Polymer blends with a liquid crystalline polymer dispersed phase

  • Immiscible polymer blends containing a liquid crystalline polymer dispersed phase can be described by existing blend theories when the dispersed-phase droplets are large relative to the orientation correlation length ("domain size") of the LCP. There does not appear to be an interfacial contribution to the linear viscoelastic properties of the blend from droplets smaller than the correlation length. Polyester blends, where interfacial interactions occur between the LCP and the matrix, exhibit a reduction in viscosity to below the viscosity of either component at low shear rates, where the droplet morphology is spherical. These anomalies cannot be explained in the context of existing theory.ng theory.

Optimal design of wind-induced vibration control of tall buildings and high-rise structures

  • The most common used control device on tall buildings and high-rise structures is active and passive tuned mass damper (ATMD and TMD). The major advantages of ATMD and TMD are discussed. The existing installations of various passive/active control devices on real structures are listed. A set of parameter optimization methods is proposed to determine optimal parameters of passive tuned mass dampers under wind excitation. Simplified formulas for determining the optimal parameters are proposed so that the design of a TMD can be carried out easily. Optimal design of wind-induced vibration control of frame structures is investigated. A thirty-story tall building is used as an example to demonstrate the procedure and to verify the efficiency of ATMD and TMD with the optimal parameters.

Protective systems for high-technology facilities against microvibration and earthquake

  • Microvibration of high technology facilities, such as semiconductor plants and facilities with high precision equipments, due to nearby road and rail traffic has attracted considerable attention recently. In this paper, a preliminary study is conducted for the possible use of various protective systems and their performance for the reduction of microvibration. Simulation results indicate that passive base isolation systems, hybrid base isolation systems, passive floor isolation systems, and hybrid floor isolation systems are quite effective and practical. In particular, the performances of hybrid floor isolation systems are remarkable. Further, passive energy dissipation systems are not effective for the reduction of microvibration. Finally, the protections against both microvibration and earthquake are also investigated and presented.

  • The Korea built successfully e-Korea based on the best of internet infrastructure which was constructed in the world. Continually, Korea is constructing u-City for twenty-first century to enhance the quality of life and to grow up IT industrial. But there is no standard model for u-City because three main builders, central government, local autonomous entities, and communication carriers have respectively their objects, targets and domains. If u-City would be constructed by the common infrastructure for ubiquitous communication, it will be possible to provide any ubiquitous services and compatibility. And the communication infrastructure has to be reflected on the first stage of city planning to reduce high cost for u-City construction. This paper mentions firstly the ranges of communication infrastructure and shows how to construct it each range.

  • Horatio Alger's Ragged Dick (1868) betrays the economic and social system of nineteenth-century America through a self-reformative bootblack's quest for respectability. Being considered a space of constant danger, nineteenth-century New York City serves as a game board, and both visitors and residents of the city are supposed to avoid dangers while moving across its space. Dick Hunter, the juvenile protagonist of the novel, illustrates a street-child who starts his game of life from the backline of the game board. Continuing his quest for respectability, not only must he abandon the bad habits that he acquired as a street-child, but he also must avoid thieves and swindlers just like a tourist or like a player of nineteenth-century American board games. As Dick's social rise goes parallel with his movement in the city space, his entrance to a bank brings him the access to other respectable places, and a series of entrance turns him into a legitimate subject in the official system of the American society. While he continues his game of life successfully with the help of gentlemen patrons, in reality it is almost impossible for a disadvantaged player to escape the backline of the society. Thus, Dick's success story presents Alger's fantasy about the ideal economic system in which materials and persons are endlessly circulated.

  • Urban Informatics, the application of data science methodologies to the urban development and planning domain, has been increasingly adopted to improve the management and efficiency of cities. This paper introduces state of the art use cases in major cities including New York, London, Seoul and Amsterdam. It also introduces recent advances in using Big Data by multi-lateral institutions for poverty reduction, and startups utilizing open data initiatives to create new value and insights. Preliminary research performed on using Seoul's open data such as building permit data and health code violations are also introduced to demonstrate opportunities in this relatively new but promising area of research.

  • An undeniable reason for elevator accidents is relevant to diverse defects of elevator itself including a fatal flaw in its managing system. In order to prevent and control disastrous accidents, Korean government established brand new department, Ministry of Public Safety and Security(MPSS) in 2014. For the field of elevator accidents, MPSS, hoping to take the lead, tries to reform related law and statutes. At this time, it is worthwhile to review foreign country's precedent to find out its applicable lesson. This study specially focuses on introducing U.S. legal system dealing with elevator safety area from the viewpoint of stressing the identity of local governments such as state, county, city etc. This article mainly reviews these four points: i) a current state of safety code, guide, standard for elevator in U.S.A. ii) an elevator parts certification system under ASME A.17.1, iii) an elevator inspection system in New York City, iv) an implication of an elevator certification and inspection system in U.S.A. to us.

Exploring the Movements of Chinese Free Independent Travelers in the U.S.: A Social Network Analysis Approach

  • In a new age of smart tourism, free independent travelers (FITs) choose their travel routes in a more diversified and less predictable way with the aid of smart services. This paper focuses on the movements of Chinese outbound FITs in the U.S. in the year of 2018. 110 places to visit (destinations) extracted from 122 travel routes recommendations on Qyer.com, a major online travel community in China, are analyzed with social network analysis (SNA). Based on the results of SNA, employing degree centrality, eigenvector centrality, betweenness centrality, network visualization, and cluster diagram methods, some preferred cities and natural attractions outside city centers (i.e., New York City (NYC), Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Niagara Falls) are identified. Moreover, it is found that NYC in the East and Los Angeles in the West play a major role in the movements of Chinese FITs. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on tourist destination movements and provides valuable implications for smart service development in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Multistep Quantum Master Equation Theory for Response Functions in Four Wave Mixing Electronic Spectroscopy of Multichromophoric Macromolecules

  • This work provides an alternative derivation of third order response functions in four wave mixing spectroscopy of multichromophoric macromolecular systems considering only single exciton states. For the case of harmonic oscillator bath linearly and diagonally coupled to exciton states, closed form expressions showing all the explicit time dependences are derived. These expressions can provide more solid physical basis for understanding 2-dimensional electronic spectroscopy signals. For more general cases of system-bath coupling, the quantum master equation (QME) approach is employed for the derivation of multistep time evolution equations for Green function-like operators. Solution of these equations is feasible at the level of 2nd order non-Markovian QME, and the new approach can account for inter-exciton coupling, dephasing, relaxation, and non-Markovian effects in a consistent manner.

  • Beginning in the late 19th century, construction of skyscrapers spread throughout Chicago, New York City, and then the world as demand of space in buildings and increase of cost of land. With this change curtain wall systems have evolved to be more visually complex; these unique profiles of the skyscraper became powerful images and symbols of our cities. A curtain wall is defined as usually aluminum-framed wall containing in-fills of glass and metal panels. The framing is attached to the building structure and does not carry the floor or roof loads of the building.
