  • Among all the natural disasters, earthquakes are the most destructive calamities since they cause a plenty of injuries and economic losses leaving behind a series of signs of panic. The present study highlights the moment-curvature relationships for the structural elements such as beam and column elements and Non-Linear Static Pushover Analysis of RC frame structures since it is a very simplified procedure of non-linear static analysis. The highly popular model namely Mander's model and Kent and Park model are considered and then, seismic risk evaluation of RC building has been conducted using SAP 2000 version 17 treating uncertainty in strength as a parameter. From the obtained capacity and demand curves, the performance level of the structure has been defined. The seismic fragility curves were developed for the variations in the material strength and damage state threshold are calculated. Also the comparison of experimental and analytical results has been conducted.

  • The compression index of clay distributed in the west and south coast of the Korean Peninsula had been studied. Compression index was obtained from the conventional consolidation test, and was conducted accordingly to obtain the field virgin compression curve by means of Schmertmann's graphical correction. To examine a correlation closely between physical properties of soils($e_o$, LL, w) and compression index(Cc), linen. and non-linear regression analysis were employed based on the data collected from tests. The conclusions are as follows. The compression index obtained by means of Schmereann's graphical correction is about 1.16 times for the value of original oedometer test curve for U/D samples. Non-liner regression curve was preferable to establish a correlation equation rather than linear regression curve. All derived equations so far achieved have been summarized and given. However, linear equation is better for practical use so that part by part simplified linear equations were also suggested alternatively together with their own non-linear regression curve.

  • Background: Breast cancer is one the most common cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide. The aims of this study were to investigate the impact of dietary factors and health status indicators on breast cancer (BC) incidence. Materials and Methods: Risk factor data (RFD) of 89,404 individuals (15-64 years old) were gathered by questionnaire and laboratory examinations through a cross sectional study from the Non-Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (NCDSC) of Iran. BC incidences of all provinces through 2001-2006 segregated by age and gender were obtained from the Cancer Registry Ministry of Health (CRMH). Results: a significant positive relationship was seen between diabetes mellitus, fish comsupmption, percent of academic education and non-consumption of fruit, and breast cancer in women. However, non fish consumption, percent age illiteracy and taking fruit showed a significant negative relationship with the incidence of breast cancer. In addition, multiple linear regression analysis showed associations among percentage with academic education, fruit consumption and diabetes. Conclusions: We conclude that dietary factors such as fish and furit consumption, dairy products, health status indicators, academic education, and some diseases like diabetes mellitus can affect the BC incidence, although the results of ecologic studies like this must naturally be interpreted with caution.

  • The thick plate produced by rolling process is used as the basic members of a ship structure. In this paper, we present a setup model to control the asymmetric factors causing plate bending in the upper or lower direction during rolling. A series of finite element analysis are conducted to predict the relationship between various asymmetric factors and plate bending. The setup model is developed by regressing the relationship to the linear equations with several non-dimensional parameters. The setup model is verified by a pilot rolling test and applied to actual rolling conditions. Results show that the model is substantial to predict the asymmetric deformation in the plate rolling process.

  • We investigate an extension of Schauder's theorem by studying the relationship between various s-numbers of an operator T and its adjoint T*. We have three main results. First, we present a new proof that the approximation number of T and T* are equal for compact operators. Second, for non-compact, bounded linear operators from X to Y, we obtain a relationship between certain s-numbers of T and T* under natural conditions on X and Y . Lastly, for non-compact operators that are compact with respect to certain approximation schemes, we prove results for comparing the degree of compactness of T with that of its adjoint T*.

  • Artificial neural networks (ANNs), for a first time, were successfully developed for the modeling and prediction of solvent effects on rate constant of [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of diethyl azodicarboxylate with ethyl vinyl ether in various solvents with diverse chemical structures using quantitative structure-activity relationship. The most positive charge of hydrogen atom (q$^+$), dipole moment ($\mu$), the Hildebrand solubility parameter (${\delta}_H^2$) and total charges in molecule (q$_t$) are inputs and output of ANN is log k$_2$ . For evaluation of the predictive power of the generated ANN, the optimized network with 68 various solvents as training set was used to predict log k$_2$ of the reaction in 16 solvents in the prediction set. The results obtained using ANN was compared with the experimental values as well as with those obtained using multi-parameter linear regression (MLR) model and showed superiority of the ANN model over the regression model. Mean square error (MSE) of 0.0806 for the prediction set by MLR model should be compared with the value of 0.0275 for ANN model. These improvements are due to the fact that the reaction rate constant shows non-linear correlations with the descriptors.

  • In this study, the reliability of a commercial ER-type corrosion sensor was evaluated under an accelerated corrosion environment to verify its suitability for application in monitoring of ship's seawater piping system. A closed-loop pump piping testbed was designed and constructed to compare the wall thickness reduction of the pipe and the response from the sensor. The sensor was attached inside the pipe near the outlet of the pump that was exposed to a 3.5% NaCl solution with or without copper accelerated acetic acid (CASS). The results demonstrated that the presence of CASS significantly increased the corrosivity of the solution as well as the thickness reduction of the pipe, as expected. On the other hand, the corrosion products formed by the solution with CASS were thicker compared with those without CASS. The sensor response to temperature variation was found to be a clear linear relationship for the solution without CASS but there was a non-linear relationship where CASS was present.

  • The study investigates the effects of luminance contrast, which is the contrast between text color and background color, on readability in VDT environments. Our research goals are to prove that the relationship between luminance contrast and readability is not linear and to explore the best luminance contrast level for optimal readability. We conducted two pretests before the main experiment to determine the operational readability and luminance contrast levels. We also conducted a controlled main experiment, in which luminance contrast, reading amount and screen size were tested in terms of its relation with readability. The results of the main experiment indicate that the readability has a non-linear relation with luminance contrast, and the optimal readability is obtained when the contrast is equal to 0.951. Furthermore, the non-linear function and optional point stay constant regardless of screen size and reading amount. The paper ends with implications of the results that maximal contrast does not always mean the optimal readability.

  • The study aims to investigate whether Musharakah management has an impact on Chinese and Malaysian business partnerships. To estimate the relationship between Musharakah and the Sino-Malaysian partnership, this study uses a panel econometric technique namely pooled ordinary least squares. Ordinary Least Squares regression (OLS) is a common technique for estimating coefficients of linear regression equations which describe the relationship between one or more independent quantitative variables and a dependent variable. Data was retrieved from the annual reports (from 2009 to 2019) of non-financial firms listed on the stock exchange of China and Malaysia. Four partnership measures (i.e., Musharakah, Mudarabah, Tawuruq, and Kafalah) were used to estimate the impact of Musharakah on the Sino-Malaysian partnership. Empirical results reveal that Musharakah and Mudarabah are positively related to Kafalah but the relationship is statistically insignificant. Alternatively, Musharakah is positively and significantly related to Mudarabah. Musharakah and Mudarabah have a positive but insignificant relationship. The findings of this study suggest that management of partnership has a positive impact on firm partnership. Furthermore, it supports the hypothesis that improving partnership enhances Musharakah, which has a positive impact on the firm's partnership.

  • Purpose: The balance between miscanthus production and its cost effectiveness depends greatly on its moisture content during post processing. The objective of this research was to measure the moisture content using a non-destructive and non-contact methodology for in situ applications. Methods: The moisture content of comminuted miscanthus was controlled using a closed chamber, a humidifier, a precision weigher, and a real-time monitoring software developed in this research. A CMOS sensor equipped with $50{\times}$ magnifier lens was used to capture magnified images of the conditioned materials with moisture content level from 5 to 30%. The hypothesis is that when light is incident on the comminuted particles in an inclined manner, higher moisture content results in light being reflected with a higher intensity. Results: A linear regression analysis for an initiative hypothesis based on general histogram analysis yielded insufficient correlations with low significance level (<0.31) for the determination coefficient. A significant relationship (94% confidence level) was determined at level 108 in a reverse accumulative histogram proposed based on a revised hypothesis. A linear regression model with the value at level 108 in the reverse accumulative histogram for a magnified image as the independent variable and the moisture content of comminuted miscanthus as the dependent variable was proposed as the estimation model. The calibrated linear regression model with a slope of 92.054 and an offset of 32.752 yielded 0.94 for the determination coefficient (RMSE = 0.2%). The validation test showed a significant relationship at the 74% confidence level with RMSE 6.4% (n = 36). Conclusions: To compensate the inconsistent significance between calibration and validation, an estimation model robust against various systematic interferences is necessary. The economic efficiency of miscanthus, which is a promising energy resource, can be improved by the real-time measurement of its crucial material properties.
