  • In this study, effective compressive strength and nodal zone of Strut-and-Tie Model are studied to propose a new design method for RC T-type pier coping for prevention of sudden brittle failure. The coping which transmits loads of bridge to pier should be properly designed to retain ductile behavior. In order to carry out this proper design using STM, tie must yield before concrete fails, and a stress at strut should not exceed a certain effective stress. Therefore, reasonable determination of the effective compressive strength of strut by considering stress states at the nodal zone exactly is very important. Since conventional STM is applied under assumption that all nodes are under hydrostatic stress state, actual non-hydrostatic stress state in nodal zone caused by geometrical characteristics, loading conditions, support conditions of structures can not be considered properly. In order to apply STM for design of RC T-type pier coping, the non-hydrostatic stress state of nodal zone is considered and effective compressive strength is proposed. Then, a new design method of RC T-type pier coping which applies the principle of superposition to obtain optimum ductile behavior is rationally designed.

  • A very flexible beam can be used to model various types of continuous mechanical parts such as cables and wires. In this paper, the dynamic properties of a very flexible beam, included in a multibody system, are analyzed using absolute nodal coordinates formulation, which is based on finite element procedures, and the general continuum mechanics theory to represent the elastic forces. In order to consider the dynamic interaction between a continuous large deformable beam and a rigid multibody system, a combined system equations of motion is derived by adopting absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body coordinates. Using the derived system equation, a computation method for the dynamic stress during flexible multibody simulation is presented based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, and its reliability is verified by a commercial program NASTRAN. This method is significant in that the structural and multibody dynamics models can be unified into one numerical system. In addition, to analyze a multibody system including a very flexible beam, formulations for the sliding joint between a very deformable beam and a rigid body are derived using a non-generalized coordinate, which has no inertia or forces associated with it. In particular, a very flexible catenary cable on which a multibody system moves along its length is presented as a numerical example.

  • The United Arab Emirates is currently building and operating four units of the APR-1400 developed by a South Korean vendor, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). This paper attempts to perform APR-1400 reactor core analysis by using the well-known two-step method. The two-step method was applied to the APR-1400 first cycle using the open-source nodal diffusion code, KOMODO. In this study, the group constants were generated using CASMO-4 fuel transport lattice code. The simulation was performed in Hot Zero Power (HZP) at steady-state and transient conditions. Some typical parameters necessary for the Nuclear Design Report (NDR) were evaluated in this paper, such as effective neutron multiplication factor, control rod worth, and critical boron concentration for steady-state analysis. Other parameters such as reactivity insertion, power, and fuel temperature changes during the Reactivity Insertion Accident (RIA) simulation were evaluated as well. The results from KOMODO were verified using PARCS and SIMULATE-3 nodal core simulators. It was found that KOMODO gives an excellent agreement.

  • This paper presents the detailed derivation of optimal nodal price for active power to regionally evaluate system loss and congestion cost. The method is to decompose them into different components corresponding to system loss, transmission congestion, voltage constraint, and so on. The decomposed information for nodal price can be used to provide economic signals for generation or transmission investment as well as to improve the efficient usage of power grid and congestion management. The result of case study on IEEE 30 bus system is reported to illustrate the proposed method.

  • The recent improvement in the performance of digital processor, the application of control technology, which used in the HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) system with the digital processors, has increased. Having this research development as the basis, this paper presents an achievement of progression by tuning the parameter of PI controller based on Genetic Algorithms(GAs) and by controlling with PI controller with a developed simulator by applying the Matrix operating function, voltage source switching element, modified nodal analysis which can include transformer and the backward Euler which does not create the problem of numerical oscillation. As a result, I expect this development in the simulator HVDC System to bring more application in the field of control technology research with an expanded practicality.

  • This paper illustrates a new nodal effective load model for nodal probabilistic production cost simulation of the load point in a composite power system. The new effective load model includes capacities and uncertainties of generators as well as transmission lines. The CMELDC based on the new effective load model at HLII has been developed also. The CMELDC can be obtain from convolution integral processing of the outage capacity probabilistic distribution function of the fictitious generator and the original load duration curve given at the load point. It is expected that the new model for the CMELDC proposed. In this study will provide some solutions to many problems based on nodal and decentralized operation and control of an electric power systems under competition environment in future. The CMELDC based on the new model at HLII will extend the application areas of nodal probabilistic production cost simulation, outage cost assessment and reliability evaluation etc. at load points. The characteristics and effectiveness of this new model are illustrated by a case study of a test system.

  • Structures with a long span have a higher possibility of experiencing excessive vibration induced by human activities such as walking, running, jumping and dancing. These excessive vibration give occupants annoyance. The general method for the vibration analysis of structures subjected to walking loads is to apply a series of nodal loads with assigned time delays at the nodes. But this method has a limit in representing the walking loads. In this study, the equivalent nodal loads are introduced for an effective analysis of floor vibration induced by walking loads. And, walking loads with difference walking rate are measured and applied to the analytical model for numerical analysis.

  • A new general high order consistent nodal method for solving the 3-D multigroup neutron kinetic equations in (x-y-z) geometry has been derived by expending the flux in a multiple polynomial series for the space variables by without the quadratic fit approximations of the transverse leakage and for the time variable and using a weighted-integral technique. The derived equation set is consistent mathematically, and therefore, we can expect very accurate solutions and less computing time since we can use coarse meshes in time variable as well as in spatial variables and the solution would converge exactly in fine mesh limit.

  • This paper proposes a method for choosing the best transmission system expansion plan using nodal/bus delivery marginal rate criterion ($BMR_k$) defined newly in this paper. The objective method minimizes a total cost which is an investment budget for constructing new transmission lines subject to the $BMR_k$ which means a nodal deterministic reliability level requirement at specified load point. The proposed method models the transmission system expansion problem as an integer programming problem. It solves for the optimal strategy using a branch and bound method that utilizes a network flow approach and the maximum flow-minimum cut set theorem. Test results on an existing 21-bus system are included in the paper. It demonstrated the suitability of the proposed method for solving the transmission system expansion planning problem in competitive electricity market environment.

  • The backward differentiation formula (BDF) method is applied to a three-dimensional reactor kinetics calculation for efficient yet accurate transient analysis with adaptive time step control. The coarse mesh finite difference (CMFD) formulation is used for an efficient implementation of the BDF method that does not require excessive memory to store old information from previous time steps. An iterative scheme to update the nodal coupling coefficients through higher order local nodal solutions is established in order to make it possible to store only node average fluxes of the previous five time points. An adaptive time step control method is derived using two order solutions, the fifth and the fourth order BDF solutions, which provide an estimate of the solution error at the current time point. The performance of the BDF- and CMFD-based spatial kinetics calculation and the adaptive time step control scheme is examined with the NEACRP control rod ejection and rod withdrawal benchmark problems. The accuracy is first assessed by comparing the BDF-based results with those of the Crank-Nicholson method with an exponential transform. The effectiveness of the adaptive time step control is then assessed in terms of the possible computing time reduction in producing sufficiently accurate solutions that meet the desired solution fidelity.
