For the high power variable speed applications, the DCTLI(diode clamped three-level inverter) have been widely used. This paper describes the analysis of the neutral point current of the DCTLI and the improved space vector-based PWM strategy considering the switching frequency of power devices, that minimizes the fluctuation of the neutral point current in spite of high modulation index region and low power factor. It contributes to decrease the capacitance of dc-link capacitor bank and to increase the neutral point voltage controllable region. Especially, even if second (or even) order harmonic is induced in load current (at this situation, is was investigated that the general control method can not suppress the neutral point voltage variation), this PWM can provide effective control method to suppress the neutral point voltage variation. Various simulation results by means of Matlab/Simulation are presented to verify the proposed PWM.
An optimized space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) method with common mode voltage elimination and neutral point potential balancing is proposed for an open-end winding induction motor. The motor is fed from both of the ends with two neutral point clamped (NPC) three-level inverters. In order to eliminate the common mode voltage of the motor ends and balance the neutral point potential of the DC link, only zero common mode voltage vectors are used and a balancing control factor is gained from calculation in the strategy. In order to improve the harmonic characteristics of the output voltages and currents, the balancing control factor is regulated properly and the theoretical analysis is provided. Simulation and experimental results show that by adopting the proposed method, the common mode voltage can be completely eliminated, the neutral point potential can be accurately balanced and the harmonic performance for the output voltages and currents can be effectively improved.
A novel algorithm is proposed to regulate the neutral point potential in neutral point clamped three-level inverters. Oscillations of the neutral point potential and an unbalanced dc-link voltage cause distortions of the output voltage. Large capacitors, which make the application costly and bulky, are needed to eliminate oscillations. Thus, the algorithm proposed in this paper utilizes the finite-control-set model predictive control and the multistage medium vector to solve these issues. The proposed strategy consists of a two-step prediction and a cost function to evaluate the selected multistage medium vector. Unlike the virtual vector method, the multistage medium vector is a mixture of the virtual vector and the original vector. In addition, its amplitude is variable. The neutral point current generated by it can be used to adjust the neutral point potential. When compared with the virtual vector method, the multistage medium vector contributes to decreasing the regulation time when the modulation index is high. The vectors are rearranged to cope with the variable switching frequency of the model predictive control. Simulation and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed strategy.
Many conventional multi-level inverters have detected switching faults by using the over voltage and current. However, fault detection of the switching elements is very difficult because the voltage and current due to each switching fault decrease more than the normal operation. Moreover, the dc-link unbalancing voltage causes a serious problem in the safety and reliability of system when the 3-level inverter faults occur Therefore, this paper proposes the simple fault diagnose method and the neutral-point-voltage control method that can protect the 3-level inverter system from the unbalancing voltage of the do-link capacitors when the faults of switching elements occur in the 3-level inverter that is very efficient in ac motor drives of the high voltage and high power applications. Through experiment results, the validity of the proposed method is demonstrated.
This paper proposes a simple control strategy based on the discontinuous PWM(DPWM) to balance the DC-link voltage of three-level Neutral-Point-Clamped(WPC) inverters at low modulation index. New DPWM methods in multi-level inverter are also introduced. The proposed DPWM method changes the path and duration to flow the neutral point current out of or into neutral point of the DC-link and it makes the overall fluctuation of the DC-link voltage zero during a sampling time of reference voltage vector. Therefore, the voltage of the DC-link can be balanced fairly well and also the voltage ripple of the DC-link is reduced significantly. Moreover, comparing with conventional methods, the proposed strategy is very simple. The validity of the proposed DPWM method is verified by experiment
This paper studies the inherent relationship between currents and zero-sequence components. Then a precise algorithm is proposed to calculate the injected zero-sequence component to control the DC-Link neutral-point voltage balance, which can result in a more efficient and flexible neutral point voltage balance with a desirable performance. In addition, it is shown that carried-based PWM with the calculated zero-sequence component scheme can be equivalent to space-vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM). Based on the proposed method, the optimal zero-sequence component of the feasible modulation indices is analyzed. In addition, the unbalanced load limitation of the DC-Link neutral-point voltage balance control is also revealed. Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the validity and practicality of the proposed algorithm.
This study proposes a neutral voltage balance control scheme for stable fault-tolerant operation of an active neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverter using carrier-based pulse width modulation. The proposed scheme maintains the neutral voltage balance by reconfiguring the switching combination and modulating the reference output voltage in order to solve the degradation of the output characteristic in the fault tolerant operation due to the fault of the power semiconductor switch constituting the ANPC inverter. The feasibility of the proposed control scheme is confirmed by HIL experiment using RT-BOX.
Generally, brushless DC motor(BLDCM) driving system uses hall sensors or encoders as the mechanical position or speed sensor. It is necessary to achieve the informations of rotor position for driving trapezoidal type brushless DC motor without any position sensor. In this paper, the commutation signals are obtained without the motor neutral voltage, multistage analog filters, A/D converters, or the complex digital phase shift circuits which are indispensable in the conventional sensorless control algorithms. In the proposed method, in stead of detecting the zero crossing point of the nonexcited motor back electromagnetic force for the average motor terminal to neutral voltage, the commutation signal are extracted directly from the specific average line to line voltage with low-pass filter, adder and comparators circuit. In contrast to conventional methods, the neutral voltage is not need; therefore, the commutation signals are insensitive to the common mode noise. Moreover, the complex phase shift circuit can be eliminated. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulation results.
This paper proposes a novel direct power control (DPC) strategy for neutral-point-clamped (NPC) three-level rectifiers, to directly control the active power, the reactive power and the neutral point potential of the rectifiers by referring to three pre-calculated vector influence tables and minimizing an objective function. In the three vector influence tables, the influences of different voltage vectors on the active power, the reactive power and the neutral-point potential are shown explicitly. A conceptual description and control algorithm of the proposed controller are presented in this paper. Then, numerical simulations and experiments are carried out to validate the proposed method. Both the simulation and experimental results show that good performances during both the steady-state and transient operating conditions are achieved. As a result, the proposed strategy has been proven to be effective for NPC three-level rectifiers.
