  • Objectives : Nocturnal enuresis is one of common disorders in children. However, there are not a lot of researches going on about this disease, and also standardized criteria for analyzing were insufficient in Korea. Therefore, clinical researches were not in the confidence level. Methods : Korean journals which were published in 1990 to 2006, and online journals about nocturnal enuresis were used for analyzing based on outcome criteria. Results : The International Children's Continence Society and the World Health Organization have published outcome criteria about nocturnal enuresis, but different, often idiosyncratic, outcome criteria and/or definitions have been adopted in published research on treatment for nocturnal enuresis in recent years. But a new set of criteria suggested by Butler, Robinson, and et. al. referred to as a "dryness scale", which focuses on the percentage of dry nights accomplished at a point in time, will be an alternative proposal. These criteria will be of help to make standardized and proper outcome criteria in oriental medical studies. Conclusions : Agreed standardized outcome criteria in nocturnal enuresis treatment is needed.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the case of nocturnal enuresis in two children treated by using hypothesis that awareness during sleep may improves symptoms. Methods Enuresis children usually are not even aware of nocturnal urea due to excessive sleep. During the sleep cycle, enuresis children do not tend to have sleep-wake transition period compared to normal children. Ephedrine, the main ingredient of Ephedra sinica (麻黃), has a wakening effect. Two pediatric patients, who were suffering from nocturnal enuresis, were administered by Tosatang-gamibang (菟絲湯加味方) added Ephedra sinica (麻黃) or Boatang-gamibang (補兒湯加味方) added Ephedra sinica (麻黃) while correcting unhealthy voiding habit. Results As a result of the treatment, two pediatric patients were recovered without relapse. Conclusions In this report, we have proven that Tosatang-gamibang (菟絲湯加味方) added Ephedra sinica (麻黃) or Boatang-gamibang (補兒湯加味方) added Ephedra sinica (麻黃) and correcting voiding habit can considerably be effective in recovering nocturnal enuresis.

  • Bedwetting is a common symptom with many cause. Noctural enuresis is the most frequent cause of bedwetting and is recognized by the absence of other urinary symptoms or sign of disease. The author treated nocturnal enuresis in children who visited Nocturnal Enuresis Clinic in KOMC(Kyunghee Orientla Medical Center, Seoul, Korea) by Radix Ephedrae. The result were obtained as follows: 1. The grade of nocturnal enuresis in children treated by Radix Ephedrae was significantly decreased. (p<0.01) 2. There is no significant correlation between the effect of Radix Ephedrae and the age of children. 3. There is no significant correlation between the effect of Radix Ephedrae and the initial grade of nocturnal enuresis. According to above result, Radix Ephedrae is considered to be efficacious against nocturnal enuresis in children.

  • Background and Objectives: Nocturnal enuresis is a common problem that can be troubling for children and their families. Treatment options include nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic measures. Various nonpharmacologic treatments have been shown to have a positive effect on bed-wetting in small studies but have not been extensively evaluated (generally weak strength of evidence). This study was undertaken to determine if there is any evidence for the clinical efficacy of acupuncture for treatment of nocturnal enuresis. Methods : Author conducted a computerized literature search in following database: Medline(via Pubmed), NDSL. There were no restrictions on the language of publication. The data were extracted in a standardized, predefined manner and assessed critically. Results : 4 article was selected. Acupuncture is composed of general acupuncture, electro, laser. Acupuncture treatment of the children had significantly more dry night than before treatment Conclusion : Alternative, nonpharmacological approach using acupuncture works in children with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis.

  • Objectives : In evaluating a child with enuresis, an organized approach to the history leads to a working diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan. but, there's no study about history taking in enuretic children. This article was undertaken to evaluate the enuretic child exactly and to study nocturnal enuresis systematically. Methods : It was conducted a computerized literature search in following database: Medline (via Pubmed), NDSL, EBSCO. Korean articles via oriental pediatric association homepage, KISS. Key words to search were 'nocturnal enuresis', 'bedwetting', 'enuresis', 'incontinence', 'management', 'evaluation', 'assessment', 'questionnaire', 'guideline', 'voiding dysfunction'. Results : Questions are grouped in eight categories: primary history(sex, age, height, weight), family history, enuresis history(primary/secondary, frequency, time of enuresis, nocturia), voiding history(average number, frequency, pattern, volume, posture, daytime enuresis), medical history, constipation/encopresis, sleep(OSA). Conclusion : A careful, complete history taking will help to plan treatment properly and to study.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine the developmental and clinical characteristics associated with nocturnal enuresis in Korean children. Methods : Three hundred eighteen children with nocturnal enuresis, together with their parents, completed a parent questionnaire consisting of a Child Behavior Checklist(CBCL). Data related to the prenatal, perinatal and developmental history, past and current medical history were collected. Ninety-three normal students were selected as the control group. Results : The nocturnal enuresis group attained diurnal and nocturnal urinary control significantly later than those in the normal control group.49.2% of the children with nocturnal enuresis had the family history of nocturnal enuresis. Daytime incontinence was present in 41.3% of the nocturnal enuresis group. The percentages of sleep-related disturbances were significantly higher in the nocturnal enuresis group when compared to the normal control group.42.6% of the children with nocturnal enuresis experienced pharmacotherapy, and 0.4% experienced enuresis alarms. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that children with nocturnal enuresis in Korea have a high genetic load and a possibility of developmental delay, which supports the neurodevelopmental point of view with regard to the etiology of nocturnal enuresis. The physicians in Korea prefer pharmacological interventions to alarm interventions in treating Korean children with nocturnal enuresis.

  • Enuresis nocturia is more prevalent in children than in adults. Using polysomnography (PSG), we investigated the causes of adult enuresis nocturia in a 20-year-old female patient with nighttime bedwetting. In spite of normal urological examinations, her detailed medical history disclosed frequent sleep paralysis and urination during dreams. During PSG, two electromyograms were attached to her anus to assess the tone of her bladder's sphincter while she slept. During REM sleep, the EMG tone of the mandible decreased, but the anal and bladder sphincter tones did not. The polysomnogram revealed moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Consequently, she was diagnosed with adult parasomnia (nocturnal enuresis) overlap syndrome with OSA. This study demonstrates the value of PSG with simultaneous anal tone EMG for diagnosing NREM parasomnia and nocturnal enuresis.

  • Purpose: To compare the effects of intra-anal biofeedback (BF) and intra-anal electrical stimulation (ES) on pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) activity, nocturnal bladder capacity, and frequency of wet night episodes in children with refractory primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE). Methods: Ninety children of both sexes aged 8-12 years with refractory PMNE participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to 3 groups of equal number: control group (CON) that underwent behavioral therapy and PFM training, and 2 study groups (BF and ES) that underwent the same program in addition to intra-anal BF training and intra-anal ES, respectively. PFMs activity was assessed using electromyography, nocturnal bladder capacity was evaluated by measuring the first morning voided volume, and a nocturnal enuresis diary was used for documenting wet night episodes before treatment and after 3 months of treatment. Results: After training, all groups showed statistically significant improvements in all measured outcomes compared to their pretreatment findings. The ES group showed significantly greater improvements in all measured outcomes than the CON and BF groups. Conclusions: Both intra-anal BF training and ES combined with behavioral therapy and PFMs training were effective in the treatment of PMNE, with intra-anal ES being superior to BF training.
