The ratio of the aged population over 65 in Korea comprises 5.7% of the total population in 1995, and 7.1% in 2001, and it is expected that it will be 14% in year 2023. Also, owing to the appearance of various layers of the aged, it is necessary to prepare various programs and facilities for the aged who are healthy and economically capable in order for them to spend their life in an abundant and rewarded way. Andthere is a rising necessity not only to recognize the value of existence for the existing elderly welfare facilities but to prepare new elderly welfare facilities considering comprehensive elderly welfare as well. Especially, even though elderly welfare centers continue to provide for the aged both in a low-income class and a common class various service programs and activity programs, there still is a poor structure in terms of spatial dimension in detail to comply the service. Accordingly, we believe that it is necessary to have a comparative study on elderly welfare centers in Japan as elderly welfare facility that advances about 30 years ahead. For this purpose, this study compared the spatial structures of application programs according to facility regulations and their gross spatial classification focusing on elderly welfare centers in Japan and those of Korea. Based on this, this study intends to present basic materials for interior space planning when establishing elderly welfare centers founded on space dimension and structure along with the gross space in elderly welfare centers in Korea in the future.

Recently, In Korea, diverse elderly facilities have increased by geometric progression cope with rapidly aging society. But, there haven't been enough systematic understanding about elderly housing. To approach the concept of elderly housing, the clear theory of its definition and types should be established. Thus, the purpose of this study is to set up the concept of elderly housing and clear definition, and to recreate criteria fit our situation. This study was proceeded by contents analysis of elderly housing environment in prior research. First, we understand the use of terms about elderly housing in references and redefine. Then, analyze the cases of categorizations in developed countries. Finally, the research point out current problems and make criteria in housing environmental aspects. This study leads new perspective to consist synthetic services according to special conditions of elderly, far from the economical point of view. It will contribute to understand elderly housing designing aging friendly environment.

Though there are high needs for the development of elderly house in rural area, there is not carried out at all. So, the purpose of this study is to provide the criteria to develop the architectural mode of elderly elderly house in rural area. The facts found in this study can be summarized as follows ; The elderly house in rural area. is increasingly being located near town. This is derived from the fact that the brand-new generation of the aged has the great likelihood to participate in social activities. So, Paid Elderly Home needs to be developed in town or suburbs. Medical facilities are indispensable in elderly house in rural area. So it is necessary that elderly house in rural area is closely connected with hospital and medical treatments. Inmates want small-sized rooms, thus one room shaped home should be built for these demands. And the flexibility of the spaces which can make two units into one should be applied to the plan and the design of the elderly house in rural area. The Home's medical facilities should be planned by considering the relationship with the Hospital. Factors for architectural planning of elderly house in rural area is movement pattern, safety facilities, and preferred subsidiary facilities through considering the physical and psychological characteristics.

In Japan, a new nursing insurance system was enforced in April 2000, where premiums were paid according to the level of necessary care. Our project, Nutrition Care and Management(NCM) for the elderly was started in 1995, funded by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan. The NCM project was to provide appropriate nutrition care for the elderly and to see that it effectively functions as part of the health care services. There were 4 stages to the project : the first stage was to find out the PEM status among the elderly patients in hospital and home-care settings in Japan. The 2nd stage was to develop and evaluate nutritional assessment methods, anthropometry, resting energy expenditure measuring methods using of portable indirect calorimeter, and the convenient protein energy intake assessment methods, etc. for the elderly patients with PEM risk. The 3rd stage was to examine the effectiveness of the nutrition care plan induced of protein energy supplement and team care in improving nutrition among the elderly patients. The last stage was to develop the NCM set for the elderly patient based on the past three years of scientific evidence. it is expected that the NCM system for the elderly will provide adequate nutritional care management, improve the elderly care environment and create effective resource management.

The aged population increasing rapidly, the population rate of over 65 years old was over 7.5% in 2000 in Korea. It means that Korea is aging society. But, the aged welfare accommodation are still insufficient and more facilities accommodating the aged should be built. This situations made a new concept of silver town of the welfare facility for the aged. The purpose of this study was to find the difference of preferences about silver town between elderly group and pre-elderly group in Chungseo province. Focused on housing type and space composition of silver town, the results of this study will provide some useful information for the development of silver town and for further studies. It is very important to refer to the preference about silver town of elderly group and pre-elderly group for planing the silver town. Main results of this study showed that silver town was the most preferable elderly housing alternative for elderly group. And silver town should be provided health care center for elderly group.

As baby boomer generations become older, these "New-age elderly" have emerged as an important consumer segment for apparel products. These young-minded elderly have positive attitudes to technology and enjoy many of high technology tool in their everyday life, which signals a huge market potential for internet apparel retailing targeting these elderly consumers. Internet apparel businesses are required to provide various consumer information to its consumers to facilitate the decision making process. For elderly consumers, who might have different shopping behaviors from the younger consumer segments, different kinds of information with higher quality would be required. As a preliminary step to develop internet consumer information model for elderly consumers, this study seeks to investigate the current practice of information offerings of internet apparel businesses for elderly consumers. Ten internet sites carrying apparel products for elderly consumers were selected and analyzed their offerings of consumer information by five researchers. This study found that internet apparel businesses targeting elderly consumers were still small-sized and lack of sophisticated technology to support these elderly consumers. Most web sites provided basic product information and service information but not fashion and trend related information. Managerial implications were discussed.

Due to the shortage of elderly care services in urban areas, multi-functional welfare facilities are proven to be very effective for delivering various service needs of elderly in Japan. Introduction of new longterm care policy for elderly in Korea would change many aspects of elderly care service facilities. Especially elderly home care services like adult daycare centers will expand drastically after beginning of elderly longterm care insurance. The purpose of this research is to study and analyze multi-functional welfare facilities in Japan focusing on the types of day service in those facilities. Planning of daycare centers in multi-functional welfare facilities for the elderly can be classified to 8 types. Those types are daycare centers with senior housing, longterm care insurance facilities, senior centers, small multi-function facility, medical facilities, educational facilities, community facilities and general housing projects. Each type has different benefits for the networking of services for the elderly. Design of daycare centers in multi-functional welfare facilities have distinctive features in entrance and user approach, space allocation and circulation planning. The study of daycare centers and multi-function planning should be followed to make better home care environments for the elderly in Korea.

A rural area of Korea is inferior compare to urban areas in physical settlements, and an elderly people of the inhabitant increased and it is not easy to see young people in a rural villages. It comes from income difference between industrial type and area and leaving rural area are the accelerated and repeated, and resident who live in rural area after twenty to thirty years can be an elderly society A settlement of rural area is needed settlement rehabilitation for elderly society as follows first, a model development and public support of settlement rehabilitation for rural areas. Second, village remodeling of farming village for elderly are discussed. The rehabilitate rural villages is expected an immigration from urban area which over crowding, and eco tour as new industry.

The purpose of this study was to discuss leisure program to guarantee the leisure right of the elderly. In order to study on the change of leisure perspective and the existence of leisure need, it has based on the leisure program of the elderly in welfare institutions. It was suggested that; The contents of leisure program of the elderly would contain the change of leisure perspective, discovery of leisure need, improvement of the elderly's function(physical health, psychological satisfaction, and social relations), and development of new interest. In specific context, it was varied from the conditions and environments(space or equipment) in each institutes.
