The microstructure and mechanical properties of the high-strength low-alloy steel weld metals with a variation of nickel content were investigated. The weld metals with a variation of nickel content from 2.3 to 3.3 wt% were prepared using Gas Metal Arc Welding process. The amount of acicular ferrite decreased with increasing nickel content; this is accompanied with an increase in the region of bainite and martensite, hence the hardness and tensile strengths were increased with the increase in nickel content, whereas the impact energy was deteriorated.
The effect of nickel (Ni) on growth and some tolerance strategies with regard to heavy metal tolerance mechanism was investigated in radish (Raphanus sativus) seedlings. The protective effect of histidine on nickel stress conditions was also monitored. The seedling growth decreased with an increase in metal concentrations. The inhibitory effect was more pronounced in the root elongation than in the shoot elongation. Increasing Ni supply showed a progressive increase of Ni concentrations in the roots and shoots. Ni content was higher in the shoots than in the roots. In the presence of nickel, radish exhibited an antioxidative defense mechanism, as evidenced by the elevated malondialdehyde(MDA), showing that nickel is an efficient inducer of lipid peroxidation. Exposure of radish to elevated concentrations of nickel was accompanied by an increase in the proline content. Supplemental histidine in the presence of Ni ameliorated metal-induced growth inhibition and lipid peroxidation. Combinations of Ni and histidine resulted in a significant decline in proline content compared with Ni stress alone, indicating that histidine may provide protection against the adverse effect of Ni stress. From the results it is suggested that histidine is an efficient chelator by complexing metal ion within the plant and may playa role in nickel tolerance implicated in metal detoxification.
Variations of nickel contents and microstructures in molten magnesium alloys on the addition of aluminum, zirconium, and manganese have been investigated. Specimens were prepared by melting under $SF_6$ and $CO_2$ atmosphere and casting into a disc of 29 mm diameter with 7~10 mm thickness from the melt acquired at the top of crucible. Before casting, the molten metal was stirred for 3 minutes after each addition of alloying elements and maintained for 30 minutes for settling down. Results showed that zirconium did not significantly affect the content of nickel while aluminum remarkably reduced it by forming $Al_3Ni_2$ phase. When manganese are added to Mg-1wt%Ni alloy along with aluminum, both elements remarkably reduced the content of nickel. The addition of 1.5 wt% manganese to Mg-1wt%Ni alloy containing aluminum further reduced the content of nickel by more than 30%, during which an additional intermetallic phase $Al_{10}Mn_3Ni$ was precipitated in the molten magnesium.

Electroless plating nickel has superior mechanical property to electroplated nickel. Furthermore nickel can be coated on nonconducting substrate. In this research, electroless plating of nickel were conducted in different bath condition to find optimum conditions of electroless nickel plating for MEMS applications. The selectivity of activation method on several substrates was investigated. The effects of nickel concentration, reducing agent concentration and inhibitor on deposition rate were investigated. The effect of pH on deposition rate and content of phosphorous in deposited nickel was also investigated.
The influence of MWCNTs on fracture toughness properties of MWCNTs/Nickel-Pitch Fibers/epoxy composites (MWCNTs/Ni-PFs/epoxy) was investigated according to MWCNTs content. Nickel-Pitch-based carbon fibers (Ni-PFs) were prepared by electroless nickel-plating. The surface properties of Ni-PFs were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). The fracture toughness of MWCNTs/Ni-PFs/epoxy was assessed by critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and critical strain energy release rate ($G_{IC}$). From the results, it was found that the fracture toughness properties of MWCNTs/Ni-PFs/epoxy were enhanced with increasing MWCNTs content, whereas the value decreased above 5 wt.%. MWCNTs content. This was probably considered that the MWCNTs entangled with each other in epoxy due to an excess of MWCNTs.
A porous nickel-tin nano-dendritic electrode, for use as the anode in a rechargeable lithium battery, has been prepared by using an electrochemical deposition process. The adjustment of the complexing agent content in the deposition bath enabled the nickel-tin alloys to have specific stoichiometries while the amount of acid, as a dynamic template for micro-porous structure, was limited to a certain amount to prevent its undesirable side reaction with the complexing agent. The ratios of nickel to tin in the electro-deposits were nearly identical to the ratios of nickel ion to tin ion in the deposition bath; the particle changed from spherical to dendritic shape according to the tin content in the deposits. The nickel to tin ratio and the dendritic structure were quite uniform throughout the thickness of the deposits. The resulting nickel-tin alloy was reversibly lithiated and delithiated as an anode in rechargeable lithium battery. Furthermore, the resulting anode showed much more stable cycling performance up to 50 cycles, as compared to that resulting from dense electro-deposit with the same atomic composition and from tin electrodeposit with a similar porous structure. From the results, it is expected that highly-porous nickel-tin alloys presented in this work could provide a promising option for the high performance anode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries.

Nickel-iron nanocrystalline alloys with different compositions and grain sizes were fabricated by electro-plating for MEMS devices. The iron content of the deposits was changed by varying the nickel/iron ion ratio in the electrolyte. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was applied for measuring the strength of the texture and grain size of the deposits. The nickel/iron atom ratio of the deposits was analyzed by EDS. The hardness of the alloys was evaluated by Vickers hardness indenter. The internal stress of the deposits was measured by Thin Film Stress Measurement using Stoney's formula. Surface morphology and roughness were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The results of this study revealed that at a grain size of approximately $17\~24$nm the hardness, internal stress and roughness depend strongly on the iron content. With increasing the iron content, the hardness and internal stress of the deposits increased. An excellent correlation between the increase in the internal stress and the loss of (200) texture was found.
Fundamental investigations have been carried out to find the applicability of manganese nodule as an adsorbent of nickel ion with an intention that nickel can be secured in manganese nodule along with the treatment of wastewater. The average content of manganese in nodules which used in the experiments was about 27%. The content of nickel in manganese nodules was observed to increase up to 4 times higher with comparison to its original value after adsorption. When the initial concentration of nickel ion in artificial wastewater was lower than 500 mg/L, its adsorbed amount on manganese nodule was shown to increase continuously. However, no more than about 82 mg/L of nickel was attained at higher initial nickel ion concentration than 500 mg/L. The adsorption of nickel ion was increased with temperature under experimental conditions and as the size of manganese nodule particles became smaller more nickel ion was adsorbed on adsorbent. Regarding the effect of pH, the adsorption of nickel ion was more hindered as the solution became acidic. Adsorption behavior of nickel ion on manganese nodule was found to follow the Freundlich model well and kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption reaction of nickel ion was second order. Thermodynamic parameters for the nickel ion adsorption were estimated on the basis of thermodynamic equations and they were in good agreement with experimental results.

In order to improve the electromagnetic shielding rate of Carbon Fiber (CF), it was produced using the nickel nano-powder impregnating method. Using two types of nickel powder having thicknesses of 50 ㎛ and 100 ㎛, and a thermoplastic elastomer resin, a compound containing 10-20% nickel content was mixed and then manufactured through an extruder. The CF coated with the compound was woven and manufactured using a 1-ply specimen. The final nickel content of the specimen was verified using TGA and the distribution of nickel powder on the CF surface was verified using SEM. The metal shows a high shielding rate in the low-frequency band, but the shielding rate decreases at higher-frequency bands. The CF improves at the higher frequency band, and metals reflect electromagnetic waves while carbon absorbs electromagnetic waves. The study of shielding materials, which are stronger and lighter than metal, by using CF lighter than metal and enabling the shielding rate from low-frequency band to high-frequency band, confirmed that the larger the area coated with nickel nano-powder, the better the electromagnetic shielding performance. In particular, CF coated with a thickness of 100 ㎛ has a shielding rate similar to that of copper and can also be used for EV/HEV automotive cables and other applications in the future.
This study was carried out to investigate the levels of copper, zinc, manganese, nickel, cadmium and mercury content in breast milk among urban, rural and industrial lactating women in Korea. A total of 59 samples, which were collected from 17 in urban, 20 in rural and 22 in industrial area, and from 21-38 years-old healthy lactating women, were analyzed by Rigaku Mercury Analyzer for mercury, and by atomic absorption apectrophotometry for the other metals. The results are summarized as follows : The mean trace metal contents in breast milk were determined to be 0.34$\pm$0.14 ppm for copper, 2.01$\pm$1.43 ppm for zinc, 8.49$\pm$5.11 ppb for manganese, 7.75$\pm$5.73 ppb for nickel, 1.65$\pm$2.42 ppm for cadmium, 34.45$\pm$26.71 ppb for lead and 0.90$\pm$0.68 ppb for mercury. For the trace metal content in breast milk by area, the highest of copper, zinc, cadmium and mercury content were in urban, the highest of manganese content was in industrial, and the highest of nickel and lesd content were in rural. For copper, zinc, manganese and lead content in breast milk by lactation period, the highest levels were found in under 4 weeks after lactating, and subsequently the levels declined as lactation progressed, but the levels of zinc and manganese content increased from over 25 weeks after lactating. For cadmium and mercury content in breast milk by lactation period, the lowest levels were found in under 4 weeks after lactating, the highest levels were found in 5-12 weeks after lactating, and subsequently the levels declined as lactation progressed. For nickel content in breast milk by lactation period, the highest level was in 13-24 weeks after lactating, the lowest level was in 5-12 weeks after lactating.
