In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs to optimize their DC and RF characteristics by using a two-dimensional device simulator. First, we analyzed the variation of the DC characteristics with respect to the variation of 2DEG concentrations when varying the Al mole fraction and the thickness of the AlGaN layer. Then, we examined the variation of the RF characteristics by varying the size and the location of the gate, source and drain electrodes. When the Al mole fraction increased from 0.2 to 0.45, both the transconductance and I-V characteristics increased. On the other hand, the I-V characteristics were improved but transconductance was decreased as the thickness of the AlGaN layer increased from 10nm to 50nm. In the RF characteristics, the gate length was found to be the most influential parameter, and the RF characteristics were improved when the gate length was shorten.
Cr:A12O3 and Ti:A12O3 single crystals were grown by Czochralski method, and the effects of crystal growth parameters such as pulling rate, rotation rate, dopant and growth atmosphere on crystal quality were investigated. And spectroscopic properties including lasing efficiency were also measured. Single crystals, sized of 20mm in diameter and 100-135mm in length, were successfully grown from the seed of <001> direction. With the doping level of 0.5w/o Cr2O3, pulling rate 2.0mm/hr, rotation rate of 30rpm and inert atmosphere by nitrogen gas, high quality crystals of Cr:A12O3 were grown. While in case of Ti:A12O3 crystals, high quality crystals were grown under the conditions of the doping level of 0.25w/o TiO2, pulling rate of 1.5mm/hr, rotation rate of 30rpm and reducing atmosphere by hydrogen - nitrogen mixed gas. It was confirmed that Cr3+ ion which maintains its ionoc valence during growth easily de-bubbled than Ti4+ ion which changes its valence, Fe3+ ion also has do-bubbling effect to Ti:A12O3 crystal and the reducing atmosphere by 90% N2 - 10% H2 mixed gas gave effective result on the changing of Ti4+ to Ti3+ and de-bubbling. As a result of spectroscopic measurements of Cr:A12O3 crystal, 4A2 →4F2 and 4F1 absorption transitions and E →4A2(R1) and 2A →4A2(R2) fluorenscence transitions were confirmed. And it was measured that wavelengths of laser R1 and R2 transitions were 696±5nm and 692±5nm respectively, line width of these transitions were 12A, and life-time of fluorenscence was 152μsec. In case of Ti:A12O3 crystals, it was confirmed that absortion transition of 4T2→4E and fluorescence transition of 4E→4T2 with wide range of 650-1050nm was occured. And 147μsec of life-time of fluorescence, 125.4 of figure of merit and 9% of laser efficience were also measured.
The new collimation testing technique of a white light beam using vernier Moire fringes of two line or circular gratings with different pitches is presented. We can visually measure the defocusing ($\Deltaf$), the divergence angle ($\theta$), and the longitudinal chromatic aberration $(L_{ch})$ of a collimating lens by using the technique. For example, we obtained $\Deltaf$= 21.9 mm and $\theta=0.0038^{\circ}$ for a testing lens with the focallengthf = 120.0 mm and F-number of F/2.4. The longitudinal chromatic aberration $L_{ch}$ of another testing lens withf = 65.0 mm, F/1.6, and the Abbe number V = 64.1 for the incident wavelengths of $\lambda_1=480 nm and \lambda_2=640 nm$ is easily measured by same technique. It is found that the measured value $L_{ch}=1.59mm(\pm0.01mm)$ is well agreed with $L_{ch}=1.58mm(\pm0.01mm)$ obtained by the autofocus method.
Cellulose nanowhisker (CNW) isolated from hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HW-BKP) using sulfuric acid hydrolysis was suspended in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and electrospun into composites nanofibers. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the CNW to be rod-like, approximately of $16.1{\pm}4.6$ nm wide and $194{\pm}61$ nm long, providing an aspect ratio of about 12, with a particle size distribution range of $662.2{\pm}301.2$ nm. Uniform and high quality CNW/PVA composite nanofibers were successfully manufactured by the electrospinning method. As the CNW loading increases, the viscosity of CNW/PVA solutions shows a minimum at 1% CNW level which subsequently results in the smallest diameter (193 nm) of electrospun nanofibers. The average diameter of the nanofibers increased up to 284 nm with increasing CNW loading. These results suggest that the electrospinning method provides a great potential of manufacturing consistent and reliable nanofibers from CNW/PVA solution for the formation of scaffolds with potentials in future application.
The magnetic properties of sputtered ($Ni_{83}Fe_{17}/Au/Co/Au$) multilayers with various thicknesses of Au (0.5 {\leq}t_{Au}{\leq} 3 nm), Ni-Fe ($1{\leq}t_{Ni-Fe}{\leq}4nm$) and Co ($0.2{\leq}t_{co}{\leq}1.5nm$) layers were characterized. An alternating in-plane and out-of-plane anisotropy of the ferromagnetic layers was achieved for the structures ($t_{Au}{\geq}1.5nm$) showing a weak coupling between the Ni-Fe layers with an in-plane anisotropy and the Co layers ($0.3{\leq}t_Co{\leq}1.2nm$) with a perpendicular anisotropy. For such a structure, a detailed discussion on the GMR effect is presented, relating to the magnetization reversal from a mutually perpendicular magnetic configuration at the remanence to a parallel one at the saturation. An influence of the dense labyrinth domain structure on the magnetoresistance effect is also addressed.

In this paper, we introduced a LIF measurement method and summarized the theoretical side. When an altered wavelength of laser and electric power, lamp applied electric power, we measured the relative density of the metastable state in mercury after observing a laser induced fluorescence signal of 404.8nm and 546.2nm, and confirmed the horizontal distribution of plasma density in the discharge lamp. The results confirmed the resonance phenomenon regarding the energy level of atoms along a wavelength change, and also confirmed that the largest fluorescent signal in 436nm, and that the density of atoms in 546.2nm ($6^3S_1\rightarrow6^3P_2$) were larger than 404.8nm ($6^3S_1\rightarrow6^3P_1$). According to the increase of lamp applied electric power, plasma density increased, too. When increased with laser electric power, the L1F signal reached a saturation state in more than 2.6mJ. When partial plasma density distribution along a horizontal axis was measured using the laser induced fluorescence method, the density decreased by recombination away from the center.

MnO2 can be potentially utilized as an electrode material for redox capacitors. The deposition of MnO2 with poor electrical conductivity onto porous carbons supplies them with additional conductive paths; as a result, the capacitance of the electrical double layer formed on the porous carbon surface can be utilized together with the redox capacitance of MnO2. However, the obtained composites are not generally suitable for industrial production because they require the use of expensive porous carbons and/or inefficient fabrication methods. Thus, to develop an effective preparation procedure of the composite, a suitable structure of porous carbons must be determined. In this study, MnO2/C composites have been prepared from activated carbon gels with various pore sizes, and their electrical properties are investigated via cyclic voltammetry. In particular, mesoporous carbons with a pore size of around 20 nm form a composite with a relatively low capacitance (98 F/g-composite) and poor rate performance despite the moderate redox capacitance obtained for MnO2 (313 F/g-MnO2). On the other hand, using macro-porous carbons with a pore size of around 60 nm increases the MnO2 redox capacitance (399 F/g-MnO2) as well as the capacitance and rate performance of the entire material (203 F/g-composite). The obtained results can be used in the industrial manufacturing of MnO2/C composites for supercapacitor electrodes from the commercially available porous carbons.
Efficient organic white light-emitting diodes are fabricated by doping [bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinolato) (tripheny-siloxy)aluminium (III)] (SAlq), a blue-emitting layer, with a red fluorescent dye of 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-{2-(2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-benzo[i,j]quinolizin-8-yl)vinyl}-4H-pyran (DCM2). The incomplete energy transfer from blue-emitting SAlq to red-emitting DCM2 enables to obtain a balanced white light-emission. A device with the structure of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/SAlq:DCM2 (30 nm, 0.5 %)/$Alq_3$ (20 nm)/LiF (0.5 nm)/AI shows emission peaks at 456 nm and 482 nm from SAlq and at 570 nm from DCM2. The white light-emitting device shows an external quantum efficiency of about 2.3 %, a luminous efficiency of about 2.4 lm/W, and the CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.32, 0.37) at 100 cd/m^2. A maximum luminance of about 23,800 cd/m^2. is obtained at 15 V and the current density of 782 mA/cm^2.

A 100-nm gate-length metamorphic high electron mobility transistor(mHEMT) with a T-shaped gate was fabricated using a two-step gate recess and characterized for DC and microwave performance. The mHEMT device exhibited DC output characteristics having drain current($I_{dss}$), an extrinsic transconductance($g_m$) of 1,090 mS/mm and a threshold voltage($V_{th}$) of -0.65 V. The $f_T$ and $f_{max}$ obtained for the 100-nm mHEMT device were 190 and 260 GHz, respectively. The developed mHEMT will be applied in fabricating W-band monolithic microwave integrated circuits(MMICs).

Top-emission device has a merit of high aperture ratio and narrow emission spectrum compared to that of bottom-emission one. Emission spectra of top-emission organic light-emitting diodes depending on a layer thickness and view angle were analyzed using a theory of microcavity. Device structure was manufactured to be Al (100 nm)/TPD/$Alq_3$/LiF (0.5 nm)/Al (2 nm)/Ag (30 nm). N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'- di (m-tolyl)-benzidine (TPD) and tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminium (Alq3) were used as a hole-transport layer and emission layer, respectively. And a thickness of TPD and Alq3 layer was varied in a range of 40 nm~70 nm and 60 nm~110 nm, respectively. Angle-dependent emission spectrum out of the device was measured with a device fixed on a rotating plate. Since the top-emission device has a property of microcavity, it was observed that the emission spectrum shift to a longer wavelength region as the organic layer thickness increases, and to a shorter wavelength region as the view angle increases. Layer thickness and view-angle dependent emission spectra of the device were analyzed in terms of microcavity theory. A reflectivity of semitransparent cathode and optical path length were deduced.
