  • For external noise prediction of railway vehicles, sophisticated individual source modelling as well as appropriate noise propagation model from the sources is necessary to ensure the accuracy of the predicted results and contributions of each equipment to the overall noise levels. Accurate and reasonable identification procedures of sound sources of equipment including source strength, directivity and positions installed in the train play an important role in a prediction model, since it is not easy to establish a simple model for the sources with a single rule due to the complexity of source characteristics of equipment in size and directivity pattern. This paper guidelines practical considerations for identification of noise sources in railway vehicles including typical source characteristics of several sub-systems that emits noise to the environment, particularly for electric multiple unit(EMU), and verify effectiveness of assumptions used in the modelling of equipment by measurement with a simple part. The predicted external noise level of a complete train using Exnoise, which was developed by Hyundai-Rotem and has been verified in the a lot of field-tests, incorporating source modelling considered in this paper shows close correlation with the measured ones.

  • We have all heard sounds that did not sound "right" while riding in an automobile. Objectionable sounds are difficult to find and understand because the sound field is complex and dynamic in the near field of an automobile. Many different noise sources and transmission paths must be understood before an engineering change can be recommended. This paper reviews the fundamental characterization of sound and chscusses the Sound Intensity measurement technique. Sound intensity measurements locate sources and sinks of acoustic energy. Used with narrowband analysis equipment, acoustic noise sources can be identified. Sound intensity measurements are made -in-situ and do not require specmi anechoic facilities. The measurement results in a vector representation of the near field sound field and can discriminate between multiple sound sources.d sources.

  • An air-conditioner has various noise sources such as a fan noise, a motor noise, and a vibration induced noise. To reduce these noise effectively, noise sources must be identified. Especially in this paper, the structure borne sound radiated from the motor bracket of the indoor air-conditioner is considered. To do this, the operational deflection shape, which is used for understanding of the behavior of the motor bracket at a particular frequency, is obtained and compared with the sound intensity, which is used for the noise identification. Through this study, the noise sources of indoor air-conditioner are defined and the effective noise reduction method is proposed.

  • KITECH and ODS performed a study of internal and external noise prediction of the Korean high speed prototype test train(HSR 350X). The object of this study was 3 kinds of cars, trailer car(TT2), motorized car(TMI ) and power car(TPI) and the predicted noise was for the two different driving speeds in free field and tunnel conditions. Data of carbody design and noise sources were delivered from manufactures. Some of noise sources which were not available in the project team, were chosen by experiences of ODS. Internal noise level of each car was predicted for two cases i.e, at 300 km/h and 350 km/h. In addition sound transmission path and dominant noise sources were also investigated for each section of the car, which is circular shell typed part of whole carbody. In case of TT2, the dominating sound transmission path is the (floor in terms of structure-borne noise and air-borne noise. The main noise sources are structure-borne noise from the yaw-damper and air-borne noise from the wheel/rail contact, whereas the dominating sound transmission path of TMI are floor and sidewall below the window in terms of structure-borne noise. The main noise sources of TMI are structure-borne noise from motor/gear unit and the yaw-damper in the free field, and air-borne noise from the wheel/rail contact and structure-borne noise from motor/gear unit in the tunnel. Through the external noise prediction for the KHST test train formation, the noise form the wheel/rail contact is estimated as one of the major sources. In addition, the noise specification of sub-component was proposed for managing each sub-surpplier to reach the KHST noise requirement. The specification provide the sound power of machinery part and transmission loss of component of carbody structure. The predicted noise level in each case exceeded the required limit. Through this study, the noise characteristics of the test train were investigated by simulation, and then the actual test will be performed in near future. Both measured and calculated data will be compared and further work for noise reduction will be continued.

  • In order to control the railway noise, the radiation characteristic of the noise during the train passage should be analyzed. Generally, the major noise sources for Korean Train Express are the rolling noise and power unit noise up to 300km/h. In this paper, we describe on a train model that is considered to be a row of point sources to calculate the radiation characteristic. The calculation results are compared with short distance measurement. (omitted)

  • This study is concerned with the reduction of noise radiation by an industrial fan unit. First, spectral decomposition method is used to decompose the spectrogram obtained in experiments into source function and noise transfer function, and then major noise generation sources are investigated. Among the noise sources involved in the fan unit. this article is focused on the noise source due to vibration of panels of the unit housing. It is shown here that noise radiation associated with the panel vibration can be as significant in some frequency ranges as that associated with other noise sources such as aeroacoustic fan noise.

  • Identification of noose sources, their locations and strengths, has been taken great attention. The methods that can identify noise sources normally assume that noise sources are located in a free field. However, the sound in a reverberant field consists of that coming directly from the source plus sound reflected or scattered by the walls or objects in the field. In contrast to the exterior sound field. reflections are added to sound field. Therefore, we haute to consider the reverberation effect on the source identification method. The main objective of this paper is to identify noise source in the reverberant field. At fist, we try to identify noise sources in a rigid wall emc;psire using the beamforming method. In many cases of practical interest, the wall has admittance so that random reflections occur in an enclosure. In this paper, we assumed the complex reverberant field in the enclosure to be the sum of plane caves with random Incidence and magnitude. Then we try to explain effects of reverberant field at interior source identification.

  • This preliminary study is about the application of the compound source to the active noise barrier system as control sources. A compound source is composed of two monopole sources but having opposite phase. However, both monopole sources in one compound source are not independently controlled. The source strength of monopole source close to the noise source is proportional to the other one. Therefore, the cost for the hardware system is cheaper than usual system but known to possibly having a similar performance in generating anti-noise acoustic field. In this study, using a simple active noise barrier system model having a non-reflective floor, the effectiveness of the system with compound sources is investigated through computer simulations and shows 30~40 % performance improvement of noise reduction.

  • This paper describes the evaluation of noise influence of residental and boundary areas from power plant noise sources of 1200MW combined cycle power plant. Noise assessments are carried out by based on the ISO 3744, ISO 9613-1 and ISO 9613-2 to predict the noise distribution to satisfy the recommended noise level at specific locations and to calculate properly the octave noise power of main noise sources such as power transformers. air-intakes, stacks.
