  • In this research, we investigate electrical performance and electrochemical properties of graphene supported Pt (Pt/G) and PtM (M = Ni and Y) alloy catalysts (PtM/Gs) that are synthesized by modified polyol method. With the PtM/Gs that are adopted for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as cathode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), their catalytic activity and ORR performance and electrical performance are estimated and compared with one another. Their particle size, particle distribution and electrochemically active surface (EAS) area are measured by TEM and cyclic voltammetry (CV), respectively. On the other hand, regarding ORR activity and electrical performance of the catalysts, (i) linear sweeping voltammetry by rotating disk electrode and rotating ring-disk electrode and (ii) PEMFC single cell tests are used. The TEM and CV measurements demonstrate particle size and EAS of PtM/Gs are compatible with those of Pt/G. In case of PtNi/G, its half-wave potential, kinetic current density, transferred electron number per oxygen molecule and $H_2O_2$ production % are excellent. Based on data obtained by half-cell test, when PEMFC singlecell tests are carried out, current density measured at 0.6V and maximum power density of the PEMFC single cell employing PtNi/G are better than those employing Pt/G. Conclusively, PtNi/Gs synthesized by modified polyol shows better ORR catalytic activity and PEMFC performance than other catalysts.

  • In this study, the direct amination of ethanol was performed over impregnated Ni on SiO2-Al2O3 mixed oxide catalysts prepared by varying Si/(Si + Al) molar ratio to 30 mol%. To characterize the physico-chemical properties of the catalysts used, X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-physisorption, temperature-programmed desorption of iso-propyl alcohol (IPA-TPD), temperature-programmed desorption of ethanol (EtOH-TPD), temperature-programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), H2-chemisorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used. The acidic property was continuously increased until Si/(Si + Al) = 30 mol% in SiO2-Al2O3 mixed oxides used. The dispersion of Ni metal and surface area, acid characteristics of the supported Ni catalyst have a complex effect on the catalytic reaction activity. The low reduction temperature of nickel oxide and acidic properties were beneficial to the formation of acetonitrile. In terms of conversion of ethanol, Ni/SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst with a molar ratio of 10 mol% Si/(Si+Al) showed the highest activity and a volcanic curve based on it. The tendency of results were consistent in the metal dispersion and catalytic activity.

  • WGS reaction over Mo2C and ceria based catalysts was investigated to develop an alternative commercial Cu-Zn/Al2O3 catalyst for fuel processor and hydrogen station. The Mo2C catalysts were prepared by a temperature programmed method and the various metal supported cerium oxide catalysts were prepared by an Impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by the N2 physisorption, Co chemisorption, XRD, TEM and TPR. It was found that Mo2C and 0.2wt% Pt-40wt%, Ni/CeO2 catalysts had higher activity and stability than the Cu-Zn/Al203 above $260^{\circ}C$. Moreover, CO conversion of more than 85% was observed at $280{\sim}300^{\circ}C$. But all catalysts were deactivated during the thermal cycling runs. The results suggest that these catalysts are an attractive candidate for the alternative Cu-Zn/Al2O3 catalyst for fuel processor and hydrogen station applications.

  • Recently, research on the development of low-cost/high-efficiency water electrolysis catalysts to replace noble metal catalysts is being actively conducted. Since overvoltage reduces the overall efficiency of the water splitting device, lowering the overvoltage of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the most important task in order to generate hydrogen more efficiently. Currently, noble metal catalysts show excellent characteristics in OER performance, but they are experiencing great difficulties in commercialization due to their high price and efficiency limitations due to low reactivity. In this study, a water electrolysis catalyst Ni-MWCNT was prepared by successfully doping Ni into the MWCNTs structure through the pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) process. High resolution-transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were performed for the structure and chemical composition of the synthesized Ni-MWCNT. Catalytic oxygen evolution reaction evaluation was performed by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) overvoltage characteristics, Tafel slope, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Chronoamperometry (CA) was used for measurement.

  • This study has been focused on the partial oxidation(POX) of n-octane over Rh-containing catalysts supported on alumina. The catalysts for this reaction were prepared by incipient wetness(IW) and co-gel(CG) methods, followed by the calcination at $900{\circ}C$ or $1,200{\circ}C$. When applied to the POX of n-octane carried out at $600{\circ}C$ with C/O=3 and GHSV=3,450/h, the catalyst prepared by the CG method and calcined at $1,200{\circ}C$ showed the best activity, yielding 42% syngas($H_2$+CO) with the $H_2$/CO ratio of $2{\sim}2.4$. To enhance the activity and stability of catalysts, bimetallic catalysts were synthesized by the CG method. As a result, the performance of Rh-Ni/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was superior to that of Rh/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst in terms of the catalyst stability, due to the retarding effect on the Rh-to-$Rh_2O_3$ transition by the addition of Ni. This result was confirmed by XRD, TEM, and TPR characterizations.

  • This research project focused on the production of hydrogen through ammonia decomposition reactions while investigating how the reactivity of this process varies when employing different catalysts. Several metal oxide supports (Al2O3, La2O3, CeO2) were utilized as catalysts, with active metals from both the transition metal group (Co, Ni, Fe, Cr, Cu) and the noble metal group (Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt) impregnated onto these supports. Furthermore, the study examined how the reactivity evolves with changes in reaction temperature when employing the prepared catalysts. Additionally, the research delved into the distinctive activation energies associated with each of the catalysts. In this research, In the noble metal catalyst system, the order of high activity for ammonia decomposition reaction to produce hydrogen is Ru > Rh > Pt ≈ Pd. In the transition metal catalyst system, the order of high activity is Co > Ni > Fe > Cr > Cu.

  • The catalytic reaction between carbon monoxide and oxygen was investigated in the presence of catalysts which were specially treated by applying an annealing method at different monoxide and oxygen and at reaction temperatures in the region of partial pressures of carbon $40^{\circ}C$ to $95^{\circ}C$. The oxidation rate is highest on NiO annealed at low temperature in vacuum. The data has been correlated with the first order kinetics, and the activation energies from the Arrhenius equation are found to be 4Kcal/mole in the region of the experimental temperatures. The excess oxygen in NiO obtained from the decomposition of $NiCO_3$does not cause activation at $95^{\circ}C$. But NiO catalysts annealed again in vacuum display activation even at $40^{\circ}C$. The quantity of the excess oxygen in NiO surfaces seems to be the controlling factor in determining the rates of oxidation of carbon monoxide.

  • The catalytic yields of POM to hydrogen over M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = La, Ce, Y) were investigated using a fixed bed flow reactor under atmosphere. The crystal phase behavior of reduced La(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 catalysts before and after the reaction were studied via XRD analysis. FESEM and EDS analyses were further performed to show the uniformed distribution of La, Ni, and Ce metal particles on the catalyst surface. XPS results showed O2-, O22- species and metal ions such as Ce3+, Ce4+, La3+ and Ni2+ etc. were on the catalyst surface. When 1 wt% of La was added to Ni(5)/AlCeO3 catalyst, Ni2p3/2 and Ce3d5/2 increased 52.7 and 6.3%, respectively. The yield of hydrogen on the La(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 catalyst was 89.1%, which was much better than that of M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = Ce, Y). As Ce4+ ions of CeO2 produced by the reaction of AlCeO3 with oxygen were substitute to La3+, it made oxygen vacancies in the lattice and further improved the hydrogen yield by increasing the dispersion of Ni atoms with strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect.

  • Strong solid acid catalysts, NiO/Al2O3-TiO2/WO3 for ethylene dimerization were prepared by the addition of Al2O3 and the modification with WO3. The acid sites and acid strength were increased by the inductive effect of WO3 species bonded to the surface of catalysts. The larger the dispersed WO3 amount, the higher both the acidity and catalytic activity for ethylene dimerization. The addition of Al2O3 to TiO2 up to 5 mol% enhanced acidity and catalytic activity gradually due to the interaction between Al2O3 and TiO2 and consequent formation of Al-O-Ti bond.
