Characteristics of Volatile Organic Compounds from Newly Produced Building - Apartment House

  • Building materials emit high concentration volatile organic compounds(VOCs), formaldehyde(HCHO) and other hazardous air pollutants(HAPs) to indoor environment. Average value of VOCs and HCHO emission concentration were $3,770\;{\mu}g/m^3$, $430\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in newly buildings, respectively. VOCs and HCHO emission characteristic are high emission level at initial time and decreased in course of time.

일본 신축주택의 실내 VOC의 실태와 농도추이 특성에 의한 유형별 대표물질선정 (Selection on Representative Compound According to the Characteristics of the Change of VOC Concentration Indoor from the Newly Built House in Japan)

  • The VOC, which were detected from the newly built house, exist as a certain number of types according to the characteristics of the change of VOC concentration indoors. In this paper, we aim to divide the VOC into types so that those with similar characteristics of the transition of their concentration are in the same group and select the representative compound according to each classified type, and to verify these processes statistically in order to verify and propose new method creating the representing index of the VOC concentration in indoor which is used in evaluation of the degree of air pollution. As a result, the characteristic of the change of VOC concentration in the indoor can be divided into three types. Type1; the group in which the concentration is relatively high right after the completion of the house, and then decreases rapidly. Type2; the group in which the concentration is relatively low right after the completion of the house, and then although it shows the tendency of increasing and decreasing repeatedly, it decreases overall. Type3 is the group, which show only one peak at a certain time during the measuring period. As the method like this was verified to have the statistical significance, the Ethylbenzene was selected as the representative compound of type1, and Styrene was selected as that of type2. Moreover, if considering transition of the VOC from the point of similarity, the research method of making the classification and the selection of the representative compound in this study are said to be significant method.

실물실험을 통한 개별 VOC의 농도변화에 관한 연구 (A Study on Concentration Change of Volatile Organic Compounds; VOCs by using Mock-up Test)

  • Recently, due to the airtightness of buildings or the misuse of building materials, we have been witness SHS (Sick House Syndrome) which can have bad influences on the resident in an existing apartment house as well as newly constructed apartment house start to attract public attention. As a result of this situation, we went to restrict the TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compound) and formaldehyde. But these guidelines concentrated on only TVOC although TVOC are consist of many individual VOC. Therefore, in this study, we will look about concentration change of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) by using Mock-up test. As result of test, the concentration of four individual VOC (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Styrene) showed quitely low level after 7 days. On the other hand the concentration of Xylene and formaldehyde showed low level after 14 days.

노년층의 기술수용성향과 홈오토메이션 시스템에 대한 요구도 (Older People's Innovativeness toward Technologies and Demand of Home Automation System)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the factors which affect older people's innovativeness toward technologies and factors which affect their demand of home automation system. The study collected data from 289 persons who are 50 years and older with experience living in an apartment currently or past. Innovativeness toward technologies of respondents were low level and the significant factors which affected their innovativeness were age, education, employment, marital status, current housing types, health status of self and spouse, consideration of home automation system for a newly-moved house. Education, employment types, consideration of home automation system for a newly-moved house, and plan for moving were the major factors which affect demand of home automation system. Also, older people's innovativeness toward technologies was the most important factor which affected demand of home automation system. Th results of this study explained that high technologies which are adopted in residential environment should be considered target consumers' abilities and attitudes for acceptance toward new ideas. Especially, for older consumers, various ideas to expand their understanding of new technologies should be developed and the positive effect of technologies to increase the quality of their later life should be educated.

대학생이 희망하는 신혼부부주택의 조건 (The desire of undergraduate and postgraduate students newly married housing requirements)

  • With the rise in national GNP, there has been a surge in people requiring adequate housing. The most who are in need of adequate housing are fresh graduates who have entered the job market, and newly-wed couples. Given the current economic condition it is difficult for young people and newly-wed couples to find reasonably affordable accommodations. In response to this, the government is trying to formulate a new policy, with the aim of helping young married couples find decent accommodation in response to the housing shortage. Research was performed last July with the aim of looking at the differences between the newlyweds' expectation of the idealistic housing and conditions. Questionnaires were distributed to undergraduate and postgraduate research students to find out their requirements. The questionnaire investigated the social background and the condition of the inhabited area; housing type internal facilities; the space required for housing; interior finishing, and storage facilities. The survey results were analyzed using SPSS and found that the design of small residential areas, the space requirements of more diversified individualized areas were the most important concerns for undergraduate and postgraduate research students. From the study we hope this will form a foundation for the design of the future housing social stratum. It is hoped that the current results and conclusions of this survey will be of help for the korean community to provide a direction and a positive input in the future design of newly married housing.

전라남도 한옥보존마을 및 행복마을 한옥의 평면유형에 관한 연구 (Analysis on Plan types of Hanok in Hanok Conservation Village and Happy Village, Jeollanam-do)

  • This study examines and analyzes plan of Hanok which has been newly built at rural areas in Jeollanam-do province and is to present the direction in setting architectural plan of Hanok at rural areas. For the purpose of this study, analyzed the types of Hanok based on the topological characteristics of main house and main spaces including room, living room and kitchen. Five types of 105 Hanoks, type-I, type-II, type-III, type-IV and type-V were drawn on the based of the shape of main house and topological characteristics of main rooms including room, living room and kitchen. Type-I had spatial composition of main rooms in a row and showed similar shape of main house with traditional private houses in Honam region, type-II showed placement of living room in center and main rooms beside it, type-III showed change of type-II and placed kitchen and annex behind living room and similar plan composition with type-III and secured the area of living room and rooms by enlarging the number of rooms, and type-V had the shape of main house with twisted form and placed living room in the center and each room at side or twisted part to ensure openness of living room.

한국 근.현대 주택작품에서 나타나는 전통성 해석의 시대적 경향 (Tendency of Traditional Character in Korean Modern House Architecture as an Art Work)

  • Since modernization period thru Japanese colonial era the modern architect began to play a important role for Korean housing architecture. So called 'House as an Art Work', detached houses by prominent architects, belong to a meaningful sector in Korean modern housing architecture. The harmony with tradition was always big issue for such works. This study aims to understand how paradigms for tradition were interpreted with the changes of the time. The analysis showed various tryout by architects, that concretize traditional characteristics in their work. For example, traditional lifestyle were clearly reflected in the floorplan during 30's and 40's. In the 70's building mass and formative roof design were emphasized to present traditional image. As well as it represented primitive esthetic and vernacular decoration. In addition, expressive tendency, that demonstrates korean sentiment through material and its texture, got a preference. Since latter half of 80's some traditional architectural elements were modernized and space characteristics were newly created from acculturation. Furthermore the philosophy of "Subdivision of building wings and Emptiness" follows this trend. This type made a courtyard and connected articulated building masses each other. "Sympathy with Nature" were most essential for a traditional houses in contrast with western architecture. Many architects today make various method to bring nature into interior space and to contemplate nature In the house. Such kinds of adaptation to tradition could be understood as a unique process to manifest identity of Korean modern houses.

입주전 신축공동주택의 봄철 TVOC, HCHO농도 실태조사에 관한 연구 (A study on the field measurement of the TVOC and HCHO concentration in the newly constructed apartment houses in spring seasons)

  • This study aims to present the fundamental strategies for improving the Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) in newly-constructed apartment buildings. To investigate the concentration of indoor air pollutants such as HCHO and VOCs and the field measurement were conducted. According to the field measurement of 60 new houses in spring season, the concentration of HCHO in about 20% were higher the IAQ standards.
