencies of the SIF's under mechanical loading conditions. The thermal stress and displacement components for a rigid circular inclusion of radius Ro are drived from the results of a hypocycloid crack type rigid inclusion.
