  • The objective of the present study was to examine whether yaks possess any adaptive mechanisms of nitrogen (N) metabolism to survive in the harsh foraging environment of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. A grazing experiment on native alpine meadows was conducted to determine availability of herbage biomass and body weight (BW) change of yaks over the year, followed by two indoor feeding trials to investigate adaptation mechanisms of N metabolism in yaks fed at similar intake level to grazing conditions. Three castrated males of each of three genotypes; yak (Bos grunniens), indigenous cattle (Bos taurus) and their crossbred - cattleyak (Bos taurus male${\times}$Bos grunniens female), were used in the housed trials. Results showed that: i) Monthly herbage biomass production and daily grazing intakes by yaks over the year ranged from 220 to 4,664 kg DM per ha, and 1.90 to 8.50 kg DM, respectively. For about seven months each year, yaks suffer from malnutrition as a result of inadequate pasture conditions; ii) Urinary N excretion and N retention by yaks were significantly affected by feeding level, and yaks had a lower (p<0.05) average daily urinary N excretion (0.39 g/kg $BW^{0.75}$) and a greater (p<0.05) N retention (-0.09 g/kg $BW^{0.75}$) than indigenous cattle (0.47 and -0.16 g/kg $BW^{0.75}$, respectively). Fasting daily urinary N excretion was greater (p<0.05) for indigenous cattle than yaks (353 vs. 248 mg/kg $BW^{0.75}$). Purine derivative N excretion and purine derivative N index (PNI) increased with increasing feeding level, while the value of PNI was greater (p<0.05) for yaks and cattleyak (0.11 and 0.12, respectively) than for indigenous cattle (0.09) during the feeding trials. These results suggest that yaks could rely, in part, on the recycling of N to adapt to the harsh forage environment on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.), were used in the housed trials. • Organic fertilization (OF) was an effective management strategy to improve crop yield and soil fertility. Determination of optimum application rate has been received great interest as a major research field. In this study, we evaluated optimum application level of three different organic fertilizers; mixed expeller compost (MEC), mixed organic fertilizer (MOF) and organic complex fertilizer (OCF), for garlic cultivation. Treatments consisted of MEC, MOF, OCF (50, 100, 150% of standard nitrogen input), inorganic fertilizer(NPK, N-P2O5-K2O : 250-78-128 kg ha-1) and no-fertilization (control). Overall, the yields of garlic under MEC, MOF and OCF 100% (5,337, 5,617 and 5,276 kg ha-1) were higher than under control (4,496 kg ha-1). The 100% of three OFs treatements showed the highest yield and bulb diameter, similar with NPK, while leaf length and bulb height were not significantly different among all treatments. The 150% of three OFs rather decreased yield. The highest nitrogen use efficiency (38.4 and 38.0%) was observed in MOF 100% and OCF100%, which was the most similar with that in NPK (38.8%). As OF application rate increased, pH was decreased, but soil NO3-N and NH4-N were increased. There was no significant difference in soil organic matter (OM), av. P2O5 and Ex. cation values. From these results, 100% application of OFs could be recommended as a suitable input level for garlic cultivation, regardless of organic fertilizer types. Further study might be required to evaluate long-term OF application effect on soil health and crop productivity.

  • According to the statistics of the Ministry of Environment, the emission of sewage sludge is increased by 7~9% yearly. In the future, it will be increased continuously because of extension of sewage disposal plants, high class treatment for removing nitrogen and phosphorus. Until now, we have depended on reclamation for lots of quantity and some part has been treated by ocean emission. But, direct reclamation of organic waste will be prohibited and even ocean emission will be prohibited now, so the treatment of sludge is put on emergency alert. Bio-gas can be produced by applying anaerobic digestion method for the recycling or refuse derived fuel can be conducted by applying carbonization method. However, the process is difficult, causes bad smell and makes it the second waste, so it cannot be practical method in fact. This study applied a fluidized bed combustor for sewage sludge treatment technologies that can actually take advantage of key technologies in order to verify its purpose is to demonstrate selected. If applying the fluidized bed combustor, it can be easily utilized as the replaced resource of energy(fuel) in the countries whose energy resources are insufficient, like our country. Especially, if applying only original strengths of the fluidized bed combustor sufficiently, the sewage sludge can be treated simply, eco-friendly, sanitarily and economically. Particularly, it is verified as the energy technology suitable for government's green growth policy.

  • Newly, nutrients recovery by bioconversion in the swine waste which caused serious problems due to its high organic fraction and content of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen is viewed as a considerable approach since it produces valuable product as well as recycling of resources. Consequently, it is necessary to find new methods to treat swine waste. One possible solution to this problem is to use this potential pollutant as a growth substrate for economically valuable products. The study for the fundamental improvement of bioconversion efficiency by finding optimum growth conditions using statistical models and biotechnology was performed. A novel approach to utilize swine waste by cultivating mycelia of the mushroom Phellinus linteus are described. A central composite face-centered design (CCF) for the experiments was used to develop empirical model providing a quantitative interpretation of the relationships among the three variables, which were substrate concentration, pH, and temperature. The maximal radial extension rate (2.78mm/d) of P.linteus was determined under the condition of 5.0 g COD/L, pH 5.0, and temperature $29.7^{\circ}C$. The results of this study suggest that swine waste could be utilized as a growth substrate for the cultivation of mushroom mycelia enhancing an efficiency of utilizing this by-product of the livestock industry.

  • In the present study, the possibility of recovering and recycling the silicon carbide(SiC) from a silicon sludge by removing Fe and Si impurities was investigated. Si and SiC were separated from the silicon sludge using centrifugation. The separated SiC concentrate consisted of Fe, Si and SiC, in which Fe and Si were removed to recover the pure SiC. Leaching with acid/alkali solution was compared with the vapor-phase chlorination. The Fe concentration removed in the SiC was 49 ppm, and it was separated by leaching with 1 M HCl solution at $80^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The Si concentration removed in the SiC was 860 ppm, and it was separated by leaching with 1M NaOH solution at $50^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The SiC concentrate was chlorinated in a tubular reactor, 2.4 cm in diameter and 32 cm in length. The boat filled with SiC concentrate was located at the midpoint of the alumina tube, then, the chlorine and nitrogen gas mixture was introduced. The Fe and Si concentration removed in the SiC were 48 ppm and 405 ppm, respectively, at $500^{\circ}C$ reactor temperature, 4 h reaction time, 300 cc/min gas flow rate, and 10% $Cl_2$ gas mole fraction.

  • Most electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) treatment processes to recover zinc from EAFD employ carbon as a reducing agent for the zinc oxide in the EAFD. In the present work, the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon in the present of iron oxide was kinetically studied. The experiments were carried out at temperatures between 1173 K and 1373 K under nitrogen atmosphere using a weight-loss technique. From the experimental results, it was concluded that adding the proper amount of iron oxide to the reactant accelerates the reaction rate of zinc oxide with carbon. This is because iron oxide in the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon promotes the carbon gasification reaction. The spherical shrinking core model for a surface chemical reaction control was found to be useful in describing kinetics of the reaction over the entire temperature range. The reaction has an activation energy of 53 kcal/mol (224 kJ/mol) for ZnO-C reaction system, an activation energy of 42 kcal/mol (175 kJ/mol) for $ZnO-Fe_{2}O_{3}-C$ reaction system, and an activation energy of 44 kcal/mol (184 kJ/mol) for ZnO-mill scale-C reaction system.

  • Used disposable diapers have been considered for a long time as a type of waste difficult to recycle and valorize due to their composite nature including plastic, cellulose pulp, a super absorbent polymer and either urine, feces or both. Therefore, the fate of disposed diapers often is either incineration or landfill burial which both have various adverse environmental impacts. However, used disposable diapers contain nutrients: cellulose is an organic matter while urine and feces contain non negligible amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are primary nutrients included in most chemical fertilizers used in agriculture. In a scope of waste recycling and valorization, this study focuses on developing a method to achieve nutrient solution extraction from used disposable diapers. The experiment essentially consists in shredding the diapers and letting them macerate in solutions of sodium hydroxide with various concentrations to allow breaking down of the cellulose and super absorbent polymer and release of urine and feces before sterilizing the solutions in an autoclave to remove potential coliform bacteria. At the end of the experiment, a set of parameters is measured for the final solution to identify concentrations of nutrients as well as presence or absence of harmful substances. Results are discussed and directions for future studies are suggested, which include mechanization of the diapers shredding process or added aeration to enhance nitrification and absorption of extracted nutrients from plants.

  • Modern society has moved from a phosphorus recycling loop, where animal manure and human wastes were spread on farming land to recycle nutrients, to a once-through system, where phosphates are extracted from mined, non-renewable phosphate rock and end up either in landfill(sewage sludge, incinerator ash) or in surface waters. In this research, crystallization of nitrogen and phosphate with natural sources of $Mg^{2+}$ in synthetic water was tested. The operational parameters of pH, mixing time, and the magnesium molar ratio were investigated to find optimal conditions of the MAP precipitation using synthetic wastewater. The removal efficiency of phosphate increased with pH up to 11. By MAP precipitaiton of the synthetic waste water, 94% of the phosphate were eliminated at pH 11. It was found that at least 10 minutes mixing time was required and 20 minutes mixing time was recommended for efficient phosphate removal. High efficiency removal of phosphate was possible when the magnesium molar ratio was 1.0~2.0. The comparative study of different magnesium sources showed that coagulants (PAC) was the more efficient sources than only magnesium. The result showed that 97% of phosphate removal. In conclusion, coagulants (PAC) induced crystallization of struvite and hydroxyapatite was shown to be a technically viable process that could prove cost effective for removing phosphate in wastewater.
