  • Corrosion of nickel-base alloys (Hastelloy C-276, Inconel 625, and Inconel X-750) in $500^{\circ}C$, 25MPa supercritical water (with 10 wppb oxygen) was investigated to evaluate the suitability of these alloys for use in supercritical water reactors. Oxide scales formed on the samples were characterized by gravimetry, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that, during the 1000h exposure, a dense spinel oxide layer, mainly consisting of a fine Cr-rich inner layer ($NiCr_{2}O_{4}$) underneath a coarse Fe-rich outer layer ($NiFe_{2}O_{4}$), developed on each alloy. Besides general corrosion, nodular corrosion occurred on alloy 625 possibly resulting from local attack of ${\gamma}$" clusters in the matrix. The mass gains for all alloys were small, while alloy X -750 exhibited the highest oxidation rate, probably due to the absence of Mo.

  • The mechanical properties of Ni-Fe alloy were varied with the current type, current density and bath conditions such as concentrations and temperature. The effect of electroplating parameters on the surface hardness, mechanical strength, residual stress and wear properties were investigated. The mechanical properties of electrodeposits with PC plating is superior to those with DC plating. Ni-Fe electrodeposits with PC has approximately 50% lower residual stress than that of DC plating. The tensile strength of PC electroplated specimen was 15% higher than that of DC electroplated specimen. The wear resistance of PC specimen was 30% improved relative to that of DC specimen.

  • In this paper, core-shell structure of nickel/gold (Ni/Au) conductive layer on poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) micro-ball was fabricated and its conduction property was investigated. Firstly, PMMA micro-ball was synthesized by using dispersion polymerization method. Size of the ball was $2.8{\mu}m$ within ${\pm}7%$ deviation, and appropriate elastic deformation of the PMMA micro-ball ranging from 31 to 39% was achieved under 3 kg pressure. Also, 200 nm thick Ni/Au conductive layer was fabricated on the PMMA micro-ball by uniformly depositing with electroless-plating. Adhesion of the conductive layer was optimized with help of surface pre-treatment, and the layer adhered without peeling-off despite of thermal expansion by collision with accelerated electrons. Composite paste containing core-shell structured particles well cured at low temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ while pressing the test chip onto the substrate to make electrical contact, and electrical resistance of the conductive layer showed stable behavior of about $6.0{\Omega}$. Thus, it was known that core-shell structured particle of the Ni/Au conductive layer on PMMA micro-ball was feasible to flexible electronics.

  • Sn doped $In_2O_3$ (ITO) and ITO/Ni/ITO (INI) multilayer films were deposited on the glass substrates with a reactive magnetron sputtering system without intentional substrate heating and then the influence of the Ni interlayer on the methanol gas sensitivity of ITO and INI film sensors were investigated. Although both ITO and INI film sensors have the same thickness of 100 nm, INI sensors have a sandwich structure of ITO 50 nm/Ni 5 nm/ITO 45 nm. The changes in the gas sensitivity of the film sensors caused by methanol gas ranging from 100 to 1000 ppm were measured. It is observed that the INI film sensors show the higher sensitivity than that of the ITO single layer sensors. Finally, it can be concluded that the INI film sensor have the potential to be used as improved methanol gas sensors.

  • $Ni-Si_3N_4$ nano-composite coatings were prepared by pulse current (PC) electrodeposition and direct current (DC) electrodeposition techniques. The micro-structure of the coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vickers microhardness, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and wear-friction tests. The results showed that the micro-structure and wear performance of the coatings were affected by the electrodeposition techniques. Pulse current electrodeposited $Ni-Si_3N_4$ composite coatings exhibited higher microhardness, smooth surface, and better wear resistance properties as compared to coatings prepared under DC condition. The $Ni-Si_3N_4$ composite coatings prepared at 50 Hz pulse frequency with 10% duty cycles has shown higher codeposition of nano-particles. Consequently, increased microhardness and less plastic deformations occurred in coatings during sliding wear test. The XRD patterns revealed that the increased pulse frequencies changed the preferred (100) nickel crystallite orientations into mixed (111) and (100) orientations.

  • The electrodeposition of Ni-Co alloy from a sulfamate bath was investigated. The cobalt content in the Ni-Co deposits is more influenced by the temperature or stirring effect than the current density in the process parameters. As cobalt contents in the Ni-Co deposited layer increased from 0 wt.% up to 43 wt.%, hardness value of the layer rised from 400 Hv up to 700 Hv and crystal orientation (111) increased. However, (200) and crystal size significantly reduced. The tensile and yield strength also increased, while the modulus of elasticity showed the maximum value of $10.4N/mm^2$ at 29 wt.%.

  • Expensive silver powder is used to form electrodes in most IT equipment, and recently, many attempts have been made to lower manufacturing costs by developing powders with Ag-Ni or Ag-Cu core-shell structures. This study examined the sintering behavior of Ag-Ni electrode powder with a core-shell structure for silicon solar cell with high energy efficiency. The electrode powder was found to have a surface similar to pure Ag powder, and cross-sectional analysis revealed that Ag was uniformly coated on Ni powder. Each electrode was formed by sintering in the range of $500^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$, and the specimen sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ had the lowest sheet resistance of $5.5m{\Omega}/{\Box}$, which is about two times greater than that of pure Ag. The microstructures of electrodes formed at varying sintering temperatures were examined to determine why sheet resistance showed a minimum value at $600^{\circ}C$. The electrode formed at $600^{\circ}C$ had the best Ag connectivity, and thus provided a better path for the flow of electrons.

  • The microstructure and hardness of (W,Ti)C cemented carbides with a different metallic binder composition of Ni and Co fabricated by powder technology were investigated. The densifications of the prepared materials were accomplished by using vacuum sintering at $1450^{\circ}C$. Nearly full dense (W,Ti)C cemented carbides were obtained with a relative density of up to 99.7% with 30 wt.% Co and 99.9% with 30 wt.% Ni as a metallic binder. The average grain size of the (W,Ti)C-Co and the (W,Ti)C-Ni was decreased by increasing the metallic binder content. The hardness of the dense (W,Ti)C-15 wt%Co and (W,Ti)C-15 wt%Ni, was greater than that of the other related cemented carbides; in addition, the cobalt-based cemented carbides had greater hardness values than the nickel-based cemented carbides.

  • The present study aims to examine the influence of flame spray distance on the thermal behavior of micro-metal particles and the morphological characteristics of $Ni_{20}Cr$ layers coated on the preheated SCM415 substrates by using the conventional flame spray system. Commercially available nickel-based $Ni_{20}Cr$ particles with a mean diameter of $45{\mu}m$ were used. In addition, CFD simulations using a commercial code (FLUENT ver. 6.3.26) were conducted to estimate temperature and velocity distributions of the continuous and discrete phases before impact on the substrate. From FE-SEM images of coated layers on the substrates, it was observed that as the spray distance decreased, the metal particle morphology showed splash-like patterns and such a short stretch shape, resulting from higher particle momentums and the impact of partially melted particles. Moreover, it was found that the spray distance should be considered as one of important parameters in controlling the porosity and the adhesion strength.
