  • The feedforward control algorithm for active noise control exhibits high stability and performance robustness. But it has a slow convergence speed and requires a correlated reference signal. Broadband active control systems typically use feedback control in order to increase the convergence speed and to avoid the problems associated with obtaining and decoupling a suitable reference signal. However, it is well known that conventional feedback control systems have a gain-bandwidth limitation and stability problem. This paper presents the new system based on the combination of both feedforward and feedback system in order to increase the convergence speed. The proposed system uses a proposed control algorithm termed "optional-summed" algorithm in which the "optional summed reference signal" comprised of weighted sum of an original reference signal and a eror signal, is used as an input to an adaptive system. Thus, the proposed system can have faster convergence speed and better performance than either feedforward or feedback system using the Filtered-x LMS algorithm as almost equivalent complexity of computation as it. Several simulation results demonstrating the good properties of the proposed adaptive system as well as verifying the analytical results are also presented in the paper.

  • Time-series models like AR-ARX and ARMAX, provide a robust way to capture the dynamic properties of structures, and their residuals can be effectively used as features for damage detection. Even though several research papers discuss the implementation of AR-ARX and ARMAX models for damage diagnosis, they are basically been exploited so far for detecting the time instant of damage and also the spatial location of the damage. However, the inverse problem associated with damage quantification i.e. extent of damage using time series models is not been reported in the literature. In this paper, an approach to detect the extent of damage by combining the ARMAX model by formulating the inverse problem as a multi-constrained optimization problem and solving using a newly developed hybrid adaptive differential search with dynamic interaction is presented. The proposed variant of the differential search technique employs small multiple populations which perform the search independently and exchange the information with the dynamic neighborhood. The adaptive features and local search ability features are built into the algorithm in order to improve the convergence characteristics and also the overall performance of the technique. The multi-constrained optimization formulations of the inverse problem, associated with damage quantification using time series models, attempted here for the first time, can considerably improve the robustness of the search process. Numerical simulation studies have been carried out by considering three numerical examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique in robustly identifying the extent of the damage. Issues related to modeling errors and also measurement noise are also addressed in this paper.

  • This paper is a study on error correction for three-dimensional shape reconstruction based on factorization method. The existing error correction method based on factorization has a limitation of correction because it is optimized globally. Thus in this paper, we propose our new method which can find and correct the only major error influence factor toward three-dimensional reconstructed shape instead of global approach. We define the error-influenced factor in two-dimensional re-projection deviation space and directly control the error components. In addition, it is possible to improve the error correcting performance by recursively applying the above process. This approach has an advantage under noise because it controls the major error components without depending on any geometric information. The performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulation with synthetic and real image sequence to demonstrate noise robustness.

  • In digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T), which is the European digital terrestrial television standard, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted for signal transmission. The main reasons using OFDM are to increase the robustness against the frequency selective fading and impulse noise, and to use available bandwidth efficiently. However, channel variation within an OFDM symbol destroys orthogonality between subcarriers, resulting in inter-carrier interference (ICI), which increases an error floor in proportional to maximum Doppler spread. This paper provides an ICI analysis in both time and frequency domains while existing literatures analyze the ICI effects mainly in frequency domain and proposes the algorithms that estimate the channel impulse response and channel variation using least square (LS) algorithm which is the most simple channel estimation technique. And we propose adaptive channel estimation algorithm that estimates the velocity of terminals. The simulation results show that proposed algorithm has similar performance with about 1.5% computational complexity of noise and ICI reduction LS algorithm in low speed environments.

  • In this paper we deal with a design of integral sliding mode controller to reject the disturbance force acting on the suspension system in the magnetically levitated system which is propelled by the linear induction motor. The control scheme comprises an integral controller which is designed for achieving zero steady-state error under step disturbances, and a sliding mode controller which is designed for enhancing robustness under plant uncertainties. A proper continuous design signal is introduced to overcome the chattering problem. The disturbance force produced by the linear motor is formularized by using a curve fitting of the experimental raw data. Computer simulations show the effectiveness of the designed integral sliding mode controller to reject the disturbance force.

  • As the demand for slim laptops requires ion'-height optical disc drives, vibration problems of optical disc drives are of great concern. Additionally, with the decrease of a track width and a depth of focus in high density drives, studies on vibration resonance between mechanical parts become more important. From the vibration point of view, the performance of optical disc drives is closely related with the relative displacement between a disc and an objective lens which is controlled by servo mechanism. In other words, to read and write data properly, the relative displacement between an optical disc and an objective lens should be within a certain limit. The relative displacement is dependent on not only an anti-vibration mechanism design but also servo control capability. Good servo controls can make compensation for poor mechanisms, and vice versa. In a usual development process, robustness of the anti-vibration mechanism is always verified with the servo control of an objective lens. Engineers partially modify servo gain margin in case of a data reading error. This modification cannot correct the data reading error occasionally and the mechanism should be redesigned more robustly. Therefore it is necessary to verify a mechanism with respect to the possible servo gain plot. In this study we propose the experimental verification method far anti-vibration mechanism with respect to the existing servo gain plot. This method verifies axial vibration characteristics of optical disc drives on the basis of transmissibility. Using this method, we verified our mechanism and modified the mechanism for better anti-vibration characteristics.

  • Digital watermarking has drawn extensive attention for protecting digital contents from unauthorized copying. This paper proposes a new watermarking scheme in frequency domain for copyright protection of digital audio. In our proposed watermarking system, the original audio is segmented into non-overlapping frames. Watermarks are then embedded into the selected prominent peaks in the magnitude spectrum of each frame. Watermarks are extracted by performing the inverse operation of watermark embedding process. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is robust against various kinds of attacks such as noise addition, cropping, resampling, re-quantization, MP3 compression, and low pass filtering. Our proposed watermarking system outperforms Cox's method in terms of imperceptibility, while keeping comparable robustness with the Cox's method. Our proposed system achieves SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) values ranging from 20 dB to 28 dB. This is in contrast to Cox's method which achieves SNR values ranging from only 14 dB to 23 dB.

  • This paper describes a robust watermark decoding model using a SVM(Support Vector Machine). First, the embedding process is performed inversely for a watermarked signal. And then the watermark is extracted using the proposed model. For SVM training of the proposed model, data are generated that are watermarks extracted from sounds containing watermarks by four different embedding schemes. BER(Bit Error Rate) values of the data are utilized to determine a threshold value employed to create training set. To evaluate the robustness, 14 attacks selected in StirMark, SMDI and STEP2000 benchmarking are applied. Consequently, the proposed model outperformed previous method in PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) and BER. It is noticeable that the proposed method achieves BER 1% below in the case of PSNR greater than 10 dB.

  • An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is a special case of multicarrier transmission, where a single data stream is transmitted over a number of lower-rate subcarriers. One of the main reasons to use OFDM is to increase robustness against frequency-selective fading or narrowband interference. However, in the radio systems the distortion introduced by high power amplifiers (HPA's) such as traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA) considered in this paper, is also critical. Since the signal amplitude of the OFDM system is Rayleigh-distributed, the performance of the OFDM system is significantly degraded by the nonlinearity of the HPA in the OFDM transmitter. In this paper, we propose a simplicial canonical piecewise-linear (SCPWL) model based digital predistorter to compensate for nonlinear distortion introduced by an HPA in an OFDM system. Computer simulation is carried on an OFDM system under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with 16-QAM and 64-QAM modulation schemes and modulator/demodulator implemented with 1024-point FFT/IFFT. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed predistorter achieves significant performance improvement by effectively compensating for the nonlinearity introduced by the HPA.
