  • Equalizing the state of charge of cell that affects the charge/discharge quality and efficiency of the battery through the charge/discharge characteristic experiments of battery source, we develope the high efficiency charge/discharge system which would be used in serial HEV with the constant engine-generator output. For this, establishes the electrical model of Ni-MH battery appropriate to the high efficiency charge/discharge conditions. There is no model of Ni-MH cell, so we used Ni-Cd model and obtain the Ni-MH model through the experiment. A reason that each cell has the same charge/discharge property for applying the cell model to serial/parallel connected battery source extensively is needed. Therefore, in this paper, propose the Ni-MH charger/discharger has the equalization charging function and selectable cut-off function.

  • Railway vehicle battery is supplying the power required for the initial start-up of the train, in the event of a fault in the vehicle, or catenary for supplying emergency power is one of the components are very important. Currently, the railway vehicles such as nickel-cadmium batteries are being used [1,2]. Ni-Cd batteries as a battery installed in the railway vehicles have a strong corrosion resistance is included, The charge-discharge performance is significantly degraded in cold weather, there is a danger of deterioration or explosion. Train accidents have been caused a lot of damage due to rapid deterioration and cracking of the battery and memory due to the effect of Ni-Cd batteries. In order to solve the problems, There is no risk of degradation, deterioration and leakage, cracking and exploding. maintenance is simple and applied measures proposed to apply Lithium Polymer battery of high performance. In addition, the lack of capacity problems identified by testing the different special systems is replaced by a 70Ah lithium-polymer battery is possible without changing the batteries of 50Ah caused by installing additional equipment in existing older trains were applied to the vehicle.

  • Lithium-ion batteries providing high gravimetric energy density are rapidly replacing Ni-Cd and Ni-H2 in aerospace applications. The main advantage is the weight reduction of the battery system. Weight is a major concern in aerospace applications. Also, lithium-ion offer low thermal dissipation, high energy efficiency, and low cell cost. The Onboard battery module for KSLV-I(Korea Space Launch Vehicle) contains 80 Sony US18650 cells configured as 10 strings in parallel, with each string containing 8 series connected cells. This allows to meet voltage and capacity requirements specified for the mission. In this paper design description and specifications of lithium-ion battery developed are presented. Qualification test flow is also shown to make sure the performance in the predicted space environment. Electrical performance was simulated by dedicated program, and verified with electronic load. Lastly, the capacity was proven on real equipment load assembly.

  • Cementation is one of economical and efficient recycling method precipitating the metal ion in solution by adding another active metal. In this study for optimizing cadmium recovery efficiency, it was performed as a function of the effect of pH, temperature, particle size, and input amount of zinc in 0.1 M $CdSO_4$ solution and Ni-Cd battery leaching solutions, respectively. The particle size of zinc and temperature were key factors for Cd cementation and it was confirmed that the input amount of 2.6 of Zn/Cd ratio using granular-type zinc was optimal condition for selective Cd recovery efficiency at $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Solvent extraction experiments for separation of impurities from Ni-rich solution were carried out for manufacturing of high purity Ni compounds from acid leaching solution of spent Ni-Cd secondary battery. Artificial and leaching solutions were used as aqueous phases and PC88A saponified by sodium in kerosene were used as organic phase. The extraction order is Zn>Mn>Co>Ni and extraction percentage of metal ions was increased with increase of the concentration of extractant, initial pH of aqueous phase and ratio of O/A. The separation of cobalt, zinc and manganese from nickel was effectively accomplished at the condition of extraction stage=l, O/A=1 and initial pH 5.0 with 1.0 $mol/dm^3$ PC88A saponified to $50\%$ with NaOH.

  • This paper presents the conceptual design of the electrical power system using Li-ion cell technology for a satellite application. Compared to a conventional NiCd cell, a Li-ion cell has a lot of advantages such as an energy density, mass and a volume. Normally, a Li-ion cell has three times than conventional NiCd cells in a capacity such as a cell voltage. The normal voltage of a NiCd cell is around +1.2V and a Li-ion cell could be in +3.6V. However, the handling procedure for a Li-ion cell in charge and discharge might be difficult than a conventional NiCd cell, which means that the charge and discharge of each cell should be monitored and controlled by electrical circuits to prevent an over-charge and over-discharge. Therefore, in this paper we propose the design consideration and the characteristics of a Li-ion cell during charging and discharging battery packs in the point of view of electrical power system.

  • In order to recycle waste nickel-cadmium batteries, cadmium was selectively removed by ion substitution reaction so that cadmium and nickel could be separated efficiently. The electrode powder obtained by crushing the electrode in the waste nickelcadmium battery was leached with sulfuric acid. The cadmium in the nickel-cadmium solution was precipitated with cadmium sulfide by the addition of sodium sulfide. Ion substitution experiments were carried out under various conditions. At the optimum condition with pH = -0.1 and $Na_2S/Cd=2.3$ at room temperature, the residual Cd in the solution was about 100 ppm, and most of it was precipitated with CdS.

  • Li ion battery have many advantages such as high energy density, high voltage and low self discharge, so it will replace conventional Ni/Cd battery. But, charge-discharge characterization of Li battery is controlled by weight ratio of electrodes (Cathode/Anode). So, we performed a study on relation between charge/discharge characterization and weight ratio (cathode/anode).
