  • This research followed the major South Korean newspapers, Chosun, JoongAng, HanKyoreh and KyungHyang newspapers to study their relationship with advertisement - on how they use advertisement to what degree and which views they take, also looking into the quantity of advertisement. The results of analysis is as thus: first, the more advertised companies tended to have more news reports about them overall. Also, advertised companies were usually shown in positive light rather than a negative one. The most notable constructive commonality found in the positively advertised companies were that they were not usually introduced upfront through the title of the news article (or within the body of the article) but rather mentioned within the media frame. The reasons for this pattern in advertising is to make bias towards JoongAng which is obvious for pro companies, especially for the Chosun which is known for being neutral in most company matters even for the HanKyoreh, KyungHyang known for their usual negative attitude towards private companies.

  • We investigated the frames represented in the news media coverage in Korean daily newspapers during dismissal procedure of the director-general of the public service broadcaster, KBS. We analyzed 470 newspaper stories in the period surrounding the dismissal. The use of news frames in newspapers depended on the disposition of outlets, conservative or progressive. Conservative newspapers, ChoSun and DongA, described the dismissal of the director -general with a generally favorable or supportive view, but progressive outlets, Hankyoreh and KyeongHyang, reported more and non-favorable for the issue. Our results showed that conservative newspapers more often used episodic and cause for dismissal frame in the presentation of news, whereas progressive more often used thematic and media independence frames. Main frames commonly used in the news are the cause for dismissal, conflict, media independence, and regime maintenance, respectively, which are formed by 9 minor news frames. Conservative newspapers concentered on the cause attribution; management responsibility, conflicts, and dismissal procedures, but progressive focused on media independence and dismissal procedures. All newspapers selectively quoted groups, institutions and actors to enhance their messages and frames. Finally, there was significant difference between stories in each newspapers and the court's ruling for the dismissal.

  • There emerges a growing concern about South Korea's intellectual dependence on U.S. financial news media. However, those media's inherent relationship with national economic and financial interests has been poorly addressed. This paper thus attempts to identify such a strategic partnership between media and the government by analysing news coverages over four critical arena interwoven with U.S. dollar based financial system. For this purpose, total 152 news articles about Asia crisis, Asian Monetary Fund, Malaysia currency crisis and the new international financial architecture have been examined in terms of frame, attitude, cue-givers and discursive strategies. Research results indicate that not only have the media actively deferred to government leadership bur they have also acted as public diplomats in way of not hampering journalistic credibility. Hence, it is claimed that Korean society needs to formulate a model of media's strategic partnership with government at least in foreign policy arena, as well as to launch discursive strategies against nation-bound global news media.

This paper revealed the difference between journalists' intention and public's perception about news by analyzing the frequency and connectivity of news with framing and public's interest through semantic network analysis and explored the policy characteristics and innovation task. The result of analysis, news on lottery game mainly has been reported social issue related with win such as 'winning number', 'prize money', 'suspicion of manipulation' and etc. News on sports betting has been reported mandatory information related with business project and illegal site such as 'bidding', 'illegal site', 'sales target' and etc. News about horse racing has been reported the information about the business advertisement such as 'online race track' and 'promotion'. Lastly, casino related news has been reported 'major information' such as illegality', 'gambling place' and 'foreigner'. As a result of times series analysis, news about casino in the 1990s, news about lottery in the 2000s and news about horse racing in 2010s have been increased. Public's interest also has been moved to 'business scandal', 'winning game', 'citizens' campaign' and etc. Gambling related news has been classified by four types, 1. advertising publicity(horse racing), 2. mandatory information(sports betting), 3. social issue(public agenda, lottery), 4. major information(casino). We could get the insight that news can be formed a public agenda, when news is reported as a social issue with high frequency and public's interest like lottery related news.

  • Domestic broadcasting companies are obliged to provide the disaster information quickly to protect the public from the disaster, and people can prepare the disaster. Especially, Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) has a duty to deliver disaster news more quickly and accurately than other broadcasting companies because it is designated as a host broadcaster for disaster broadcasting services in accordance with Article 43 of the Broadcasting Act. This study examined how the KBS deals with social disaster news related to Zika virus, and evaluated whether they used the frames in a timely manner to help people prepare a disaster. Based on the results of this analysis, this study tried to suggest practical implications for measures to improve the efficiency and reliability of disaster news report.

  • During the unprecedented COVID-19 outbreak, the public's information needs created an environment where they overwhelmingly consume information on the chronic disease. Given that news media affect the public's emotional well-being, the pandemic situation highlights the importance of paying particular attention to how news stories frame their coverage. In this study, COVID-19 news speech emotion from mainstream broadcasters in South Korea and the United States (US) were analyzed using convolutional neural networks. Results showed that neutrality was detected across broadcasters. However, emotions such as sadness and anger were also detected. This was evident in Korean broadcasters, whereas those emotions were not detected in the US broadcasters. This is the first quantitative vocal emotion analysis of COVID-19 news speech. Overall, our findings provide new insight into news emotion analysis and have broad implications for better understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study period lasted for eight months beginning in November 2020 when the development of the Covid-19 vaccine was in progress until June 2021. Set-up as research subjects were the Chosun Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo and Hankyoreh according to their public confidence rankings and number of readers. The analysis method used structured topic Modeling (STM) and semantic network analysis. As a result, based on a clear cluster of word structures and a central analysis value, a total of 64 relevant frames, 16 for each news company, were gathered. In the third phase a comparative analysis of the four news companies was carried out to verify the organizational degree of the frames and substantial differences.

Despite that the NGOs and Korean government keep trying to reform the market and structure of the newspapers, the targeted newspapers argue that they are unjustly accused of the dominance of the press market made by the readers' choice. Using frame analysis and discourse analysis, this study analyzed the news coverage on the press reform for 6 months and revealed that these major newspapers presumed to be targeted were totally challenging against the press reform by means of flaming of news and using news discourse. The ways of challenge were, firstly they appealed to the readers that the press reform is the press suppress so that they have to fight against this unacceptable pressure. And secondly, they report the news selectively for their own interests by elaborating, magnifying, or reducing the facts. Thirdly, they attack the government policies and major figures leading the press reform by letting the outside columnists favorable to their own standing point. And finally, they conduct the poll on and off and report what they want according to their self interests.

  • In this paper, we present a new anchor shot detection system which is a core step of the preprocessing process for the news video analysis. The proposed system is composed of four modules and operates sequentially: 1) skin color detection module for reducing the candidate face regions; 2) face detection module for finding the key-frames with a facial data; 3) vector representation module for the key-frame images using a non-negative matrix factorization; 4) anchor shot detection module using a support vector data description. According to our computer experiments, the proposed system shows not only the comparable accuracy to the recent other results, but also more faster detection rate than others.
