Experimentally Evaluation of a Liquid Pool Spreading Model with Continuous Release (연속누출을 가지는 액체 풀 확산 모델의 실험적 평가)

  • In this study, an experimental investigation is performed for evaluation of a liquid pool spreading model with continuous release. The model considered in this study was developed based on a concept which means that the liquid pool spreading is governed by a balance between an inertia force from gravity and a frictional force from friction with the ground under the whole base of the liquid pool. For evaluation of the model, experimental study is performed. Experimental apparatus is setup for measuring release rate, spreading velocity, and evaporation rate from a liquid pool. The experimental results are compared with results from the model. By applying release and evaporation rates obtained from experiments to solving the model, liquid pool radius variation according to time can be obtained. For evaluation of an effect of friction force in the spreading model, results obtained from the models with and without the friction force are compared with those obtained from the experiments. As a result, it is shown that there exists a large deviation between the results obtained from the model without the friction force and the experimental results. On the other hand, the tendency of liquid pool radius variation according to time is similar between the results obtained from the model without the friction force and the experimental results.

Contact Stress Analysis of Artificial Hip Joints Using Finite Element Method (유한요소법을 이용한 인공 고관절의 접촉응력 해석에 관한 연구)

  • The modern orthopaedics frequently uses the total hip replacement in the artificial hip joint. The wear in this joint requires a re-replacement of hip joints because it is under the severe load and friction conditions. To solve these problems the previous studies have been mainly focussed on the development of new materials. The research of new materials, however, needs much time and effort since it should be experimented for its bio-compatibility, friction, and wear characteristics. To reduce the work, in this study, the finite element analysis is applied to find new combinations of bio-materials in the total hip replacement which has the excellent contact characteristics. A non-linear FEM program MARC with 5-node axisymmetric element was used for analyzing the contact stresses between the hip joints. The computed results show that in case of acetabulum UHMWP has good characteristics, in femoral head, $Al_2O_3$, and in stem, Ti6Al4V.

  • Friction stir welding(FSW) was developed as a new solid state welding technique by The Welding Institute (TWI). On the basis of FSW, a new processing technique, friction stir processing (FSP), has recently been developed. FSP has been applied to cast aluminum alloy to modify the microstructure to enhance mechanical characteristic. FSP is a new solid state processing technique for microstructural modification in metallic materials. FSP has been applied to aluminum alloy to modify the microstructure to enhance mechanical characteristic. In this study, we investigated optimum condition friction stir processing with the evaluation of mechanical characteristic for 5456-H116 Al alloy. The mechanical characteristics of base metal similar with in 15 mm/min, 250 RPM with full screw probe. This condition is concluded that optimum friction stir processing condition. The result of this investigation will be able to application for repair of welding part for aluminum ship.

  • Friction stir welding and friction stir processing is a new solid state processing technique for ioining and micro..structural modification in metallic materials. It has been applied not only joining for light metals but also modification of the microstructure to enhance mechanical properties. In thin study, we investigated the mechanical properties for applied friction stir welding and processing under various parameters such as probe diameter, probe type, traveling speed and rotating speed for 5456-H116 AI allov. As a result of experiments, optimum condition of friction stir welding is traveling speed of 15mm/min, rotating speed of 500RPM at 6mm diameter probe. Moreover, in the case of friction stir processing, the optimum condition is traveling speed of 15mm/min, rotating speed of 250RPM at full screw probe. As above mentioned, the mechanical characteristics enhanced with the decreasing of traveling speed and the increasing of friction areas because of plastic flow due to high friction heat. These result can be used as reference data for ship repairment.

  • Laser surface texturing (LST), a surface engineering modification, has been considered as one of the new processes used to improve tribological characteristics of materials by creating artificially patterned microstructure on the contact surface of mechanical components. In LST technology, the laser is optimized to obtain or manufacture the dimples with maximum precision. The micro-dimples reduce the coefficients of friction and also improve the wear resistance of materials. This study investigates the effect of dimple density is investigated. For this purpose, a ball-on-disc type tester is used with AISI 52100 bearing steel as the test material. Discs are textured with a 5% and 10% dimple density. Experimental work is performed with normal loads of 5 N, 10 N, and 15 N under a fixed speed of 150 rpm at room temperature. The effect of the textured surface is compared to that of the untextured one. Experimental results show that the textured surface yields lower friction coefficients compared to those of untextured surfaces. Specifically, the 10% dimple density textured surface shows better friction reduction behavior than the 5% dimple density textured sample, and has an 18% improvement in friction reduction compared with the untextured samples. Microscopic observation using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the major friction mechanisms of the AISI 52100 bearing steel are adhesion, plastic deformation, and ploughing.

  • In this paper, we report a new manufacturing method for friction reduction using micro-AAJ (abrasive air-jet) machining. AAJ machining employs compressed air to accelerate a jet of high-speed particles to mechanically machine features, including micro-channels and micro-holes, into glass, metal, or polymer substrates for use in microfluidics, MEMS (micro electromechanical systems). And we introduce the micro-AAJ machining system, which consists of a micro-AAJ nozzle and a five-axis positioning system. Various micro-AAJ nozzles can be used, depending on the required surface structure, and three-dimensional machining is possible. We machined samples under six different conditions and describe machining results obtained while using it. We also measured the coefficient of friction of micro-textured surfaces. We report the coefficient of friction of micro-textured surfaces patterned using micro-AAJ machining for engine piston ring.

Development of a Measuring Device for Coefficient of Friction between Connection Parts in Vehicle Head Lamps (자동차 헤드램프내 체결부품사이의 마찰계수 실험장치 개발)

  • When slipping occurs between two materials, the coefficients of friction must be considered because these values determine the overall efficiency of the machine or slip characteristics. Therefore, it is important to find the coefficient of friction between two materials. This paper focuses on obtaining the coefficient of friction between an aiming bolt and a retainer located in the headlamps of a vehicle. This bolt supports the headlamp, and if the bolt is loosened by external vibration, the angle of the light will change and block the vision of pedestrians or other drivers. In order to study these situations, the coefficient of friction between aiming bolts and retainers needs to be measured. In addition, the coefficient of friction of materials used in the headlamp should be obtained. To determine these two factors, a new device is designed for two cases: surface-surface contact and surface-line contact. To increase reliability of the results, the device is designed using an air-bearing stage which uses compressed air as lubricant to eliminate the friction of the stage itself. Experiments were carried out by applying various vertical forces, and the results show that the coefficient of friction can be measured consistently. The procedure for designing the device and the results are discussed.

A Study on Joining of Aluminum and Advanced High Strength Steel Using Friction Stir Hole Clinching (마찰교반 홀 클린칭을 이용한 알루미늄과 고장력강의 접합에 관한 연구)

  • In recent years, dissimilar materials such as aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and advanced high strength steel are widely used in automotive body due to environment concerns and fuel consumption. Therefore, joining technology is important for assembling components made of dissimilar materials. In this study, friction stir hole clinching (FSHC) was proposed as a new mechanical joining method to join dissimilar materials. This process stirs and heats the upper sheet, forming mechanical interlocking with the lower sheet. The feasibility of this FSHC process was verified by comparing cross-section of joint in FSHC and hole clinching process under the same processing condition. Taguchi method was also applied to the FSHC process to estimate the effect of process parameters on joint strength and obtain optimal combination of process parameters. Joint strength of FSHC with optimal process condition was compared to that of FSHC with initial process condition as well as that of hole clinching with optimal process condition. Results showed that the FSHC process was useful for joining dissimilar materials, even if the formability of materials was low.

  • Friction stir spot welding (FSSW), developed based on principle of friction stir welding, has been paid attention as a new solid-state spot welding process. Since FSSW can produce high-quality weld in Al alloys more easily than resistance spot welding, this process has been already used for construction of Al components in the automotive industries. Despite the large industrial interests in FSSW, fundamental knowledge on welding phenomena of this process has not been fully understood. In this study, FSSW phenomena, such as the consolidation mechanism, the microstructural evolution and the material flow, were examined in Al alloy 6061. This study clarified that the elliptical zone found in the vicinity of the pin hole on the cross section was characterized by the initially lapped surface of two sheets. Moreover, the following material flow was proposed; capture of the upper material with the threads on the pin surface, spiral flow along the tool rotation, and then release at the tip of the pin.
