  • As the recently soaring wireless traffic, small-cell techniques have been actively studied in order to support such a wireless demand for cellular wireless networks. This paper focuses on the inter-cell interference neutralization to resolve the main barrier for implementing small-cell cellular networks. Assuming that each message is delivered to the final destination by the help of base stations or relays, ergodic interference neutralization is proposed, which exploits the time-varying nature of wireless channels. The previous approach based on amplify-and-forward (AF) suffers from severe performance degradation in the low signal-to-noise (SNR) regime due to noise amplification. On the other hand, the proposed interference neutralization based on recently developed compute-and-forward (CF) fixes such a problem and improves the performance in the low SNR regime.

  • Broadcast nature of wireless medium and path-loss reduction create a favourable condition for collaborative communications (CC) among single-antenna users to gain the powerful benefits of multi-antenna system without the demand for physical arrays. This paper proposes a CC strategy adapting to the propagation environment changes by optimizing the transmit signal amplification factors to simplify the structure of maximum likelihood (ML) detector and to obtain the minimum error probability as well. The closed-form BER expression was also derived and compared to the simulation results to evaluate the performance of the suggested solution. A variety of numerical results revealed the cooperation significantly outperforms non-cooperative counterpart under flat Rayleigh fading channel plus AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise).

  • Transmission of unwanted vibration to sensitive systems can cause various problems including performance degradation and system malfunction. The most common approach to limit the transmission of harmful vibration disturbances to the sensitive system is adapting passive vibration isolator. The classical passive vibration isolator comprising a viscous damper and spring element in parallel, however, exhibits conflicting performance characteristics in that low amplification at the resonance, which is desirable, can only be achieved at the sacrifice of vibration isolation performance in high frequency region, which is undesirable. In this paper, vibration isolation characteristics of various passive isolator schemes in literature to circumvent this conflict are introduced and compared.

  • Generally the piezo-composites have superior hydrostatic response characteristics than PZT ceramics due to both the stress amplification effect in axial direction and stress reduction effects in radial direction. This paper described material properties of a 1-3 type piezo-composite that fabricated with ceramic injection molding (CIM) technology. The electro-mechanical performances of the composite have been analyzed using FEM and the physical properties of the composite have been measured with the vol. % of the PZT ceramics. Based on the results, the $k_t$ increased rapidly as the vol. % of the PZT ceramics increased up to 30 vol. % and saturated the constant value in the above region. Also the experimental results have good agreement with the simulation values of the composite. Finally we developed the composites having high piezoelectric properties than the PZT ceramics with the CIM technology.

  • Seismic control performance of MR dampers, which have severe nonlinearity, differs with respect to the dynamic characteristics of an earthquake such as magnitude, frequency and duration. In this study, the effects of excitation characteristics on the equivalent linear system of a building structure with the MR damper are investigated through numerical analysis for artificial ground motions generated from different response spectrums. The equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is calculated using Newmark and Hall's equations for ground motion amplification factors. It is found that the equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is dependent on the ratio of the maximum friction force of the MR damper over excitation magnitude. frequency contents of the earthquake ground motion affects the equivalent damping ratio of long-period structures considerably. Also, additional damping effect caused by interaction between the viscousity and friction of the MR damper is observed. Finally, response reduction factors for equivalent linear systems are proposed in order to improve accuracy in the prediction of the actual nonlinear response.

  • A tooth profile modification for loaded gears is used to avoid a tooth impact. Since a tooth profile error causes amplification of the cumbersome whine noise in automotive gear transmissions, an optimal quantity of tooth profile modifications must be obtained for good performance in the vibration sense. In this paper, a tooth profile modification curve considering profile manufacturing errors and elastic deformation of the gear tooth is formulated; in addition, transmission errors of the gear system with modified teeth are verified. The equivalent excitation due to transmission errors is formulated. For experimental evaluation of the transmission error, the transmission error for a simple gear system was measured by two rotational laser vibrometers. Finally, we perform a comparative analysis between the calculated and measured responses to the excitations due to the transmission error to verify the practicability of the application to automotive transmissions.

  • Microseismic monitoring is utilized for the performance verification and safety management of the structure by detecting fine levels of damage. In order to construct a highly reliable microseismic monitoring system, the role of signal conditioner is critical. The signal conditioner helps with accurate data collection and precision control of the device, and performs additional functions such as signal conversion, linearization, and amplification. In this technical report, noise reduction signal conditioner suitable for mining sites was developed and reviewed for the purpose of implementing more precise monitoring by supplementing the previously developed microseismic monitoring system.

  • To restore image degraded by motion blur and additive noise, it is very difficult. In conventional restoration method, regularization is usually applied to all over the image without considering the local characteristics of image. As a result, ringing artifacts appear in edge regions and the noise amplification is introduced in flat regions. To solve this problem we propose an adaptive restoration method using directional regularization operator considering edges and the regularization operator with no direction for flat regions. We verified that the proposed method showed better results in the resolution. As a result it showed visually better image and improved better ISNR further than the conventional methods.
