  • Nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles were synthesized by a reaction of nickel nitrate hexahydrate (Ni(NO3)2·6H2O) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The synthesized NiO nanoparticles were examined with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The NiO nanoparticles were used as the catalyst for the reduction of o- and m-nitroaniline to phenylenediamine. The reduction rate of m-nitroaniline was faster than that of o-nitroaniline. The reduction rate for both o- and m-nitroaniline increased as the reaction temperature increased. The rate of reduction for nitroaniline followed a pseudo first-order reaction rate law.

  • In this study, the electroless nickel plating method has been investigated for the coating of Ni nanoparticles onto fine Al powder as promising energetic materials. The adsorption of nickel nanoparticles onto the surface of Al powders has been studied by varying various process parameters, namely, the amounts of reducing agent, complexing agent, and pH-controller. The size of nickel nanoparticles synthesized in the process has been optimized to approximately 200 nm and they have been adsorbed on the Al powder. TGA results clearly show that the temperature at which oxidation of Al mainly occurs is lowered as the amount of Ni nanoparticles on the Al surface increases. Furthermore, the Ni-plated Al powders prepared for all conditions show improved exothermic reaction due to the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) between Ni and Al. Therefore, Al powders fully coated by Ni nanoparticles show the highest exothermic reactivity: this demonstrates the efficiency of Ni coating in improving the energetic properties of Al powders.

  • NiO nanofibers with Au nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel and electrospinning techniques, in which the reduction process by ultraviolet exposure is included for the growth of Au nanoparticles in the electrospinning solution. FE-SEM(Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy), TEM(Transmission Electron Microscopy) revealed that the synthesized nanofibers had the diameter of approximately 200 nm. X-ray diffraction showed the successful formation of Au-decorated NiO nanofibers. Gas sensing tests of Au-decorated NiO nanofibers were performed using reducing gases of CO, and $C_6H_6$, $C_7H_8$, $C_2H_5OH$. Compared to as-synthesized NiO nanofibers, the response of Au-loaded NiO nanofibers to CO gas was found to be about 3.4 times increased. On the other hand, the response increases were only 1.1-1.3 times for $C_6H_6$, $C_7H_8$, and $C_2H_5OH$.

  • A glucose hydrothermal method is described for preparing hollow carbon spheres (HCS), which have a regular morphology and a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 28.6 m2/g. Scanning electron microscopy shows that they have thin shells and diameter between 2 and 8 ${\mu}m$. The HCSs were modified for the enhanced room temperature hydrogen storage by employing Ni nanoparticles on their surface. The Ni-decorated HCSs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy coupled with an energy dispersive spectroscope, and an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, indicating that fine and well-distributed Ni nanoparticles can be accomplished on the HCSs. The hydrogen uptake capacity in HCSs with and without Ni loading was evaluated using a high-pressure microbalance at room temperature under a hydrogen pressure upto 9 MPa. As much as 1.23wt.% of hydrogen can be stored when uniformly distributed Ni nanoparticles are formed on the HCSs, while the hydrogen uptake capacity of as-received HCSs was 0.41 wt.%. For Ni nanoparticle-loaded HCSs, hydrogen molecules could be easily dissociated into atomic hydrogen and then chemically adsorbed by the sorbents, leading to an enhanced capacity for storing hydrogen.

  • Magnetic nanoparticles can potentially be used in drug delivery systems and for hyperthermia therapy. The applicability of $Fe_3O_4$, $CoFe_2O_4$, $MgFe_2O_4$, and $NiFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles for the same was studied by evaluating their magnetization, thermal efficiency, and biocompatibility. $Fe_3O_4$ and $CoFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles exhibited large magnetization. $Fe_3O_4$ and $NiFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles exhibited large induction heating. $MgFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles exhibited low magnetization compared to the other nanoparticles. $NiFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles were found to be cytotoxic, whereas the other nanoparticles were not cytotoxic. This study indicates that $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles could be the most suitable ones for hyperthermia therapy.

  • Carbon-encapsulated Ni and metal Ni nanoparticles were synthesized by levitational gas condensation (LGC). Methane ($CH_4$) gas was used to coat the surface of the Ni nanoparticles. The Ni particles had a core diameter of 10 nm, and were covered by 2~3 nm thin carbon layers with multi-shells structure. The low magnetization comparing with the Ni nanoparticles without carbon-shell results in the coexistence of nonmagnetic carbon and a large surface spin percentage with disordered magnetization orientation for the nanoparticles. Biginelli reactions in the presence of L-proline and Ni and carbon encapsulated Ni nanoparticles were carried out to change the ratio between stereoisomers. The obtained S-enantiomers for 3,4-dihydropyrimidine (DHPM) using catalysts of Ni, and Ni@C was an excess of about ${\Delta}{\sim}7.4%$ and ${\Delta}{\sim}19.6%$, respectively. The nanopowders were fully recovered using magnet to reuse as a catalyst. The Ni@C was shown at same yield to formation of 3,4-DHPM, though it was recycled for catalyst in the reaction.

  • In this study, Niacinamide (NI) was loaded into solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) and skin permeability was evaluated to improve skin permeability of NI, which was a skin whitening substance. NI was able to effectively load within SLN with a double-melting emulsification method, producing stable particles with average particle sizes of 263.30 to 436.93 nm and a zeta potential of -34.77 to -57.60 mV. Artificial skin tissue (SkinEthicTM RHE) derived from skin keratinocytes derived from human epidermal tissue was used for the skin permeation study of NI. Skin transmittance and deposition experiments of NI confirmed that all SLN formulations improved skin transmittance and deposition rates of NI, approximately 5.4 ~ 7.6 and 9.5 ~ 20.8 improvement over SLN applications. Therefore, SLN manufactured in this study have shown sufficient results to improve the skin permeability of the functional whitening substance, NI.

  • In this study, the effects of the dispersants, i.e., Hypermer KD-2 and poly(l-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP), and their concentration on the dispersion stability of Ni nanoparticles ($10nm{\sim}40nm$) in ethanol were investigated by using a visual inspection, a transmission profile (Turbiscan), and a zeta potential measurement. The transmission profiles measured by Turbiscan showed that the particle size increased over the entire height of the sample for suspensions with both the dispersants without showing any particle coalescence and sedimentation. The visual inspection also confirmed that the Ni suspensions with Hypermer KD-2 and PVP were very stable for more than a year. The zeta potential values varied from positive to negative with increasing the dispersant's concentration. The dispersion stability of the suspensions was not affected by both the dispersant's concentration and the zeta potential values. The observed suspension stability of Ni nanoparticles was attributed to the steric effect for the Hypermer KD-2 and to the bridging effect for the PVP.

  • Organic solar cell was fabricated using one-pot deposition of a mixture of NiO nanoparticles, P3HT and PCBM. In the presence of NiO, the photovoltaic performance was slightly increased comparing to that of the device without NiO. When $TiO_2$ thin films with a thickness of 2~3 nm was prepared on NiO nanoparticles using atomic layer deposition, the power conversion efficiency was increased by a factor 2.5 with respect to that with bare NiO. Moreover, breakdown voltage of the film consisting of NiO, P3HT, and PCBM on indium tin oxide was increased by more than 1 V in the presence of $TiO_2$-shell on NiO nanoparticles. It is evidenced that S atoms of P3HT can be oxidized on NiO surfaces, and $TiO_2$-shell on NiO nanoparticles. It is evidenced that S atoms of P3HT can be oxidzed on NiO surfaces, and $TiO_2$ shell heavily reduced oxidation of S at oxide/P3HT interfaces. Oxidized S atoms can most likely act as carrier generation sites and recombination centers within the depletion region, decreasing breakdown voltage and performance of organic solar cells. Our result shows that fabrication of various core-shell nanostruecutres of oxides by atomic layer deposition with controlled film thickness can be of potential importance for fabricating highly efficient organic solar cells.

  • To synthesize Fe/Ni nanocatalysts loaded on carbon black, Iron(II) acetylacetonate and nickel (II) acetylacetonate and were reduced to Fe and Ni metallic nanoparticles by a spontaneous reduction reaction. The distribution of the Fe and Ni nanoparticles was observed by transmission electron microscopy, and the loading weight of Fe/Ni nanocatalysts on the carbon black was measured by thermogravimetric analyzer. The elemental ratio of Fe and Ni was estimated by energy dispersive x-ray analyzer. It was found that the loading weight of Fe/Ni nanoparticles was 6.23 wt%, and the elemental ratio of Fe and Ni was 0.53:0.40. Specific surface area was measured by BET analysis instrument and I-V characteristics were estimated.
