Competitive Adsorption and Subsequent Desorption of Sulfate in the Presence of Various Anions in Soils

  • In this experiment we investigated the influence of various anions including oxalic acid encountered as solution phase in soil on the adsorption and desorption of sulfate in Chungwon Bt soil. The effect of chloride and nitrate on the adsorption of sulfate was not significant, suggesting that sulfate was better able to compete for adsorption sites at concentrations studied, in contrast to the large reduction in the amount of chloride adsorbed in the presence of sulfate. The results of competition for sorption sites between sulfate and anion showed that the simultaneous presence of two anions in solution was effective in reduction of competing anion at a maximum value of adsorption, due to the similar adsorption mechanism for anion competition. Therefore, the variation in the buffer power of the acids will produce a change in the strength and amount of adsorption and the competitive ability.

액상환원공정을 이용한 백금 나노 입자의 합성 (Synthesis of Platinum Nanoparticles by Liquid Phase Reduction)

  • In this study, Platinum(Pt) nanoparticles were synthesized by using polyol process which is one of the liquid phase reduction methods. Dihydrogen hexachloroplatinate (IV) hexahydrate $(H_2PtCl_6{\cdot}6H_2O)$, as a precursor, was dissolved in ethylene glycol and silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) was added as metal salt for shape control of Pt particle. Also, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), as capping agent, was added to reduce the size of particle and to separate the particles. The size of Pt nanoparticles was evaluated particle size analyzer (PSA). The size and morphology of Pt nanoparticles were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM). Synthesized Pt nanoparticles were studied with varying time and temperature of polyol process. Pt nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized with controlled sizes in the range 5-10 and 20-40 nm with cube and multiple-cube shapes.

Electrochemical Behavior of the Reduction of Thin Films of $Ag_3Fe(CN)_6$

  • A thin film of silver ferricyanide (Ag$_3$Fe(CN)$_6$) on a platinum or gold substrates can be reduced electrochemically to the salt of silver ferrocyanide in potassium nitrate solution. The color of these films are orange and these films are shown to be electrochromic. The voltammogram is shown the asymmetry of the oxidation compared to the reduction wave under various supporting electrolytes. The standard heterogeneous electron-transfer rate for these films and bare Pt electrode were 0.49 ${\times}$ l0$^{-2}$ and 1.30 ${\times}$ l0$^{-2}$ cm/s, respectively, obtained using a rotating disc electrode. Rough D$_0$ values, evaluated from the Levich equation, for Fe(CN)$_6^{3-/4-}$ at both SF thin film and a bare Pt disc electrode were shown as 1.2l ${\times}$ l0-6 and 0.94 ${\times}$ l0$^{-6}$ cm$^2$/s, respectively. The conductivities, as determined from the slops of the i-V curves for a ca. 1 mm sample for dried SF potassium rich and deficient bulk samples pressed between graphite electrodes, were 9.34 ${\times}$ l0$^{-9}$ and 5.80 ${\times}$ l0$^{-9}$ (${\Omega}$${\cdot}$cm)$^{-1}$, respectively.

Release of Ammonia Odor from AAFA (Ammonia Adsorbed Fly Ash) by Installation of NOx Reduction System

  • This paper discussed the effect of ammonia concentration adsorbed on fly ash for the ammonia emission as AAFA (Ammonia Adsorbed Fly Ash) produced from coal fired plants due to operation of NOx reduction technologies was landfilled with distilled or sea water at closed and open systems, respectively. Ammonia bisulfate and sulfates adsorbed on fly ash is highly water soluble. The pH of ammonium bisulfate and sulfate solution had significant effect on ammonia odor emission. The effect of temperature on ammonia odor emission from mixture was less than pH, the rate of ammonia emission increased with increased temperature when the pH conditions were kept at constant. Since AAFA increases the pH of solution substantially, $NH_3$ in the ash can release the ammonia order unless it is present at low concentration. $NH_4{^+}$ ion is unstable in fly ash and water mixtures of high pH at open system, which is changed to nitrite or nitrate and then released as ammonia gas. The proper conditions for < 20 ppm of ammonia concentration released from the AAFAs landfilled in ash pond were explored using an open system with sea water. It was therefore proposed that optimal operation to collect AAFA of less than 168 ppm ammonia at the electrostatic precipitator were controlled to ammonia slip with less than 5 ppm at SCR/SNCR installations, and, ammonia odor released from mixture of fly ash of 168 ppm ammonia with sea water under open system has about 20 ppm.

Nitrogen Uptake and Growth of Soybean Seedlings under Flooding Stress

  • This experiment was carried out on plastic pots ($40cm{\times}25cm{\times}30cm$) filled with sand soil at greenhouse using two soybean cultivars with small seed; one was Pungsannamulkong (PSNK) recognized as a tolerant cultivar against excessive water stress and the other one was Sobaeknamulkong (SBNK) recognized as a susceptible cultivar. Seed was sown with 30 plants of 2 hills, and the amount of applied fertilizer was N; 3.0 g, P; 3.0 g, and K; 3.4 g per $m^2$ with all basal fertilizations. Plants were grown under photoperiod of natural light with day temperature of $31{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ and night temperature of $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The flooding treatment was done for 3, 5, 7 and 10 days by filling pots with tap water up to 1 cm above the level of the soil surface when plants were 2 days after emerging. Nitrogen uptake by leaves of soybeans decreased significantly by the flooding after 6 days. This significant reduction of N uptake by flooding was evidently recognized from the chlorosis of leaves. The dry matter of flooded soybean seedlings significantly decreased compared to non-flooded soybean seedlings at 10 days. The dry matter of roots also showed similar result of the shoot. Shoots had more N reduction than roots under the flooding. This N reduction was more pronounce in SBNK than in PSNK. Chlorophyll content of flooded soybeans showed decreasing or non-increasing tendency, and the reduction of chlorophyll content was more in SBNK than in PSNK from the flooding stress. Nitrate content of soybean seedlings with flooding stress showed decreasing tendency in shoot and root parts. Ammonium content, however, was higher in flooding stress compared to the non-flooding. Flooding caused a remarkable change in the AA (amino acid) composition and TAA (total amino acid) concentration in the leaves of soybean seedlings.

1액형 광촉매를 아스팔트 포장에 적용하기 위한 기초연구 (Fundamental Study on Applying an Integral TiO2 Solution to Asphalt Pavement)

  • PURPOSES : This research was a fundamental study on the application of an integral $TiO_2$ solution to asphalt concrete pavement. The integral $TiO_2$ solution was produced in pilot production equipment; application of the integral $TiO_2$ solution to asphalt pavement was conducted to examine the pollution-reducing capability of photocatalytic compounds such as $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic $TiO_2$ reacted with air pollutants, converting them into small amounts of relatively benign molecules. METHODS : In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted using five various testing methods. Tensile strength ratio (TSR) and British pendulum test (BPT) were conducted in order to evaluate the properties of asphalt pavement subsequent to the integral $TiO_2$ solution coating. In addition, methylene blue testing, a measurement of nitrate on the coated pavement, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction testing were conducted in order to evaluate photocatalytic reaction. Lastly, a UV-A lamp was used as a light source for photocatalytic reactions. RESULTS : Test results indicated no change in the properties of asphalt pavement following the integral $TiO_2$ solution coating. In order to evaluate the performance of asphalt pavement as a function of $TiO_2$, the moisture susceptibility and skid resistance were investigated. The moisture susceptibility and skid resistance satisfied there quirements related to pavement quality and safety specification. Furthermore, the effects of reduction of air pollution were significantly improved as determined via the methylene blue test and NOx reduction test. The $TiO_2$-paved asphalt specimen exhibited approximately 43% reduction of NOx. CONCLUSIONS : This study has suggested that applying $TiO_2$ rarely impacts asphalt pavement performance measures such as moisture susceptibility and skid resistance, and that its application may be a better means of reducing air pollution. Further studies, such as proper $TiO_2$ dosage rates and compatibility with various pavement types, are required to broaden and generalize its application.

NiO 나노 결정의 환원 반응에 의한 Ni 형성 거동에 관한 연구 (A study on the Ni formation by reduction of NiO nano crystals)

  • NiO 나노 결정을 수소 분위기에서 환원시켜 Ni 금속이 형성되는 거동에 대하여 고찰하였다. NiO 나노 결정은 $Ni(NO_3)_2\cdot6H_2O$를 열처리하여 얻었고, 200~500 nm의 입도와 정 팔면체의 형상을 나타내었다. 이 결정은 일반적인 합성조건에서는 잘 형성되지 않는 불안정 상태인 불안정상태인 (111)면이 발달한 결정체였다. 환원은 300과 $600^{\circ}C$에서 15분과 60분간 수행하였다. NiO 결정의 환원은 불안정한 (111)면에서 우선적으로 일어나기 시작하였으며, $300^{\circ}C$ 환원에서는 팔면체 형상을 유지하면서 Ni로 환원되었다. $600^{\circ}C$ 환원에서는 팔면체 결정의 facet 면이 사라지고, 인접한 결정립들 간의 neck가 형성되면서 Ni 상의 입자로 응집되어가는 것을 확인하였다.

보란-염화리튬에 의한 유기화합물의 환원반응 (Effect of Lithium Chloride on the Borane Reduction of Organic Compound)

  • $BH_3$-THF 용액에 염화리튬을 가한 새로운 환원계의 환원특성에 대한 연구가 대표적인 작용기를 가진 유기화합물을 가지고 표준조건($0^{\circ}$, THF)에서 이루어졌다. 조사 연구된 화합물중 벤조페논, 4가지 에스테르 및 시클로헥센은 $BH_3$ 환원과 별 차이를 보이지 않았으나, 2-헵탄온, 아세토페논, 염화벤조일, 프탈산무수물, 그리고 3가지 에폭시화물은 소량의 염화리튬에 의해 빠른 속도로 환원이 완결 되었다. 특히 에폭시화시클로헥센의 환원에 있어서는 소량의 염화리튬 존재하에서는 정량적으로 시클로헥산올을 생성하였으나 염화리튬의 양이 증가하면 2-클로로시클로헥산올이 시클로헥산올과 함께 생성됨을 알았다. 또한, 에폭시화시클로헥센과의 반응에 있어서 질산리튬은 염화리튬과는 달리 별로 효과가 없었다. 따라서 보란-염화리튬용액에 클로로수소화붕소리튬의 생성가능성을 논의하였다.

화학적 환원법으로 제조된 은나노유체를 사용한 직접흡수식 태양열 집열기의 효율 (Efficiency of a Direct Absorption Solar Collector using Ag Nanofluids Synthesized by Chemical Reduction Method)

  • In this paper, the water-based Ag nanofluids are synthesized by the chemical reduction method and their extinction coefficients are measured by an in-house developed measurement device. The Ag nanofluids are manufactured by the chemical reduction method with the mixing of silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) and sodium borohydride ($NaBH_4$) in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The extinction coefficients of Ag nanofluids are measured by means of the in-house developed apparatus at a wavelength of 632.8nm according to the particle volume fractions. The results show that the extinction coefficient of water-based Ag nanofluids increases with the increase of nanoparticle concentrations. Finally, the temperature field and efficiency of direct absorption solar collector (DASC) are analytically estimated based on the measured extinction coefficient of water-based Ag nanofluids. The results indicate that the direct absorption solar collectors using nanofluids have the feasibility to improve the efficiency of conventional flat-plate solar collectors without using an absorber plate.

($CO_2$ 분해시 $LiMn_2O_4$의 상변화 (Phase Transitions of $LiMn_2O_4$ on $CO_2$ Decomposition)

  • $LiMn_2O_4$ catalyst for $CO_2$ decomposition was synthesized by oxidation method for 30 min at 600$^{\circ}C$ in an electric furnace under air condition using manganese(II) nitrate $(Mn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O)$, Lithium nitrate ($LiNO_3$) and Urea $(CO(NH_2)_2)$. The synthesized catalyst was reduced by $H_2$ at various temperatures for 3 hr. The reduction degree of the reduced catalysts were measured using the TGA. And then $CO_2$ decomposition rate was measured using the reduced catalysts. Phase-transitions of the catalysts were observed after $CO_2$ decomposition reaction at an optimal decomposition temperature. As the result of X-ray powder diffraction analysis, the synthesized catalyst was confirmed that the catalyst has the spinel structure, and also confirmed that when it was reduced by $H_2$, the phase of $LiMn_2O_4$ catalyst was transformed into $Li_2MnO_3$ and $Li_{1-2{\delta}}Mn_{2-{\delta}}O_{4-3{\delta}-{\delta}'}$ of tetragonal spinel phase. After $CO_2$ decomposition reaction, it was confirmed that the peak of $LiMn_2O_4$ of spinel phase. The optimal reduction temperature of the catalyst with $H_2$ was confirmed to be 450$^{\circ}C$(maximum weight-increasing ratio 9.47%) in the case of $LiMn_2O_4$ through the TGA analysis. Decomposition rate(%) using the $LiMn_2O_4$ catalyst showed the 67%. The crystal structure of the synthesized $LiMn_2O_4$ observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM) shows cubic form. After reduction, $LiMn_2O_4$ catalyst became condensed each other to form interface. It was confirmed that after $CO_2$ decomposition, crystal structure of $LiMn_2O_4$ catalyst showed that its particle grew up more than that of reduction. Phase-transition by reduction and $CO_2$ decomposition ; $Li_2MnO_3$ and $Li_{1-2{\delta}}Mn_{2-{\delta}}O_{4-3{\delta}-{\delta}'}$ of tetragonal spinel phase at the first time of $CO_2$ decomposition appear like the same as the above contents. Phase-transition at $2{\sim}5$ time ; $Li_2MnO_3$ and $Li_{1-2{\delta}}Mn_{2-{\delta}}O_{4-3{\delta}-{\delta}'}$ of tetragonal spinel phase by reduction and $LiMn_2O_4$ of spinel phase after $CO_2$ decomposition appear like the same as the first time case. The result of the TGA analysis by catalyst reduction ; The first time, weight of reduced catalyst increased by 9.47%, for 2${\sim}$5 times, weight of reduced catalyst increased by average 2.3% But, in any time, there is little difference in the decomposition ratio of $CO_2$. That is to say, at the first time, it showed 67% in $CO_2$ decomposition rate and after 5 times reaction of $CO_2$ decomposition, it showed 67% nearly the same as the first time.
