  • The Maori people were early New Zealand settlers of Polynesian descent. The incidence of non-infectious diseases appears to have been low in these people, perhaps in part due to the presence of protective chemical constituents within their food plant supply. Three of the tropical crops they introduced are still eaten here today: the sweet potato of kumara (Ipomoea batatas), the taro (Colocasia esculenta) and the cabbage tree or ti (Cordyline terminalis).(omitted)

  • Le Corbusier planned and began to build space of new architecture expression around 1920s by connecting his theory of architecture of a great influence upon his creation of works with the puristic plincipes. The objective of this study consists in enguiring into the interior space of Le Corbusier's villa in 1920s and 1930s , especially into villa La Roche-Jeanneret , villa Terrasses, and villa Savoye. The constituents of the villas introduced new architectural concepts, including geometry, economics , and his new five architectural factors, and there appeared such phenomena as were shown in the paintings of the purist period, such as transparency, contrast , etc. We can see through this study, that Le Corbusider's architectural purpose is the realisation of his architectural and puristic. concepts.

  • Two new compounds lanast-5,8-dien-3β-ol-27-oic acid-3β-D-glucopyranosyl (4'-1'')-10'',11''-dimethoxy anthracene (1), 2-methoxy-6-(n-nonacontan-5'',6''-dionyl)-11-hydroxy-13-methyl-11β-D-rhamnopyranoside anthracene (2) have been isolated from the hairy root cultures of Catharanthus roseus. Their structures have been elucidated with the help of 500 MHz NMR using one- and two-dimensional NMR in combination with IR, EI/MS, FAB/MS and HRFABMS spectroscopy.

  • A new simple solution for critical buckling of FG sandwich plates under axial and biaxial loads is presented using new modified power-law formulations. Both even and uneven distributions of porosity are taken into account in this study. Material properties of the sandwich plate faces are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a modified power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Equilibrium and stability equations of FG sandwich plate with various boundary conditions are derived using the higher-order shear deformation plate theory. The results reveal that the distribution shape of the porosity, the gradient index, loading type and functionally graded layers thickness have significant influence on the buckling response of functionally graded sandwich plates.

  • As part of our continued study on the chemical constituents of Willughbeia edulis stems, a new dimeric lignan named edulignan (1) was isolated from its EtOAc-soluble extract. Based on NMR spectroscopic interpretation, the planar structure of 1 has been suggested to have two 2-substituted 4-chromanone subunits with different stereochemical configurations. In addition, the MS/MS analysis of the products obtained by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of 1 was supportive of its structure. Unfornatually, the new compound 1 did not show 𝛼-glucosidase inhibitory activity with an IC50 value > 250 𝜇M.

  • Insampaedoksan (IS) is the decoction of medicinal herbs, which was commonly used for anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic in the Korean traditional medicine (KTM). Several studies on improving efficiency or searching new efficiency by fermenting traditional herbal medicines are recently in progress. The bioconversion has been conducted on IS using various bacteria. Liquiritin, ferulic acid, hesperidin, liquiritigenin, and glycyrrhizin in IS before and after fermented IS were simultaneously analyzed. These compounds were qualitatively analyzed and quantitatively analyzed using the HPLC-DAD system. The identifications of liquiritin, ferulic acid, hesperidin, liquiritigenin and glycyrrhizin were achieved by comparing the HPLC retention time ($R_t$) and the UV absorption of five pure compounds in the IS. As a result, the increased constituents were identified to be liquiritin, liquiritigenin and glycyrrhizin, while the decreased constituent was ferulic acid and the constituent of hesperidin was similar to before and after fermentation. Insampeadock-san fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum KFRI 144 exhibited the most remarkable changes in all of fermentation.

  • Quantitative evaluation was performed on the microstructure of flux-cored arc(FCA) weld metal using a method blown as IIW scheme. It was mainly intended to figure out any practical difficulties in applying this method and also to provide the consumable makers with basic guide line in developing FCA welding consumables far better properties. Assessment of the experimental results showed IIW scheme was quite reliable in the low heat input range where the acicular ferrite was a major constituent. However, in the high heat input range, some scatter was noticed as the other phases like grain boundary ferrite and Widmansttaten ferrite become dominant. It implies that the accuracy of IIW scheme depends on the faction of microstructural constituents and it become worse as the fraction of latter two phases increases. This tendency was discussed in terms of the characteristics of those two phases. In addition, base line microstructure of rutile type FCA weld metal was addressed for developing new FCA welding consumables intended for higher heat input welding.

  • The studies were carried out to evaluate the constituents in the aerial part of Isodon excisus var. coreanus (Labiatae). From the aqueous fraction of methanol extract, compound I (${\alpha}$-[[3-(3, 4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1-oxo-2-propenyl]oxy]-3,4-dihydroxy-benzenepropanoic acid), compound II (9-methyl-dihydroferulic acid-4-O-.betha.-D-glucopyranosyl $(1{\rightarrow}2)$-${\alpha}$-L- rhamnopyranosyl (1.rarw.4)-.betha.-D-glucopyranoside), compound III (ent-7.alpha., 11${\alpha}$,15.betha.-trihydroxy-kaur-16-en-1-O-.betha.-D-glucopyranoside) and compound IV ($2{\alpha}$,3${\beta}$,$7{\alpha}$,23-tetrahydroxy-olean-12 -en-28-oic acid 28-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside) were isolated and identified on the basis of their physicochemical and spectroscopic evidences[IR, FAB(-)MS,$^{1}H-NMR,$$^{13}C-NMR,$$ HMQC$$^{1}H-^{1}H $COSY and HMBC (Heteronuclear Multiple Bond Connectivity)]. Especially, New compounds II and III were named Isodonin A and Isodonin B respectively.
