Some shape memory alloys like NiTi show noticeable high damping property in pseudoelastic range. Due to its instinct characteristics, a NiTi alloy is commonly used for passive damping applications, in which the energy may be dissipated by the conversion from mechanical to thermal energy. Previous researches found the NiTi wires own higher damping property than the bars; therefore the wire form is adopted in this study. A loss factor is introduced for measuring the damping property of the NiTi wires. The experimental observation shows the mechanical behaviors of NiTi wires are dependent on temperature, strain rate and strain amplitude. Moreover, it is found the first several decades of loading-unloading cycles can obviously influence the property of NiTi wires under the same working conditions.
The purpose of this study was to amount of the frictional forces with the brackets and wires, ligation methods, dry/wet, offsets, interbracket distances, velocity and to compare them each other by different conditions. This study tested 0.018'x0.025' slot sized 8 types of orthodontic bracket systems and 0.016', 0.016'x0.022' sized stainless steel, NiTi, Cu-NiTi orthodontic wires. One cuspid bracket were positioned on the slide glass and archwire was engaged into bracket and ligated with elastomeric modules. The values of frictional forces were measured with the instron universal testing machine. The results were as follows; 1. Polycrystalline ceramic bracket had the highest mean frictional forces and followed and by ceramic reinforced plastic bracket, metal bracket, plastic bracket with metal slot, monocrystalline ceramic bracket, single bracket, self-ligating bracket, friction free bracket in descending order. The self-ligating bracket showed low frictional forces in the round wires and high frictional forces in the rectangular wires. 2. Stainless steel wires had the least frictional forces and followed by NiTi, Cu-NiTi wires in descending order. Round wires had lower frictional forces then that of rectangular wires. 3. The stainless steel ligation method had significantly greater mean frictional forces them the elastomeric module ligation method. 4. Artificial saliva statistically increased the frictional forces in stainless steel wire, NiTi wire and Cu-NiTi wire. 5. There was a statistically significant difference with offset change 6. There was no statistically significant difference with interbracket distance in stainless steel wires but a significant difference in NiTi wires as the interbracket was decreased. 7 There was no statistically significant difference with velocity change. From the above findings, self-ligating bracket, stainless steel wires and the elastomeric module ligation method might be effective than any other materials to reduce the frictional forces in the orthodontic treatment and can be correlated to clinical situations seen in orthodontic patient care.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of mechanical properties, surface topography and frictional force of various nickel titanium wires after recycling. Three types of nickel-titanium wires and one type of stainless steel wire were divided to three groups: as-received condition(T0:control group), treated in artificial saliva for four weeks(T1) and autoclaved after being treated in artificial saliva(T2). Some changes were observed for the selected mechanical properties in tensile test, surface topography by means of SEM and 3D profilogram, and frictional coefficient. The findings suggest that: 1. Nickel-titanium wires demonstrated no statistically significant differences in maximum tensile strength, elongation rate and modulus of elasticity, but stainless steel wire demonstrated statistically significant differences in maximum tensile strength, elongation rate and modulus of elasticity between the groups(p<0.05). 2. NiTi, Optimalloy, Stainless Steel wires demonstrated increased pitting and corrosion in SEM finding. 3. Recycled NiTi, Optimalloy and stainless steel wires demonstrated significantly greater surface roughness(Ra and Rq) through 3D profilogram when compared with the control wires(p<0.05), but Sentalloy didn't demonstrate significant difference. 4. Recycled NiTi, Optimalloy and stainless steel wires demonstrated significantly greater maximum frictional coefficient when compared with the control wires(p<0.05), but Sentalloy didn't demonstrate significant difference The changes of surface roughness and frictional coefficient in NiTi and Optimalloy had no clinical implication. Consequently recycled nickel titanium wires demonstrated no clinical problem in tensile properties, surface topography and frictional coefficient.
The fatigue properties of Ti-Ni shape memory alloy wires were investigated. In Ni-rich Ti-Ni shape memory alloys, $Ti_3Ni_4$ precipitates formed by aging treatments are believed to vary the shape memory and mechanical properties. In this study, the effect of aging temperature and aging time on shape memory properties and fatigue life were investigated using Ti-50.9 at% Ni alloy wires. The specimens were solution-treated at 1073 K for 3.6 ks followed by aging at 573 K, 673 K and 773 K for periods between 3.6 ks and 3600 ks. It was found that the fatigue life under a constant stress decreased with increasing aging temperature. When the specimens were aged at 573 K for periods between 36 ks and 360 ks, superior shape memory and fatigue properties were obtained. The fatigue life also decreased when the test temperature and strain amplitude increased. It was concluded that the fatigue life exhibited a linear relationship with the critical stress for slip.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of polymer- and rhodium-coated wires compared to uncoated wires by measuring the frictional forces using self-ligation brackets. Methods: 0.016-inch nickel titanium (NiTi) wires and $0.017{\times}0.025$-inch stainless steel (SS) wires were used, and the angulations between the brackets and wires were set to $0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, and $10^{\circ}$. Upper maxillary premolar brackets (Clippy-C$^{(R)}$) with a 0.022-inch slot were selected for the study and a tensile test was performed with a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. The maximum static frictional forces and kinetic frictional forces were recorded and compared. Results: The maximum static frictional forces and the kinetic frictional forces of coated wires were equal to or higher than those of the uncoated wires (p < 0.05). The maximum static frictional forces of rhodium-coated wires were significantly higher than those of polymercoated wires when the angulations between the brackets and wires were set to (i) $5^{\circ}$ in the 0.016-inch NiTi wires and (ii) all angulations in the $0.017{\times}0.025$-inch SS wires (p < 0.05). The kinetic frictional forces of rhodium-coated wires were higher than those of polymer-coated wires, except when the angulations were set to $0^{\circ}$ in the 0.016-inch NiTi wires (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Although the frictional forces of the coated wires with regards to aesthetics were equal to or greater than those of the uncoated wires, a study under similar conditions regarding the oral cavity is needed in order to establish the clinical implications.
The work presented in this paper includes material characterisation and an investigation of suitability in seismic dampers for two commercially available NiTi-alloys, along with a numerical analysis of a new damper system employing composite NiTi-wires. Numerical simulations of the new damper system are conducted, using Brinson's one-dimensional constitutive model for shape memory alloys, with emphasis on the system's energy dissipation capabilities. The two alloys tested showed some unwanted residual strain at temperatures higher than $A_f$, possibly due to stress concentrations near inclusions in the material. These findings show that the alloys are not ideal, but may be employed in a seismic damper if precautions are made. The numerical investigations indicate that using composite NiTi-wires in a seismic damper enhances the energy dissipation capabilities for a wider working temperature range.
Ti-50.9at%Ni wires were welded using pulsed YAG laser. The laser welded wires were tested for investigating the shape memo교 effect and the ability of super elasticity. The fatigue properties of the welded wires were investigated using the rotary bending fatigue tester specially designed for wires. Moreover, the effect of defocusing distance during laser welding on the static and fatigue properties was investigated. The shape memory effect and super elasticity of the laser welded wires were approximately identical with that of base metal at the test temperature below 353K. However, the welded wires were broken within elastic limit at the test temperature above 353k. Under the cyclic bending loading conditions, the welded wires could be useful only below the elastic limit, while the base metal had sufficient fatigue life even the stress induced M-phase region. The fatigue strength of the welded wires was about half of that of the base metal. The deterioration of the static and fatigue properties in the welded wires was proven to be from the large difference of the transformation behavior between the base metal and welded part that is caused by vaporization of Ni-content at the welded part during the welding process. The defocusing distance below 3mm acted more largely on lowering the strength of the welded wires than that of 6mm or 8mm.
Purpose: This study was performed to compare the metal artifacts from common metal orthodontic brackets in magnetic resonance imaging. Material and Methods: A dry mandible with 12 intact premolars was prepared, and was scanned ten times with various types of brackets: American, 3M, Dentaurum, and Masel orthodontic brackets were used, together with either stainless steel (SS) or nickel titanium (NiTi) wires. Subsequently, three different sequences of coronal and axial images were obtained: spin-echo $T_1$-weighted images, fast spin-echo $T_2$-weighted images, and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images. In each sequence, the two sequential axial and coronal images with the largest signal-void area were selected. The largest diameters of the signal voids in the direction of the X-, Y-, and Z-axes were then measured twice. Finally, the mean linear values associated with different orthodontic brackets were analyzed using one-way analysis of variation, and the results were compared using the independent t-test to assess whether the use of SS or NiTi wires had a significant effect on the images. Results: Statistically significant differences were only observed along the Z-axis among the four different brands of orthodontic brackets with SS wires. A statistically significant difference was observed along all axes among the brackets with NiTi wires. A statistically significant difference was found only along the Z-axis between nickel-free and nickel-containing brackets. Conclusion: With respect to all axes, the 3M bracket was associated with smaller signal-void areas. Overall, the 3M and Dentaurum brackets with NiTi wires induced smaller artifacts along all axes than those with SS wires.
Structural health monitoring and structural vibration control are multidisciplinary and frontier research directions of civil engineering. As intelligent materials that integrate sensing and actuation capabilities, shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit multiple excellent characteristics, such as shape memory effect, superelasticity, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, and high energy density. Moreover, SMAs possess excellent resistance sensing properties and large deformation ability. Superfine NiTi SMA wires have potential applications in structural health monitoring and micro-drive system. In this study, the mechanical properties and electrical resistance sensing characteristics of superfine NiTi SMA wires were experimentally investigated. The mechanical parameters such as residual strain, hysteretic energy, secant stiffness, and equivalent damping ratio were analyzed at different training strain amplitudes and numbers of loading-unloading cycles. The results demonstrate that the detwinning process shortened with increasing training amplitude, while austenitic mechanical properties were not affected. In addition, superfine SMA wires showed good strain-resistance linear correlation, and the loading rate had little effect on their mechanical properties and electrical resistance sensing characteristics. This study aims to provide an experimental basis for the application of superfine SMA wires in engineering.
NiTi-wire shape memory alloy (SMA) dampers, that utilize NiTi SMA wires to simultaneously damp tension, compression and torsion, was developed for structural control implementation in this study. First, eight reduced-scale NiTi-wire SMA dampers were constructed. Then tension, compression and torsion experiments using the eight reduced-scale NiTi-wire SMA dampers of different specification were done. The experimental results revealed all of the eight reduced-scale NiTi-wire SMA dampers had the ability to simultaneously supply tension-compression damping and torsion damping. Finally, mechanics analysis of the NiTi-wire SMA dampers was done based on a model of the SMA-wire restoring force and on tension-compression and torsion damping analysis. The damping analytical results were found to be similar to the damping experimental results.
