  • This study has identified human performance research issues associated with the implementation of new technology in nuclear power plants (NPPs). To identify the research issues, current industry developments and trends were evaluated in the areas of reactor technology, instrumentation and control technology, human-system integration technology, and human factors engineering (HFE) methods and tools. The issues were prioritized into four categories based on evaluations provided by 14 independent subject matter experts representing vendors, utilities, research organizations and regulators. Twenty issues were categorized into the top priority category. The study also identifies the priority of each issue and the rationale for those in the top priority category. The top priority issues were then organized into research program areas of: New Concepts of Operation using Multi-agent Teams, Human-system Interface Design, Complexity Issues in Advanced Systems, Operating Experience of New and Modernized Plants, and HFE Methods and Tools. The results can serve as input to the development of a long-term strategy and plan for addressing human performance in these areas to support the safe operation of new NPPs.

  • As software becomes more complex and its scope dramatically increases, the importance of research on developing methods for estimating software development efforts has been increased. Such accurate estimation has a prominent impact on the development projects. To develop accurate effort estimation models, many studies have been conducted among the academia and the practitioners. Out of the numerous methods, Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO) based on Line of Code (LOC), Regression Model based on Function Point (FP) were the most popular models in the past. As today's development environments are dynamically changing, these traditional methods do not work anymore. There is an impending need to develop an accurate estimation model which accommodates itself to the new environments. As a possible solution, this research proposes and evaluates an software development estimation model based on function points and neural networks.

  • Since software reuse and agile development methods are seen as ways to shorten development time and accept frequent requirement changes, respectively, there has been growing interest and research on integrating these approaches. But despite the increasing number of software companies which have successfully adopted agile development methods, there has been little research on reuse in agile methods to further improve productivity. In this paper, we identify a new type of reuse asset and propose a task factoring technique by taking advantage of iteration characteristics to support reuse in agile software development methods. In addition, we can apply the proposed technique and show prototyping of task reuse in a video rental application.

  • Purpose The development of new products in automobile parts industry plays an important role. Nowadays, automobile industry is one of the most important industries in the world, because automobile industry includes the industries of steel, machinery, electronic, etc. As a result, automobile industry embodies a country's level of development and competitiveness. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between team characteristics such as communication, familiarity, and contiguity, and team performance through TMS in the process of new products development in automobile parts industry. Design/Methodology/Approach Based on real phenomenon of Korean automobile parts industry, this study tried to figure out the influence of TMS between team members for new product development on team performance. Thus, this study adopts communication, familiarity and contiguity as antecedents, and TMS with specialty, credibility and coordination as a mediating variable, and adopts team performance as a dependent variable. The data of questionnaire were collected from team managers who belong to new product development team in automobile parts firms. 171 questionnaires as data unit of group level from 80 Korean automobile parts firms were collected using face-to-face interview methods. Findings This study proved empirically that the relationship between antecedents and TMS has a positive influence, and TMS also has a positive influence on team performance. This study provides the managers an insight that automobile parts companies should pay more attention to set up TMS in order to improve higher performance between their team members for new product development of automobile parts.

  • This paper discusses a new constitutive model called the high-rate brittle microplane (HRBM) model and also presents the details of a new software package called the Virtual Materials Laboratory (VML). The VML software package was developed to address the challenges of fitting complex material models such as the HRBM model to material property test data and to study the behavior of those models under a wide variety of stress- and strain-paths. VML employs Continuous Evolutionary Algorithms (CEA) in conjunction with gradient search methods to create automatic fitting algorithms to determine constitutive model parameters. The VML code is used to fit the new HRBM model to a well-characterized conventional strength concrete called WES5000. Finally, the ability of the new HRBM model to provide high-fidelity simulations of material property experiments is demonstrated by comparing HRBM simulations to laboratory material property data.

  • In soft grounds with deep bearing stratum, the PHC piles are generally joined by welding or prefabricated method. However, the existing joining methods have some problems in a side view of workability, quality and cost etc. In this study, a new joining method of PHC piles, which removes the problems of the existing methods, is developed. Static and dynamic load tests in fields as well as laboratory tests such as tensile and bending tests are conducted to investigate the workability and structural safety of PHC piles joined by the new method. The test results show that tensile and bending resistances of the joint part are higher than those of PHC pile itself. PHC piles with 400mm diameter are joined by the new method within 4 minutes while 25 minutes for welding method. Bearing capacities of the PHC piles joined by the new method are nearly the same as those of jointed PHC piles by welding method.

  • A new trenchless tunneling method using pressurizing support has been developed. As it overcomes shortcomings of conventional methods, it is applied to the field. The main concept of the new method is the pressurization system which, by means of pressurization bag between outer flange of steel ribs and excavated perimeter, applies the pressure corresponding to the magnitude of the relaxed earth pressure caused by excavation to the ground to prevent ground displacement. The stability of the support members and effect of displacement control of the new method were verified through several ways such as numerical tests and various model tests. The new method was applied to the construction of a 10.7 m wide, 7.9 m high and 85 m long road tunnel that passes under Yeongdong Expressway. By applying the new method, the tunnel construction was successfully completed in 13.5 months. It decreases the construction period to 35% compared to that of conventional methods, and ground displacement was almost negligible.

  • The sustainable operation and development of ports is a key industry for Korea's national economy. It is increasingly more important to resolve conflicts with local communities due to port environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution, noise and ecosystem destruction while securing port competitiveness through infrastructure expansion. In case of the Busan New Port development project in Korea, construction has been temporally suspended due to conflict with local fishermen over marine sand mining for construction. A primary reason for this is the absence and limitation of qualitative port environmental impact assessment methodologies in Korea. This includes the current investigation of fisheries damaged by ports. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to propose economic valuation methods for assessing environmental impacts that are essential for efficient port environmental management and for sustainable port operation and development in Korea. To do this, this study examines the overall port environmental problems and their effects (damages) through the analysis of environmental policies and case studies of domestic and overseas ports. Then economic valuation methods are suggested for total economic values (TEV) of damaged environmental goods and services. Among the proposed methods, Habitat Equivalency Analysis (HEA), as a more scientific data based method, was applied to estimate marine ecosystem service damages from the designation of Busan New Port Anchorages. Finally, based on the study results, more efficient port environmental management will be achieved through the institutional adoption of the proposed economic impact assessment methods for port environmental damages.
