  • Continuous cooling transformation behaviors were studied fur low carbon HSLA steels containing three different level $(1\~3\;wt\%)$ of Ni addition. Thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) simulations to construct continuous cooling (CCT) diagram were conducted by using Gleeble system. As cooling rate increased, pearlite, granular bainite, acicular ferrite, bainitic ferrite and lath martensite were transformed from deformed austenite. Fully bainitic microstructure were developed at all cooling rate condition in high Ni containing steel due to hardenability increasing effects of Ni. Ni also influenced the transformation kinetics. At the slowest cooling rate of $0.3^{\circ}C/s$, transformation delayed with decreasing Ni contents because of the diffusion of substitutional alloy elements. However, cooling rate slightly increased to $1^{\circ}C/s$, transformation kinetics accelerated with decreasing Ni contents because nucleation of bainite was sluggish due to hardening of residual austenite.

  • A study has been performed to investigate the thermo-mechanical effects of thermal barrier coating on liquid rocket regenerative cooling chamber using finite element analysis. Two kinds of thermal barrier coatings were studied on the same loading condition: first, NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$, coating which is currently applied to the developing combustion chamber and second, Ni-Cr coating which might be applied in the future. Analysis results showed that NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$ coating has better decreasing effect of temperature than the Ni-Cr coating. As a results, temperature and deformation of the cooling channel in the NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$ coating were also less than those of the Ni-Cr coating. The Ni-Cr coating has no effect on a structural stability of the outer jacket but the NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$ coating reduced the effective stress of the outer jacket and enhanced the structural stability of the chamber.

  • Growth and flowering of Cymbidium 'Red Fire' and 'Yokihi' plants were examined in a greenhouse with cooling systems in summer, and with night interruption (NI) lighting in winter as a forcing culture system. The greenhouse was divided into two sections with separate cooling controls during the summer season. One section was cooled by a mist system (mist), while the other section was cooled by a shade screen (shade). During the winter, the greenhouse was redivided into three sections within each cooling system. Plants were grown with NI either at a low light intensity of $3-7{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$(LNI) or a high l ight intensity of $120{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$(HNI) u sing h igh-pressure sodium l amps during the 22:00-02:00 HR. The control plants were grown under 9 h short-day condition. NI for 16 weeks and cooling for 9 weeks were employed twice during the 2 years of the experimental period. The air temperature was approximately $2^{\circ}C$ lower in the mist than in the shade and the relative humidity was 80 ${\pm}5%$ in the mist compared to $55{\pm}5%$ in the shade. The daily light integral in the mist section was 48% higher than in the shade section. The time from initial planting to flowering pseudobulb emergence decreased with both LNI and HNI for both cultivars, regardless of the cooling treatments. Under NI conditions, however, between 60% and 1 00% of plants of both cultivars flowered in the mist, whereas no or 20% of 'Red Fire' or 'Yokihi' plants, respectively, flowered in the shade treatment over 2 years. Plants grown under the mist had bigger pseudobulbs than those grown in the shade under both NI treatments. These results show that commercial use of NI in winter and a mist cooling system in summer would decrease crop production time to 2 years and increase profits in Cymbidium forcing culture.

  • Thermal analyses have been performed to study the effect of location of fuel ring and thermal barrier coatings in regenerative cooling channels in a full-scale combustor. For the effective cooling, the fuel ring has better be installed near axial location of the low expansion ratio and low heat flux, and branching of cooling channels is preferable. Also, the radiative cooled nozzle extension is thought to be reasonable for the cooling of combustion walls. Among the possible coatings, $Y_2O_3$ stabilized $ZrO_2$ coating and Ni/Cr coating have been adopted. Compared with Ni/Cr coating which has high oxidation resistance, $Y_2O_3$ stabilized $ZrO_2$ coating, one of ceramic coatings is found to be much effective to sustain the thermal survivability of combustion walls.

  • In the undercooled melt of $Pd_{40}Cu_{30}Ni_{10}P_{20}$ alloy, the solidification behavior including nucleation and growth of crystals at the micrometer level has been observed in-situ by use of a confocal scanning laser microscope combined with an infrared image furnace. The $Pd_{40}Cu_{30}Ni_{10}P_{20}$ alloy specimens were cooled from the liquid state to glass transition temperature. 575 K, at various cooling late under a helium gas flow. According to the cooling rate, the morphologies of the solidification front are changed among various types, irregular jog like front, columnar dendritic front, cellular grain, star like shape jog and fine grain, etc. The velocities of the solid-liquid interface are measured to be $10^{-5}{\sim}10^{-8}$ m/s which are at least two orders higher than the theoretical crystal growth rates. Combining the morphologies observed in terms of cooling rates and their solidification behaviors, we conclude that phase separation takes place in the undercooled molten $Pd_{40}Cu_{30}Ni_{10}P_{20}$ alloy. The continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram was constructed from solidification onset time at various linear cooling conditions with different rate. The CCT diagram suggests that the critical cooling rate for glassy solidification is about 1.5 K/s, which is in agreement with the previous calorimetric findings.

  • TiC-Ni and TiC-Ni-Mo cermet powders were produced by Self-propagating High temperature Synthesis (SHS) process. The cooling rate of synthesized powders were controlled by using the V-shaped copper jig and the carbide size decreased with increasing the cooling rate I. e decreasing the width of copper jig Round shape carbide particles were produced after SHS reaction in TiC-Ni as well as TiC-Ni-Mo powders. Local segregation of Mo rich phases was observed in SHS powder of TiC-Ni-Mo and the uneven dis-triobution of Mo promoted the faster growth rate of carbide particles during sintering compared to the same composition specimen with commercial TiC powder. Howogeneous microstructure of TiC-Ni-Mo cermet was obtained when the elemental Mo powder was mixed with the SHS powder of TiC-Ni.

  • The mechanical properties of Cr-Ni alloy of austenitic stainless steel and Co-Cr alloy orthodontic wires were studied in tension. The wires (0.018 inch) were tested in the as-manufactured and heat-treated conditions. Instron type tension testing machine was used for this study. Mean values and standard deviations were computed. The results were as follows; 1. The Cr-Ni orthodontic wires of austenitic stainless steel are generally superior than the Co-Cr orthodontic wires in ultimate tensile strength, In the elongation, however, Co-Cr orthodontic wire are superior than Cr-Ni orthodontic wires. 2. Increase in the degree of strength by heat treatment are more clearly shown in Co-Cr orthodontic wires than Cr-Ni orthodontic wires. And the elongation is decreased by heat treatment in both case. 3. The changes of the degree of strength by cooling method we not clearly shown, but in Cr-Ni orthodontic wires, air cooling are more effective, in Co-Cr orthodontic wires, cooling effect are scarcely shown.

  • Objective: The aim of this research was to evaluate the mechanical properties (MP) and degree of the phase transformation (PT) of martensitic (M-NiTi), austenitic (A-NiTi) and thermodynamic nickel-titanium wire (T-NiTi). Methods: The samples consisted of $0.016\;{\times}\;0.022$ inch M-NiTi (Nitinol Classic, NC), A-NiTi (Optimalloy, OPTI) and T-NiTi (Neo-Sentalloy, NEO). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), three-point bending test, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microstructure examination were used. Statistical evaluation was undertaken using ANOVA test. Results: In DSC analysis, OPTI and NEO showed two peaks in the heating curves and one peak in the cooling curves. However, NC revealed one single broad and weak peak in the heating and cooling curves. Austenite finishing ($A_f$) temperatures were $19.7^{\circ}C$ for OPTI, $24.6^{\circ}C$ for NEO and $52.4^{\circ}C$ for NC. In the three-point bending test, residual deflection was observed for NC, OPTI and NEO. The load ranges of NC and OPTI were broader and higher than NEO. XRD and microstructure analyses showed that OPTI and NEO had a mixture of martensite and austenite at temperatures below Martensite finishing ($M_f$). NEO and OPTI showed improved MP and PT behavior than NC. Conclusions: The mechanical and thermal behaviors of NiTi wire cannot be completely explained by the expected degree of PT because of complicated martensite variants and independent PT induced by heat and stress.

  • The present work is an attempt to evaluate the relationship between dendrite arm spacing and average cooling rate in gasatomized $Al_{87.3}misch$ $metal_{8.3}Ni_{4.4}$ powder by means of the following methods. One is calculation of heat transfer coefficient and average cooling rate, which are derived from estimated particle velocity during gas-atomization. The other is measurement of secondary dendrite arm spacing, which are observed on the particle surface. Then, we make experimental equation for this relationship in case of permanent mold casting and compare it with similar equation in case of rapidly solidified powder. Both average cooling rates and solidification rates are considered to represent the variance of dendrite arm spacings in two types soidification route. Even though there is a considerable difference in each average cooling rate, the dendrite arm spacing values are similar in two cases; particle diameter, $100\;{\mu}m$, and casting width, 2.05 mm. It is because that each solidification route has similar solidification rate.
