A novel, 6-node, two-dimensional mixed finite element (FE) model has been developed to analyze laminated composite beams by using the minimum potential energy principle. The model has been formulated by considering four degrees of freedom (two displacement components u, w and two transverse stress components ${\sigma}_z$, $\tau_{xz}$) per node. The transverse stress components have been invoked as nodal degrees of freedom by using the fundamental elasticity equations. Thus, the present mixed finite element model not only ensures the continuity of transverse stress and displacement fields through the thickness of the laminated beams but also maintains the fundamental elasticity relationship between the components of stress, strain and displacement fields throughout the elastic continuum. This is an important feature of the present formulation, which has not been observed in various mixed formulations available in the literature. Results obtained from the model have been shown to be in excellent agreement with the elasticity solutions for thin as well as thick laminated composite beams. A few results for a cross-ply beam under fixed support conditions are also presented.
Steel box girders are popular to the Practicing engineers for the its large Pure torsional constant. But closed box girders at-e susceptible to the eccentric loading due to the distortion of the cross section. Distorton of the box girder develops the warping normal stress and transverse flexural stress in the cross section and their magnitudes can be large unless internal diaphragms are installed sufficiently. In this study, stiffness matrix and equivalent nodal force vector are formulated on the basis of displacement method. Shape functions are directly derived from the homogeneous solution of the governing differential equation of the distortion. New finite element formulations were coded into a computer program. Several numerical examples were presented to show the validity of developed program.
Composite materials have varios complicated characteristics to the ply materials, ply orientations, ply stacking sequences and boundary conditions. Therefore, it is difficult to analysis composite materials. For efficient use of composite materials in engineering applications the dynamic behavior, that is, natural frequencies, nodal patterns should be informed. This study presents the experimental and FEM results for the free vibration of symmetrically and antisymmetrically laminated composite and hybrid composite rectangular plates. In order to demonstrate the validity of the experiment, FEM analysis using ANSYS was performed and natural frequencies experimentally obtined is compared with that calculated by FEM analysis. The results obtained from both experiment and FEM analysis show a good agreement.
The T-stress of cracks in elastic sheets is solved by using the fractal finite element method (FFEM). The FFEM, which had been developed to determine the stress intensity factors of cracks, is re-applied to evaluate the T-stress which is one of the important fracture parameters. The FFEM combines an exterior finite element model with a localized inner model near the crack tip. The mesh geometry of the latter is self-similar in radial layers around the tip. The higher order Williams series is used to condense the large numbers of nodal displacements at the inner model near the crack tip to a small set of unknown coefficients. Numerical examples revealed that the present approach is simple and accurate for calculating the T-stresses and the stress intensity factors. Some errors of the T-stress solutions shown in the previous literature are identified and the new solutions for the T-stress calculations are presented.
A direct and relatively simple method for controlling nodal displacements and/or internal bar forces has been developed for prestressable structural assemblies including complex elements ("macro-elements", e.g., the pantographic element), involving Matrix Condensation, in which structural matrices being built up from matrices of elementary elements. The method is aimed at static shape control of geometrically sensitive structures. The paper discusses identification of the most effective bars for actuation, without incurring violation in bar forces, and also with objective of minimal number of actuators or minimum actuation. The advantages of the method is that the changes for both force and displacement regimes are within a single formulation. The method can also be used for adjustment of bar forces to either reduce instances of high forces or increase low forces (e.g., in a cable nearing slack).

Accurate lymph node staging of lung cancer is crucial in determining optimal treatment plans and predicting patient outcome. Currently used lymph node maps have been reconciled to the internationally accepted International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) map published in the seventh edition of TNM classification system of malignant tumours. This article provides computed tomographic illustrations of the IASLC nodal map, to facilitate its application in day-to-day clinical practice in order to increase the appropriate classification in lung cancer staging.

Neurofibromas are benign tumors that originate from the peripheral nerves, including neurites and fibroblasts. Generally, a solitary neurofibroma is located in the skin and rarely in other places. A 72-year-old female suffered from epigastric discomfort for 2 months. Endoscopic findings showed an early gastric cancer type IIc at the antrum. Abdominal computed tomography revealed early gastric cancer with a 1.6 cm-sized metastatic node posterior to the duodenum. Laparoscopic assisted distal gastrectomy and retro-pancreatic dissection were performed uneventfully. Histological examination revealed gastric adenocarcinoma, invading the mucosa without nodal metastasis, and a neurofibroma. Herein, we present a case of a gastric cancer patient with a solitary retroperitoneal neurofibroma which mimicked a distant metastatic node.
Various hybrid dampers have been developed as increasing tall buildings in Korea. To minimize the installment space and cost, the new hybrid friction damper was developed using friction components. It is composed of two one-nodal rotary frictional components and a slotted bolted frictional connection. Because of these components, hybrid friction damper can be activated by building movements due to lateral forces such as a wind and earthquake. In this paper, displacement amplitude dependency tests were carried out to evaluate on the structural performance and the multi-slip mechanism of the hybrid damper. Test results show that the multi-slip mechanism is verified and friction coefficients are increasing as displacement amplitudes are increasing.

A novel 3D shape optimization algorithm is presented for electromagnetic devices carry-ing eddy current. The algorithm integrates the 3D finite element performance analysis and the steepest descent method with design sensitivity and mesh relocation method. For the design sensitivity formula, the adjoint variable vector is defined in complex form based on the 3D finite element method for eddy current problems. A new 3D mesh relocation method is also proposed using the deformation theory of the elastic body under stress to renew the mesh as the shape changes. The design sensitivity f3r the sur-face nodal points is also systematically converted into that for the design variables for the parameterized optimization application. The proposed algorithm is applied to the optimum design of the tank shield model of the transformer and the effectiveness is proved.
