The Development of Simplified Ultrasonic CT System and Its Application to the Evaluation of Weld Metal

  • In this paper, as a new measurement method to estimate the change of material condition, the simplified ultrasonic CT system, which uses the information of three directions, that is, $90^{\circ}$, $+45^{\circ}C$and $-45^{\circ}C$ about inspection plane is proposed. Use of simplified CT system has two merits: Firstly, the measurement time is very short compared with general CT. Secondly, it can detect sensitively small defect in vertical or slant direction about inspection plane because the obtained image is CT image calculated from three directions. From these merits, this method can be considered as an effective method to evaluate material conditions. The basic performance of the proposed method was confirmed through several specimens with several simple defects. In order to confirm the applicability of actual NDT, several kinds of welded specimens are investigated. The result showed that the CT image obtained had good agreement with actual defect of specimens.

철도 레일의 결함 검출을 위한 비파괴탐상 기술 (Review of Non-Destructive Evaluation Technologies for Rail Inspection)

  • 철도 레일의 주기적인 탐상은 레일 결함으로 인해 발생할 수 있는 철도 중대사고를 미연에 방지할 수 있는, 철도 안전 유지의 중요한 요소 중 하나이다. 본 논문은 현재 철도 레일 탐상에 적용되고 있거나, 적용을 위해 연구 중인 비파괴탐상 기법들에 관해 기술하였다. 레일에 발생하는 결함 유형에 대해 우선 언급하였고, 레일 탐상에 가장 많이 적용되고 있는 압전형 탐촉자 기반의 초음파탐상 기술에 대해 정리하였다. 접촉식 초음파 레일 탐상 기술에 대한 대안으로서 연구 중이거나 시험 중인 비파괴탐상 기법들에 대해 기술하고, 각 기법 별로 레일의 표면 및 내부 결함 검출 가능 여부에 대해 살펴보았으며 여러 탐상 기법들에 대한 비교를 통해 향후 레일 탐상 기술 개발에 활용하고자 하였다.

  • The railway system requires safety and reliability of service of all railway vehicles. Suitable technical systems and working methods adapted to it, which meet the requirements on safety and good order of traffic, should be maintained. For detection of defects, non-destructive testing methods-which should be quick, reliable and cost-effective - are most often used. Since failure in railway wheelset can cause a disaster, regular inspection of defects in wheels and axles are mandatory. Ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission and eddy current testing method and so on regularly check railway wheelset in service. However, it is difficult to detect a crack initiation clearly with ultrasonic testing due to noise echoes. It is necessary to develop a non-destructive technique that is superior to conventional NDT techniques in order to ensure the safety of railway wheelset. In the present paper, the new NDT technique is applied to the detection of surface defects for railway wheelset. To detect the defects for railway wheelset, the sensor for defect detection is optimized and the tests are carried out with respect to surface and internal defects each other. The results show that the surface crack depth of 1.5 mm in press fitted axle and internal crack in wheel could be detected by using the new method. The ICFPD method is useful to detect the defect that initiated in railway wheelset.

  • The wheelsets are one of most important component: damages in wheel tread and press fitted axle are a significant cost for railway industry. Since failure in railway wheelset can cause a disaster, regular inspection of defects in wheels and axles are mandatory. Ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission and eddy current testing method and so on regularly check railway wheelset in service. However, it is difficult to use this method because of its high viscosity and because its sensitivity is affected by temperature. Also, due to noise echoes it is difficult to detect defects initiation clearly with ultrasonic testing. It is necessary to develop a non-destructive technique that is superior to conventional NDT techniques in order to ensure the safety of railway wheelset. In the present paper, the new NDT technique is applied to the detection of surface defects for railway wheelset. 적외선 열화상 메카니즘과 Flex-PDE 열해석을 통한 STS 결함구조물 진단 (STS Defect Structure Diagonis through the Infrared Thermography Mechanism and Flex-PDE Thermal Analysis)

  • This research aims to study the new paradigm of NDE measurement which allows the identification of defect locations and sizes of a certain structure by measuring its surface temperature after applying heat. STS which has a certain defect is applied by the heat of 70000W by a heater. Its difference of STS surface temperature is measured by using Infrared thermography. The estimated result of STS experiment and that of theoretical analysis of Flex-PDE are compared and analyzed to diagnose STS defect. Moreover, this study can save time and money and improve accuracy in contrast to the existing ultrasonic NDE experiment. In addition, the new paradigm of NDT/NDE by reverse-engineering will be valid if the data of thermal analysis and temperature distribution from the specifications of many materials is accumulated and verified.

음향방출법을 응용한 노즐 조립체의 구조건전성 평가 (Structural Integrity Evaluation of Nozzle Assembly using Acoustic Emission Technique)

  • 노즐 조립체에 대한 구조건전성을 평가하기 위한 구조강도시험에 음향방출 기법을 적용하였다. 이들 결과는 스트레인 및 변위 측정 결과와 비교 분석 되었으며, AE 기법의 신뢰도를 향상시키기 위하여 X-ray를 이용한 NDT 기법이 각 시험 전과 후에 실시되었다. 노즐 조립체에 대한 구조건전성 평가 시험에서 스트레인 및 변위 결과로는 구조물의 국부적인 균열 생성 현상을 정확하게 규명하기 곤란하였으나, AE 기법을 이용함으로써 균열들의 생성위치 및 하중을 정확하게 평가할 수 있었다. 이 시험을 통하여, 사출판과 노즐 조립체 사이에 존재한 간섭현상으로 인한 예기치 않은 하중에서 노즐 조립체의 복합재 내에 새로운 균열이 생성될 수 있음이 확인되었으며, 이들 균열은 구조물의 급격한 기능 상실의 원인이 될 수 있는 것으로 파악되었다.

지하매설 가스배관 내부검사용 로봇시스템 개발 (Development of Inpipe Inspection Robot System for Underground Gas Pipelines)

  • The robotic automation in NonDestructive Testing(NDT) is a promising field of research and it helps to expand the applications of NDT enormously. Especially, in the case of pipelines which are widely used in various industrial facilities, it is required to secure adequate ways of inspection in the usual maintenance activitites. In this paper, we present a robot system for inpipe inspection of underground urban gas pipelines. The robot is configured as an articulated structure like a snake with a tether cable. Two active driving vehicles are located in front and rear of the system, respectively and passive modules such as a NonDestructive Testing module and a control module are chained between the active vehicles. The proposed system has outstanding mobility by employing a new steering mechanism called Double Active Universal Joint, which makes it possible to cope with complicated configurations of underground pipelines. Characteristic features of the system are described and the construction of the system is briefly outlined.

  • The application of laser in pipelines was started from the base of using laser in nuclear facilities industries and power plants. Because laser can be delivered to a remote area without any difficulties, the application of laser in many industries can solve many difficulties from limitation of access in danger area and reduced the risks of workers. Therefore, we developed a new experimental technique to measure internal defects of pressure vessels with a combination of shearog-raphy and image processing technique. Conventional NDT methods have been taken relatively much time, money and manpower because of performing as the method of contact with objects to be inspected. But digital shearography is laser-based optical method which allows full-field observation of surface displacement derivatives. This method has many advantages in practical use, such as low sensitivity to environmental noise, simple optical configuration and real time mea-surement. In this paper, we find the optimum shearing magnitude with EFM and experiment and measured internal crack length of the pressure vessels at a real time and estimated the error of the results.

  • Establishment of a diagnosing technology for the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures due to salt contamination is urgent, but few analytical methods based on measured data obtained from concrete structures have been presented so far. Chloride penetration into concrete from sea water is generally understood and analysed as diffusion of chloride ion. This paper presents a new method of predicting chloride penetration into concrete based on diffusion theory. Also, it determines the duralility of Marine structure in service with the prediction of remaiing lifetime by the carvonation test.

  • Ultrasonic testing is one of the most useful NDT method for detection of microdefect in the opaque materials. Recently, many applications of the ultrasonic techniques have been extended widely in the new field like electron is and advanced materials. From the result of the experiment, we have hardly found out a crack in the internal parts of the resin and a delamination between chip and resin because of poor performance of the system.
