  • Recent research has shown that quadrupole noise has a significant influence on the overall characteristics of flow-induced noise and on the performance of underwater appendages such as sonar domes. However, advanced research generally uses the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings analogy without considering the quadrupole source to reduce computational cost. In this study, flow-induced noise is predicted by using an LES turbulence model and a developed formulation, called the formulation Q1As method to properly take into account the quadrupole source. The noise around a circular cylinder in an underwater environment is examined for two cases with different velocities. The results from the method are compared to those obtained from the experiments and the permeable FW-H method. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data, with a difference of less than 1 dB, which indicates that the formulation Q1As method is suitable for use in predicting quadrupole noise around underwater appendages.

  • Recently, TV makers have tried for high sound quality and power, However, due to the high power of the speaker the structure of set brings about a sound vibration problem. Therefore, this paper illustrates the sound vibration phenomenon for a monotype TV set and suggests guide lines for reducing the sound vibration in the design of TV sets,

  • Workers engaged in construction works have been exposed to high levels of noise during their work in tunnels. Noise is one of the major health hazards for employees working in construction sites. The aim of this study is to evaluate the noise levels generating from tunneling equipments such as jumbo drills, backhoes, payloaders, shotcrete machines and service cars. Explosion and turbo fan noises were also monitored. A high precision sound level meter was introduced for measuring LAeq, LAFmax, LAFmin and LCpeak noises in 5 tunneling work sites that were located in Seoul, Kyunggi-do and Kangwon-do areas with NATM and shield methods. The highest noise was recorded by explosion(151.9 dB LCpeak) followed by jumbo drills of higher than 110 dB(A) LAeq. Backhoe normally generated 90~110 dB(A) LAeq while breaking work of rock showed additional around 5~15 dB(A). Noise exposure levels for payloader and shotcrete machine scored more than 90 dB(A) which might be a source of noise-induced hearing loss. Additional research in revealing noise levels from construction equipments operating in tunneling works may enhance the protection of workers who exposed to noise primarily at the sites.

  • Background: Noise-induced hearing loss is a well-known occupational disease that affects many fish harvesters from many fisheries worldwide, whose risk factor is prolonged exposure to hazardous noise levels. To date, academic research activities and regulatory bodies have not provided any comparative analysis among the existing methods to assess noise exposure levels of fish harvesters. This paper provides a comparison of four relevant assessment methods of noise exposure, examining the results of a measurement campaign performed onboard small fishing vessels from Newfoundland and Labrador. Methods: We traveled onboard 11 vessels engaged in multiple fisheries from Newfoundland and Labrador and performed extensive noise exposure surveys using the simplified International Maritime Organization method, the full-day measurement method, and the two methods provided by ISO 9612:2009, the task-based method and job-based method (JBM). Results: The results showed that the four methods yield similar values when the noise components are dominated by the engine and auxiliaries (steady-state sources); when noise components are dominated by the fishing gear, task-based method and the simplified International Maritime Organization method estimates are less accurate than JBM, using full-day measurements as baseline. Conclusion: The JBM better assesses noise exposure in small-scale fisheries, where noise exposure has significant variance and uncertainties on the exposure levels are higher.

  • When a telecommunications line is encountered with neighboring electric lines, induced currents are produced in the circuit formed by those lines and earth. The induced currents sometimes impose intolerable noise problems on the telecommunications lines. In this study, screening factor indication the level of screening effect is defined and calculated several cases together with numerical results.

  • The induced voltage on the telecommunication cable generated by nearby electric railway system may bring about telecommunication errors and safety accidents. In order to reduce the induced voltage and to achieve communication reliability, the effect of the shield cables and the recent double-track railway systems on the inductive interference should be investigated. This paper analyzes the parameters which seriously influence the induced voltage on the telecommunication cables which run parallel with a AT-fed electric railway line, and provides a simulation-based approach to estimate the amount of the induced voltage. Simulation results indicate that the induced noise voltage generated by a double-track railway decreases by 18 % compared to that generated by a single-track railway, showing the screening effect by nearby track. The induced noise voltages on the 50%-shielded cable and 15%-shielded cable decrease to 1/8 and 1/15 of the induced voltage on the non-shielded cable, respectively. A meaningful shield effect is achieved and the induced voltage is minimized by the double-track railway and the shielded cable.

  • Although noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a significant public health problem, many people might not be aware that exposure to loud noise could occur hearing loss. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and analyze how importantly and seriously people are aware of NIHL using a 22-question survey. It was administered to random 150 people including between 20 s to 60 s. The questionnaire contained questions about i) views toward general health issues including hearing loss and tinnitus, ii) noise exposure, and iii) views toward hearing protection. Results showed that hearing loss was defined on a likert scale as 'a very big problem' by 17.33 % of respondents compared with other health issues. Surprisingly, most respondents (82 %) had not heard, read, or seen anything lately related to the issue of hearing loss. Many respondents had experience hearing problem or tinnitus under loud noise situations (85 %), however, only 11.33 % of respondents had used earplugs. Fortunately, many could be motivated to try ear protection if they were advised by a medical professional (80 %) or were aware of the potential for permeant hearing loss (78.67 %). We concluded that awareness of the potential for permanent hearing loss with noise and effective methods of hearing protection should be announced to public for preventing NIHL.

  • In this paper, we propose two LC voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) that improve both phase noise and tuning range. With both 1/f induced low-frequency noise and low-frequency thermal noise around DC or around harmonics suppressed significantly by the employment of a current-current negative feedback (CCNF) loop, the phase noise in the CCNF LC VCO has been improved by about 10 dB at 6 MHz offset compared to the conventional LC VCO. The phase noise of the CCNF VCO was measured as -112 dBc/Hz at 6 MHz offset from 5.5 GHz carrier frequency. Also, we present a bandwidth-enhanced LC VCO whose tuning range has been increased about 250 % by connecting the varactor to the bases of the cross-coupled pair. The phase noise of the bandwidth-enhanced LC-tank VCO has been improved by about 6 dB at 6 MHz offset compared to the conventional LC VCO. The phase noise reduction has been achieved because the DC-decoupling capacitor Cc prevents the output common-mode level from modulating the varactor bias point, and the signal power increases in the LC-tank resonator. The bandwidth-enhanced LC VCO represents a 12 % bandwidth and phase noise of -108 dBc/Hz at 6 MHz offset.

  • This paper presents a experimental evidence of the generation of the earth potential and communication line noise from the electric railway. There is a critical measurement err in case of measuring the electrical power induced noise voltage and degree of cable balance in the field of earth potential generated. As a results, it has been found that the conventional cable has more noise immunity than shielded cable near the railway where the earth current flows through the sheath layer.
