  • The paper addresses the importance of redesigning strategies for resilient and sustainable regional economic development - by applying strategic approaches to free economic zones for the digital economy. The purpose of the paper is to provide a broad comparative perspective on developed versus developing country efforts to use free economic zone programs to enhance various economic and social objectives. First, the paper introduces the chronicle experiences of free economic zone programs in South Korea and mainland China - developed versus developing economies. The main results of the analysis indicate that (1) achieving the goals and objectives of free economic zones is challenging over time; (2) trying to upgrade the technical component, develop knowledge-based and eco-friendly new industries, or value-added to the economy through free economic zone policies is even challenging; and (3) incentives and other program-specific variables are highly context-specific and not structurally correlated with free economic zone performance. In addition, the paper shows that the initial conception of the role of free economic zones has undergone significant change as individual countries have tried to enhance the contributions and avoid damages from incorporating free economic zones into their development strategy respectively, over time.

  • Evaluating infrastructure's impact on social equity is an emerging area of research in transportation construction engineering. Transportation agencies have been trying to include sustainable development. The three components of sustainable development are environmental protection, social equity, and economic development. Although social equity is one of the essential components of sustainable development, most transportation agencies do not consider this component. The research publications in this area are limited. The principal objective of this study is to synthesize existing studies related to the impact of transportation infrastructures on social equity. This study will also identify social equity indicators, the correlation between social equity and transportation infrastructures and their services, and the impact of transportation infrastructures' on social equity. In addition, this study will identify current issues of social equity and will provide some recommendations. This synthesis study revealed that transportation infrastructures impacted social equity in various ways. Some effects are positive, such as new job creation on the market. Other effects are adverse, such as diminishing socio-economic and environmental degradation. Studies also showed that the current practices evaluated infrastructures' impact on a case-by-case basis. The authors recommend adopting a multi-disciplinary holistic for assessing infrastructure's effects on social equity. The multi-disciplinary fields of study include civil engineers, construction engineers/managers, public policy researchers, environmentalists, and social scientists.

  • Harnesses are used in a variety of industries, such as rescue operations, medicine, and entertainment. However, conventional harnesses have problems as they are uncomfortable to wear and causes continuous pain. Therefore, in this study, the load and pressure applied to the body in the flying state when using a conventional harness were measured in real time and the distribution change was observed. Load and pressure were measured using a modified corset harness, a pressure sensor, and a human mannequin to measure the maximum and average pressure on the waist. As a result, it was confirmed that the load concentrated on the waist in the flying state was 104 N, and the pressure was applied to the left and right sides was 800 kPa or greater. The pressure distribution showed a pressure of 3-45 kPa in 73% in all measurable pressures. The results of the load and pressure distribution are presented as basic data for improving the wearability and reducing the discomfort of harnesses in the future, aid in the development of a harnesses that can minimize discomfort for various activities, and increase the concentration on experiential activities. In addition, using the CLO 3D program, which is a 3D virtual wearing system, a harness was put on a virtual model, and the compression level was checked and compared with the actual pressure distribution. As a result of comparing the measured pressure values in the flying state with the clothing pressure wearing the harness in the CLO 3D program, the total pressure value was found to be about 68% of the actual measured value. This helps develop a harness that can minimize discomfort during activities by predicting the load and pressure on the body by first applying new designs to a virtual wearing system during development. These new harness patterns can solve the problems of conventional harnesses.

  • In recent years considerable progress has been made in the characterisation of surface finish in three dimensions, and in the development of protocols which can be used for international standardisation. Although the subject as it has currently developed has much further to go if the process of surface characterisation is to impact on manufacture, control and specification of the manufacturing process itself. Researchers in this important area are beginning to realise that if the subject is to have great impact on manufacturing industries, surface characterisation must be broadened to include measures of surface integrity of the component and in addition be related to the functional demands imposed on the surface. The functional demands being a requirement of the engineering situation in which the components are employed. If these three factors are considered simultaneously, surface characterisation, surface integrity and component function, then a new and important subject is born, the subject of the Engineered Surface. Part 1 of this paper attempts to draw together the elements which go together to create the subject, 'The Engineered Surface'. The paper presents a method by which this important subject can be developed to the benefit of manufacturing industries. The paper also discusses the importance of a co-ordinated approach to the subject and the way that information can be documented to eventually provide a useful atlas of controlling parameters which are essential for a range of material processing industries as they strive to meet the ever more stringent and cost effective requirements of the manufacture.

  • A new analytical model for the base current of Si/SiGe/Si heterojunction bipolar transistors(HBTs) has been developed. This model includes the hole injection current from the base to the emitter, and the recombination components in the space charge region(SCR) and the neutral base. Distinctly different from other models, this model includes the following effects on each base current component by using the boundary condition of the excess minority carrier concentration at SCR boundaries: the first is the effect of the parasitic potential barrier which is formed at the Si/SiGe collector-base heterojunction due to the dopant outdiffusion from the SiGe base to the adjacent Si collector, and the second is the Ge composition grading effect. The effectiveness of this model is confirmed by comparing the calculated result with the measured plot of the base current vs. the collector-base bias voltage for the ungraded HBT. The decreasing base current with the increasing the collector-base reverse bias voltage is successfully explained by this model without assuming the short-lifetime region close to the SiGe/Si collector-base junction, where a complete absence of dislocations is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM)[1].The recombination component in the neutral base region is shown to dominate other components even for HBTs with a thin base, due to the increased carrier storage in the vicinity of the parasitic potential barrier at collector-base heterojunction.

  • In this paper, a 50-kW high-efficiency modular fast charger for both electric vehicle (EV) and neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV) is proposed. The proposed fast charger consists of five 10-kW modules to achieve fault tolerance, ease of thermal management, and reduce component stress. Three-level topologies for both AC-DC and DC-DC converters are employed to use 600V MOSFET, resulting in ease of component selection and increase in switching frequency. The proposed three-level DC-DC converter with coupled inductor and its hybrid switching method can reduce the circulating current under wide output voltage range. A 50-kW prototype of the proposed fast charger was developed and tested to verify the validity of the proposed concept. Experimental results show that the proposed fast charger achieves a rated efficiency of 95.2% and a THD of less than 3%.

  • Stabilizing the operation of dual fuel diesel engines is very important. The shipbuilding industry is rapidly growing, but gear components requiring reliability are still imported from other countries. The reasoning for this is three-fold. Firstly, it is compulsory that all ships must use devices that meet the performance standards specified in the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the convention of MARine POLlution (MAPOL) to prevent pollution caused by ships. Secondly, most ships must comply with the ship classifications specified by ship owners. Therefore, it is specified that key engine gear components must be inspected and authorized for the quality and performance specified by the Ship Register Authority. Thirdly, it is essential that devices (engine gear) for human safety in ships comply with quality standards specified in the regulations and rules by the government. The Ship Register Authority's strict quality standards and approval requirements contribute to the reduction of motivation towards new investment and technology development by device component manufacturers. Therefore, this study aims to develop a method for using infrared thermography to examine gear reliability in order to ensure gear component reliability and national competitiveness in the global market.

  • This paper presents an implementation of the generator protective relay using Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) user defined component (UDC) model designed to facilitate the investigation and evaluation of protective relays. The UDC for RTDS is a convenient model that allows user to develop new component models and run them on the RTDS. The developed model has major features related to the development of six models such as distance, frequency, reverse power, volts per Hz, over voltage, and out-of-step relays. Also, the generator relay models have been used to support and enhance power engineering education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The developed model functions are verified and tested by both static test and dynamic test. The simulation results show the capabilities of the developed generator relay using RTDS UDC.

  • This study was conducted to obtain basic information on the development of new triticale cultivars with good quality and high productivity for soiling feed. Twelve cultivars introduced from Poland, Canada and two cultivars developed in Korea were planted in the experimental field at Ansong National University in 1995. Major growth traits and nutrient components for feed were measured and analyzed using principal component analysis and average linkage cluster analysis. 'Prego', 'Prag 46/3', and 'Clercal' were relatively high in forage yield. Most of forage nutrient contents except cellulose were higher in Prego, Clercal, and 'Cumulus' than other cultivars. Results of principal component analysis on 11 traits including forage yield and nutrient contents showed that 72.59% of total variation were explained by the first and second principal components. The Z$_1$ had high correlation with the contents of forage nutrient components and Z$_2$ with plant height, fresh, and dry weight. Fourteen cultivars were classified into 7 groups by multivariate analysis. Clercal and Prego in Group I could be useful source for the improvement of triticale as an important forage crop because they exhibited high productivity as well as high contents of nutrient components for feed.

  • One of the most prevalent knowledge about disk galaxies, which dominate the population of the local Universe, is that they consist of stellar structures with different kinematics, such as thin disk, bulge, and halo. Therefore, investigating when and how these components develop in a galaxy is the key to understanding the evolution of galaxies. Using the NewHorizon simulation, we can resolve the detailed structures of galaxies, in the field environment, from the early Universe where star formation and mergers were most active. We first decompose stellar particles in a galaxy into a disk and a dispersion-dominated, spheroidal, component based on their orbits and then see how these components evolve in terms of mass and structure. At high redshift z~3, galaxies are mostly dispersion-dominated as stars are formed misaligned with the galactic rotational axis. At z=1~2, massive galaxies start to dominantly form disk stars, while less massive galaxies do much later. Furthermore, massive galaxies are forming thinner and larger disks with time, and the preexistent disks are heated or even disrupted to become a part of dispersion-dominated component. Thus, the mass growth of spheroidal components at later epochs is dominated by disrupted stars with disk origins and accreted stars at large radii.
