Surface roughness changes caused by the galvanic corrosion between a titanium abutment and base metal alloy (티타늄 지대주와 비귀금속 합금사이의 갈바닉 부식에 의한 표면 거칠기 변화 평가)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of electro-chemical corrosion and surface roughness change for the cases of Ti abutment connected to restoration made of base metal alloys. Materials and methods: It was hypothesized that Ni-Cr alloys in different compositions possess different corrosion resistances, and thus the specimens ($13{\times}13{\times}1.5\;mm$) in this study were fabricated with 3 different types of metal alloys, commonly used for metal ceramic restorations. The electrochemical characteristics were evaluated with potentiostat (Parstat 2273A) and the level of surface roughness change was observed with surface roughness tester. Paired t-test was used to compare mean average surface roughness (Ra) changes of each specimen group. Results: All specimens made of nickel-chromium based alloys, average surface roughness was increased significantly (P < .05). Among them, the Ni-Cr-Be alloy ($0.016{\pm}.007\;{\mu}m$) had the largest change of roughness followed by Ni-Cr ($0.012{\pm}.003\;{\mu}m$) and Ni-Cr-Ti ($0.012{\pm}.002\;{\mu}m$) alloy. There was no significant changes in surface roughness between each metal alloys after corrosion. Conclusion: In the case of galvanic couples of Ti in contact with all specimens made of nickel-chromium based alloys, average surface roughness was increased.

  • Effect of nickel powder to added to the hydrogen absorbing alloy electrode of $MmNi_{4.5}-xCoxMn_{0.3}Al_{0.2}$ system alloy was investigated. The addition of nickel powder was effective for the improvement of discharging characteristic. It was found that the discharge capacity was 310mAhig when the alloy negative electrode was mixed $MmNi_{3.75}CO_{0.75}Mn_{0.3}Al_{0.2}$ and nickel powder with a mix of one to three. Still another, we have investigated thermodynamic stability of hydrogen in the alloy negative electrode. As a result, enthalpy of hydrogen and hydrogen equilibrium pressure in the alloy negative electrode were a suitable value to easy hydrogen absorption-desorption.

Effect of Ultrasonic Wave on the Nickel-Zine Alloy Deposition whit the Variation of Ammonium Chloride Concertration (Ni-Zn 함금도금에서 염화암몬 농도에 따른 초음파의 영향)

  • The nickel0zinc allot depositions have been studjen in ammonium chloridw added chloride baths to fine out the effects of ultrasonic irradiation for the electrodeposition processes. The compositions of deposited alloys, the current efficiencies, corrosion resistance and brightness in various conditions of electrodeposition were investigated, in the range of ultrasonic irradiation of 50,500 and 1,000kc/s respectively. The results obtained are as follows; 1. the ratio of nikel to zinc in the deposit increased according 시 the ammonium chloride concentration in irradiated baths. 2. The current efficiencies became also higer in the irradiated bath. 3. Ammonium ions in solution seem to retard formation of zinc hydroxide. 4. The corrsion resistance and brightness of the deposits are dependent upon nickel content of deposits which ranges 10-18%(wt)nickel in the irradiated baths and 11-15%(wt)in ninirradisted baths. 5. The corrosion resistance and brightnes of the deposited are appreciably better in the irradiated baths than in non-irradiated bath with the mole ratio of 3.4(NH+4/Ni+++Zn++).

  • Smelting reduction of spent lithium-ion batteries results in the production of metallic alloys in which reduced cobalt, nickel and copper coexist. In this study, we investigated the leaching of the metallic alloys containing the above three metals together with iron, manganese, and silicon. The mixture of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent was employed, and the effect of the concentration thereof, the reaction time and temperature, and pulp density was investigated to accomplish the complete leaching of cobalt, nickel, and copper. The effect of the hydrogen peroxide concentration and pulp density on the leaching was prominent, compared to that of reaction time and temperature, especially in the range of 20 to 80℃. The complete leaching of the metals present in metallic alloys, except silicon, was accomplished using 2 M HCl and 5% H2O2 with a pulp density of 30 g/L for 150 min at 60℃.

Material composition and change of baekdong alloy in the late Joseon period (조선후기 백동의 재료 구성과 변화)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the historical flow of baekdong alloy's usage according to the alloying materials mentioned in document records. For this purpose, we first overviewed the use of copper as a base material for white copper alloys and other types of copper alloys. Baekdong is an alloy of copper and other metals and is currently defined as an alloy of copper and nickel. However, depending on the research subjects and time of the scholars, baekdong may be defined as a metal with over a certain percentage of tin added to copper, or as an alloy of tin, zinc, and lead with copper. There is disagreement regarding the interpretation of this term. Baekdong, which started to appear in the literature of the Three Kingdoms Period, has been steadily seen through the Goryeo and Chosun Dynasties to the modern period. It has been used in various ways, according to each age and culture, from the symbol of the office to trading goods, daily life goods, and money. In the literature, baekdong's alloying material is not only copper and nickel, which are currently defined as alloys, but it is the same in that copper is used as the base metal of the alloy, although it varies slightly from generation to generation. In addition to copper, tin, zeolite, and emerald, zinc and lead also appeared. It was found that baekdong, which means alloy, and baekdong, which means white metal, were mixed. Nickel, which is the alloy material of baekdong as it is currently defined, is a metal with a relatively high discovery time and is widely used as a material for modern industrial fields. Nickel was introduced into Korea at the end of the Joseon Dynasty, but its use is not known in detail. In this study, we examined the acceptance and use of nickel-based baekdong in articles of modern newspapers and in statistical data. Based on the experience of craftsmen, we estimated the period when nickel-based alloys were used in crafts. Material is a direct factor in the development and deterioration of technology, and the development of technology is the basis for the changing of civilizations and cultures. In this context, this study was to investigate baekdong with the material of alloys as a starting point.

Effect of Aluminum, Manganese, and Zirconium on the Content of Nickel in Molten Magnesium (마그네슘용탕의 니켈 함량에 미치는 알루미늄, 망간 및 지르코늄의 영향)

  • Variations of nickel contents and microstructures in molten magnesium alloys on the addition of aluminum, zirconium, and manganese have been investigated. Specimens were prepared by melting under $SF_6$ and $CO_2$ atmosphere and casting into a disc of 29 mm diameter with 7~10 mm thickness from the melt acquired at the top of crucible. Before casting, the molten metal was stirred for 3 minutes after each addition of alloying elements and maintained for 30 minutes for settling down. Results showed that zirconium did not significantly affect the content of nickel while aluminum remarkably reduced it by forming $Al_3Ni_2$ phase. When manganese are added to Mg-1wt%Ni alloy along with aluminum, both elements remarkably reduced the content of nickel. The addition of 1.5 wt% manganese to Mg-1wt%Ni alloy containing aluminum further reduced the content of nickel by more than 30%, during which an additional intermetallic phase $Al_{10}Mn_3Ni$ was precipitated in the molten magnesium.

Effectiveness of Ni-based and Fe-based cladding alloys in delaying hydrogen generation for small modular reactors with increased accident tolerance

  • This study investigates the high temperature oxidation behaviour of a Ni-20Cr-1.2Si (wt.%) alloy in steam from 1200 ℃ to 1350 ℃ by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The results demonstrate that exposed Ni-based alloy developed a thin oxide scale, consisted mainly of Cr2O3. The oxidation kinetics obtained from the experimental results was applied to evaluate the hydrogen generation considering a simplified reactor core model with different cladding alloys following an unmitigated Loss-Of-Coolant Accident (LOCA) scenario in a hypothetical Small Modular Reactor (SMR). Overall, experimental data and simulations results show that both Fe-based and Ni-based alloys may enhance cladding survivability, delaying its melting, as well as reducing hydrogen generation under accident conditions compared to Zr-based alloys. However, a substantial neutron absorption occurs when Ni-based alloys are used as cladding for current uranium-dioxide fuel systems, even when compared to Fe-based alloys.

  • In order to investigate electrochemical behavior and biocompatibility of Co-Cr dental alloy by electrochemical corrosion test and MTT assay, the xCo-25Cr-yW-zNi alloys were used in this study. Samples of Co-Cr-W-Ni alloys were manufactured using arc melting furnace. The microstructure of the alloys was examined by optical microscopy (OM), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), MTT assay, and corrosion test. Corrosion resistance increased slightly as cobalt (Co) content increased. And bioactivity was concerned with nickel (Ni) and tungsten (W). Biocompatibility of Co-Cr alloy depended on Ni and W contents.

Current Status of Nickel Smelting Technology (니켈 제련기술의 현황)

  • Nickel is widely used due to its excellent toughness, malleability and enhanced corrosion resistance. Therefore, nickel is indispensable in our daily lives, and it is widely used in basic to advanced applications such as stainless steel, super alloys and electronic devices. Recently, nickel has been widely used as the major material in secondary batteries and capacitors. The use of nickel continues to rise and has increased from 800 thousand tonnes per year worldwide in the 1970s to about 2 million tonnes in the 2010s. However, nickel is a representative rare metal and ranks 23rd among the abundant elements in the earth's crust. This study reviews the current status of the nickel smelting processes as well as the trend in production amount and use. Nickel is extracted by a wide variety of smelting methods depending on the type of ore. These smelting methods are essential for the development of new recycling processes that can extract nickel from secondary nickel resources.
