Evaluation of Cavitation Characteristics in Seawater on HVOF Spray Coated Layer with WC-27NiCr Material for Cu Alloy (구리합금에 대한 WC-27NiCr 초고속화염용사 코팅층의 해수내 캐비테이션 특성 평가)

  • Copper alloys are commonly applied to ship's propellers, pumps and valves which are serviced in seawater due to their good castability and corrosion resistance. In the environment of high flow velocity, however, erosion damage predominates over corrosion damage. In particular, the cavitation in seawater environment accelerates surface damage to copper alloys, resulting in degradation of products and economic losses and also threatening safety. The surface was coated with WC-27NiCr by high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) spraying technique to attain durability and cavitation resistance of copper alloys under high velocity/pressure flow. The cavitation test was performed for the WC-27NiCr coating deposited by HVOF in seawater at the amplitude of $30{\mu}m$ with seawater temperature. The cavitation at $15^{\circ}C$ caused exfoliation of the coating layer in 17.5 hours while that of $25^{\circ}C$ caused the exfoliation in 12.5 hours. When the temperature of seawater was elevated to $25^{\circ}C$ from $15^{\circ}C$, more damage was induced by over 160%. Although WC-27NiCr has good durability, corrosion resistance and eletrochemical stability, the cavitation damage rate of the coating layer could remarkably increase at the elevated temperatures under cavitation environments.

  • Metal coating on ceramic powder has long been attracting interest for various applications such as superconductor where the brittle nature of high temperature ceramic superconductor was complemented by silver coating and metalloceramics where mechanical property improvement was achieved via electroless plating. More recently it has become of great interest in embedded passive device applications since metal coating on ceramic particles may result in the enhancement of the dielectric properties of ceramic-polymer composite capacitors. In our study, nickel ion-containing solution was used for coating commercial capacitor-grade $BaTiO_3$ powder. After filtering process, the powder was dried and heat-treated in 5% forming gas at $900^{\circ}C$. XRD and TEM were utilized for the observation of crystallization behavior and morphology of the particles. It was found that the nickel coating characteristics were strongly dependent on the several parameters and processing variables, such as starting $BaTiO_3$ particle size, nickel source, solution chemistry, coating temperature and time. In this paper, the effects of these variables on the coating characteristics will be presented in some detail.

  • To improve the corrosion resistance of separator wet-seal area which is the barrier of commercialization of molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC), Ni/Y/Al coating layer was fabricated by Ni electroplating and Y, Al e-beam PVD on AISI 316L stainless steel. NiAlY alloy coating layer was formed by heat treatment in reduction atmosphere at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5hr. Immersion test in molten carbonate salt at $650^{\circ}C$ was performed on as- received AISI 316L stainless steel and NiAlY coated specimen. According to cross sectional SEM/EDS observations, corrosion resistance of separator wet-seal area was improved by formation of dense oxide layers of Al and Y.

  • The oxidation behavior of the NiCrAlY bond coat and thermal fatigue failure in the plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coating system, ZrO2.8wt%Y2O3 top coat/Ni-26Cr-5Al-0.5Y bond coat/Hastelloy X superalloy substrate, in commercial use for finned segment of gas turbine burner were investigated. The main oxides formed in the bond coat were NiO, Cr2O3, and Al2O3. It divided the oxide distribution at this interface into two types whether an Al2O3 thin layer existed beneath ZrO2/bond coat interface before operation at high temperature or not. While a continuous layer of NiO was formed mainly in the region where the Al2O3 thin layer was present, the absence of it resulted in the formation of mixture of Cr2O3 and Al2O3 beneath NiO layer. Analyses on the fracture surface of specimen spalled by thermal cycling showed that spalling occurred mainly along the ceram-ic coat near ZrO2/bond coat oxide layer interface, but slightly in the oxide layer region.

Improving Electrochemical Performance of Ni-rich Cathode Using Atomic Layer Deposition with Particle by Particle Coating Method

  • Atomic layer deposition (ALD) enhances the stability of cathode materials via surface modification. Previous studies have demonstrated that an Ni-rich cathode, such as LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, is a promising candidate owing to its high capacity, but is limited by poor cycle stability. In this study, to enhance the stability of the Ni-rich cathode, synthesized LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 was coated with Al2O3 using ALD. Thus, the surface-modified cathode exhibited enhanced stability by protecting the interface from Ni-O formation during the cycling process. The coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 exhibited a capacity of 176 mAh g-1 at 1 C and retained up to 72% of the initial capacity after 100 cycles within a range of 2.8-4.3 V (vs Li/Li+. In contrast, pristine LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 presented only 58% of capacity retention after 100 cycles with an initial capacity of 173 mAh g-1. Improved cyclability may be a result of the ALD coating, which physically protects the electrode by modifying the interface, and prevents degradation by resisting side reactions that result in capacity decay. The electrochemical impedance spectra and structural and morphological analysis performed using electron microscopy and X-ray techniques establish the surface enhancement resulting from the aforementioned strategy.

  • Effects of metal coating treatment on SiC particle on wetting behavior and interfacial strength were studied. Experimental variables are included types of coated metallic films such as Cu and Ni-P, and temperatures of heat-treatment under vacuum. The experimental results concerning wetting phenomena of liquid Al on SiC, showed that coating treatment of metallic film on SiC particles remarkably improves the wetting behavior of liquid Al on SiC, especially in the case of Ni-P coating. The interfacial strength of Al/SiC composites made of coated SiC plate was higher than that of the composite with non-coated SiC plate although the coating treatment was not perfect.

  • In this study, the electrical conductivity and shielding effect were evaluated according to the type of metal and the thickness of Metal sprayed coating. The metals used for the test are Cu, Cu-Ni and Cu-Zn, and the thicknesses were 100, 200, 500 um. Each metal sprayed coating was evaluated for electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding effect. When the thickness was 200 ㎛ or more, shielding effect 80 dB or more was satisfied at 1 GHz. However, in the case of Cu-Ni, there is little electrical conductivity at a thickness of 100 um or less due to the generated voids, and electromagnetic wave shielding performance cannot be expected. Therefore, To ensure electromagnetic shielding effect of structures, it is considered that the minimum thickness of metal spraying coating should be 200 um.

Effects of phosphate coating on some performance of painted Al alloy sheet (도장 알루미늄 합금판의 성능에 미치는 인산염피막의 영향)

  • The effects of phosphate coating have been studied on physical properties and corrosion resistance of painted aluminum alloy sheet for automobile body. The physical properties (surface roughness, paint adhesion, impact resistance and pencil hardness) and corrosion resistance(cyclic corrosion and filiform corrosion) were investigated. Phosphate coatings enhanced the physical properties of painted Al alloy sheet, especially paint adhesion after the 240hours water immersion test. Phosphate coating also markedly improved the resistance for cyclic corrosion and filiform corrosion of painted cold rolled steel and Zn-Ni plated steel sheet as well as painted Al alloy sheet. The corrosion resistance of painted Al sheets was varied with the concentration of free fluoride ion and metal additives like Ni and Mn in the phosphating bath. A maximum corrosion resistance was obtained at about 300ppm of fluoride ion and additives of Ni and Mn obviously increased the corrosion resistance of painted specimens.

  • It has between investigated that the optimum spaying conditions, such as, spraying distance, fusing temperature and fusing time, ect, in a Ni-cr base self fluxing alloy sprayed on the mild steel substrate by oxygen-acetylenc flame spraying. Sprayed specimens on various conditions were fuused in a vacuum furnace and the results were as follows. The optimum spraying condition for excellent coating layer are obtained under spraying distances, fusing temperature and fusing and time ; 180~240mm,1050~110$0^{\circ}C$and 15~30min, respectively. The adhesive strength and surface hurface hardness of the as sprayed specimens were very low by mechanical bonding becaus of the diffusion layer during process. The carbides and borides and formed in the sprayed coating layer and densification of the layer was resulted from the elimination of pores and oxides. The hardness of sprayed coating layer, particularly in the high temperature, was superior to ordinary tool steels.

Corrsion of Ni-Ze Electrodeposited Alloy (아연-니켈합금 전기도금층의 부식특성)

  • Corrosion behavior of 5-26wt% Ni-Zn electrodeposited alloys was investigated by means of dipping electrochmical polarization measurement and galvanic coupling test. The weight loss and anodic polarization curve of coatings were measured by means of dipping and polarization measurement respectively. The galvanic protection effect of alloy coatings was measured by galvanic coupling test and the surface morpholgy of coatings was observed after corrosion testing. Our findings support thous of previous investigations showing that ${\gamma}$single phase coatings, while galvanic pprotection effect of dual phase coatings improved in comparison with ${\gamma}$single phase coating. The formation of colony in coating of ${\gamma}$and η+${\gamma}$ dual phsae caused the localized corrsion and increased the corrosion rate of the Ni-Zn coating.
