  • The adsorption of nickel(Ni) from sulfuric acid solution was carried out by ion exchange method. A series of batch tests in synthetic solutions were carried out using Lewatit Monoplus TP 220 resin. The following experimental parameters, such as temperature, shaking rate, reaction time, pH, resin dosage and concentration of nickel ions etc. were investigated to establish the effective optimum conditions of nickel adsorption. The solution pH(2.0~5.0) and shaking rate had little effects on the adsorption of nickel and adsorption time of 72hours was required to reach equilibrium. The experimental results show a good agreement with Feundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order reaction. The adsorption behavior of Ni obtained from synthetic solution was compared with that of waste electroplating solution. Elution of nickel from loaded resin increased with increase in $H_2SO_4$ concentration.

  • We fabricated thermally evaporated 30 nm-Ni/(20 nm or 60 nm)a-Si:H/Si films to investigate the energy-saving property of silicides formed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at temperatures of $350^{\circ}C$, $450^{\circ}C$, $550^{\circ}C$, and $600^{\circ}C$ for 40 seconds. A transmission electron microscope (TEM) and a high resolution X-ray diffractometer (HRXRD) were used to determine the cross-sectional microstructure and phase changes. A UVVIS-NIR and FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) were employed for near-IR and middle-IR absorbance. Through TEM and HRXRD analysis, for the nickel silicide formed at low temperatures below $450^{\circ}C$, we confirmed columnar-shaped structures with thicknesses of $20{\sim}30\;nm$ that had ${\delta}-Ni^2Si$ phases. Regarding the nickel silicide formed at high temperatures above $550^{\circ}C$, we confirmed that the nickel silicide had more than 50 nm-thick columnar-shaped structures with a $Ni_{31}Si_{12}$ phase. Through UV-VIS-NIR analysis, nickel silicide showed almost the same absorbance in the near IR region as well as ITO. However, in the middle IR region, the nickel silicides with low temperature showed similar absorbance to those from high temperature silicidation.

  • Macronutrients ($Na^+$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$), yield and yield components, bioaccumulation and translocation of metal in plant parts of three Vigna species (V. cylindrica, V. mungo, V. radiata) were evaluated at 0, 50, 100 and $150mgkg^{-1}$ soil of Nickel (Ni). A marked inhibition (p < 0.001) in the distribution of various macronutrients was noticed in these Vigna species except for $Mg^{2+}$ content of the shoot and leaves. Similarly, all species retained more $Ca^{2+}$ in their roots (p < 0.05) as compared to the aerial tissues. Ni induced a drastic decline (p < 0.001) for various yield and yield attributes except for 100 seed weight. Toxicity and accumulation of Ni in plant tissues considerably increased in a concentration dependent manner. Vigna species signify an exclusion approach for Ni tolerance as both bioaccumulation factor (BF) and translocation factor (TF) were less than 1.0. The Ni content of plants being root > shoot > leaves > seeds. Scoring for percentage stimulation and inhibition (respective to control) at varying levels of Ni revealed tolerance of the species in an order of V. radiata > V. cylindrica > V. mungo. The acquisition of Ni tolerance in V. radiata seems to occur through an integrated mechanism of metal tolerance that includes sustainable macronutrients uptake, stronger roots due to greater deposition of $Ca^{2+}$in the roots, restricted transfer of Ni to above ground tissues and seeds as well as exclusion capacity of the roots to bind appreciable amount of metal to them. Thus, metal tolerant potential of V. radiata could be of great significance to remediate metal contaminated soil owing lesser impact of Ni on macro-nutrients, hence the yield.

  • Nickel oxide (NiO) thin films were grown on soda-lime glass substrates by RF magnetron sputtering method at room temperature (RT), and they were post-annealed at the temperatures of $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes in vacuum. The electronic structure, optical and electrical properties of NiO thin films were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), reflection electron energy spectroscopy (REELS), UV-spectrometer and Hall Effect measurements, respectively. XPS results showed that the NiO thin films grown at RT and post annealed at temperatures below $300^{\circ}C$ had the NiO phase, but, at $400^{\circ}C$, the nickel metal phase became dominant. The band gaps of NiO thin films post annealed at temperatures below $300^{\circ}C$ were about 3.7 eV, but that at $400^{\circ}C$ should not be measured clearly because of the dominance of Ni metal phase. The NiO thin films post-annealed at temperatures below $300^{\circ}C$ showed p-type conductivity with low electrical resistivity and high optical transmittance of 80% in the visible light region, but that post-annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ showed n-type semiconductor properties, and the average transmittance in the visible light region was less than 42%. Our results demonstrate that the post-annealing plays a crucial role in enhancing the electrical and optical properties of NiO thin films.

  • In the study, Ni2+ (nickel) removal from synthetically prepared wastewater by electrocoagulation method, which is one of the electrochemical treatment processes, was investigated and parameters such as current density, pH, mixing speed, initial Ni2+ concentration, supporting electrolyte type and concentration were determined to determine Ni2+ removal efficiencies effects were studied. Experiment conditions during 30 minutes of electrolysis; the current density was determined as 0.95 mA/cm2, the initial pH of the wastewater was 6, the mixing speed was 150 rpm, and the initial nickel concentration was 250 mg/L. The Ni2+ removal efficiency was obtained as 75.99% under the determined experimental conditions, while the energy consumption was calculated as 3.15 kW-h/m3. In the experiments, it was observed that the type and concentration of the supporting electrolyte did not have a significant effect on the Ni2+ removal efficiency. In the trials where the effect of the support electrolyte concentration was examined, the Ni2+ removal efficiency was 75.99% in the wastewater environment without the supporting electrolyte, while the Ni2+ removal efficiency was 81.55% when 7.5 mmol/L NaCl was used after the 30-minute reaction, and the energy consumption was 2.15 kW-h/m3 obtained as. As a result of the studies, it was concluded that the electrocoagulation process can be applied in the treatment of wastewater containing Ni2+.

  • This study was conducted to find out concentration of trace metal, survival rate, falling rate and structural changes of the abalone Haliotis discus hannai exposed to nickel chloride. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and four nickel chloride exposure conditions (7.0, 12.0, 17.0 and $22.0\;NiCl_2\;mg/L$). The concentration of nickel in abalone was significantly increased all exposure groups. Though the exposure groups had lower survival rate than the control group, falling rate higher than the control group. Histopathological changes in the foot, gill and hepatopancreas of abalone was revealed prominently with exposure group than control group.

  • We fabricated thermally-evaporated 10 -Ni/(poly)Si and 10 -Ni/1 -Ir/(poly)Si structures to investigate the microstructure of nickel monosilicide at the elevated temperatures required for annealing. Silicides underwent rapid at the temperatures of 300-1200 for 40 seconds. Silicides suitable for the salicide process formed on top of both the single crystal silicon actives and the polycrystalline silicon gates. A four-point tester was used to investigate the sheet resistances. A transmission electron microscope(TEM) and an Auger depth profile scope were employed for the determination of vertical section structure and thickness. Nickel silicides with iridium on single crystal silicon actives and polycrystalline silicon gates shoed low resistance up to 1000 and 800, respectively, while the conventional nickle monosilicide showed low resistance below 700. Through TEM analysis, we confirmed that a uniform, 20 -thick silicide layer formed on the single-crystal silicon substrate for the Ir-inserted case while a non-uniform, agglomerated layer was observed for the conventional nickel silicide. On the polycrystalline silicon substrate, we confirmed that the conventional nickel silicide showed a unique silicon-silicide mixing at the high silicidation temperature of 1000. Auger depth profile analysis also supports the presence of thismixed microstructure. Our result implies that our newly proposed iridium-added NiSi process may widen the thermal process window for the salicide process and be suitable for nano-thick silicides.

  • Inhibition effects of histidine (His), methionine (Met) on the corrosion of nickel were investigated in deaerated 0.5 M HCl and 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution. All the inhibition efficiency for the nickel corrosion depended on the anodic inhibition. Amino acid adsorption process on nickel surface in the solution of HCl can be explained by modified Langmuir isotherm, however, in the solution of $H_2SO_4$ by Temkin logarithmic isotherm due to the interaction between the adsorbed molecules. The molecule of histidine dissolved in HCl-solution were physically adsorbed due to the electrostatic interaction between the surface of {$Ni-Cl^-$} and the {$-NH{_3}^+$} and {$-NH^+=$} of His. However the other cases of adsorption in this investigation can be explained by chemical adsorption between the empty d-orbital of Ni and the lone pair of electron in His and Met.

  • Nickel ferrite ($NiFe_2O_4$) powder was prepared through the ceramic route by calcination of a stoichiometric mixture of nickel oxide (NiO) and iron oxide ($Fe_2O_3$). The pressed pellets of $NiFe_2O_4$ were isothermally reduced in pure hydrogen at 800, 900, 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$. Based on thermogravimetric analysis, the reduction behavior and the kinetic reaction mechanisms of the synthesized ferrite were studied. The initial ferrite powder and various reduction products were characterized by XRD, SEM, reflected light microscope and VSM to reveal the effect of hydrogen reduction on the composition, microstructure, magnetic properties and reaction kinetics of the produced Fe-Ni alloy. Complete reduction of the $NiFe_2O_4$ was achieved with synthesis of homogeneous nanocrystalline Fe-Ni alloys. Arrhenius equation with the approved mathematical formulations for a gas-solid reaction was applied for calculating the activation energy ($E_a$) values and detecting the controlling reaction mechanism.
