Verification of the Global Numerical Weather Prediction Using SYNOP Surface Observation Data (SYNOP 지상관측자료를 활용한 수치모델 전구 예측성 검증)

  • This paper describes methodology verifying near-surface predictability of numerical weather prediction models against the surface synoptic weather station network (SYNOP) observation. As verification variables, temperature, wind, humidity-related variables, total cloud cover, and surface pressure are included in this tool. Quality controlled SYNOP observation through the pre-processing for data assimilation is used. To consider the difference of topographic height between observation and model grid points, vertical inter/extrapolation is applied for temperature, humidity, and surface pressure verification. This verification algorithm is applied for verifying medium-range forecasts by a global forecasting model developed by Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems to measure the near-surface predictability of the model and to evaluate the capability of the developed verification tool. It is found that the verification of near-surface prediction against SYNOP observation shows consistency with verification of upper atmosphere against global radiosonde observation, suggesting reliability of those data and demonstrating importance of verification against in-situ measurement as well. Although verifying modeled total cloud cover with observation might have limitation due to the different definition between the model and observation, it is also capable to diagnose the relative bias of model predictability such as a regional reliability and diurnal evolution of the bias.

  • According to the rapid evolution of internet, the number of internet users has greatly increased, so that the web servers are getting more important. If there are a great number of users trying to connect to a popular web server, the load of the web server will increase rapidly, so that failures may occur or web services may stop. An efficient load monitoring technique is required for the available web services and the performance management. The traditional techniques for load monitoring of web server using the client-server method have the problem that the server programs in client-server method must be pre-installed to all web servers. This paper implements web server load monitoring system using the mobile agent in order to overcome the problem of client-server computing. The system based on the mobile agent has no need to install the program in advance and it reduces the network traffic and the additional overheads in web servers.

  • MMORPGs may involve a great number of concurrent players, and those servers usually have to manage hundred, or even thousands of avatars co-existing in the same virtual world. So if failing to send a command or an event message, or sending it too late may cause damages to the avatar evolution(death, injury, loss of resources), and may result in unjustified penalties for the player. Many policies could be defined to realize a ranking evaluation of available servers. Unfortunately, due to the highly dynamic characteristics of server loads and network performances, any optimal allocation would soon become sub-optimal. In order to solve those problems we propose the "time-interval based fairness partitioning method"(TIP). TIP will distribute the avatar to the game server equally with time-interval in order to avoid the problems form the unfairness of game servers load.

LOW FREQUENCY OBSERVATIONS OF A RADIO LOUD DWARF GALAXY

  • We investigate the radio properties of the dwarf galaxy SDSS J133245.62+263449.3 which shows optical signatures of black hole activity. Dwarf galaxies are known to host intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) with masses $M_{BH}{\sim}10^{4-6}M_{\odot}$, some of them being radio loud. Recently, Reines et al. (2013) found dwarf galaxy candidates which show signatures of being black hole hosts based on optical spectral lines. SDSS J133245.62+263449.3 is one of them; it shows a flux density of ~ 20 mJy at 1.4 GHz, which corresponds to $L_{1.4GHz}{\sim}10^{23}W\;Hz^{-1}$. This is much brighter than other black hole host dwarf galaxies. However, star formation activity can contribute to radio continuum emission as well. To understand the nature of the radio emission from SDSS J133245.62+263449.3, we imaged this radio loud dwarf galaxy at low frequencies (325 MHz and 610 MHz) using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). We present here the high resolution images from our GMRT observations. While we detect no obvious extended emission from radio jets from the central AGN, we do find the emission to be moderately extended and unlikely to be dominated by disk star formation. VLBI observations using the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) are now being planned to understand the emission morphology and radiation mechanism.

  • The spin states of asteroids is regarded as an important clue to understand not only the physical property of an individual object but also the dynamical evolution of the of the population as a whole. Single asteroids can be broadly classified into two separate groups according to their rotational states; Principal Axis (PA) and Non-Principal Axis (NPA) rotators. To date, lightcurve observations have been carried out mostly for PA asteroids. However, discovery of NPA objects has recently been increased due to new observing techniques, and this is the reason why rotational properties of NPA rotators became an issue. As a DEEP-South pilot study for NPA, we selected two targets, 5247 Krolv (1982 UP6) and 14764 Kilauea (7072 P-L) considering their Principal Axis Rotation (PAR) code and visibility. Observations were made between Jan. and Feb. 2016 for 17 nights employing Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) 1.6 m telescopes installed at SSO and SAAO using DEEP-South TO (Target of Opportunity) mode. To obtain lightcurves, we conducted time-series photometry using Johnson-Cousins R-filter. Multi-band photometry was also made with BVRI filters at the same time, for taxonomy. Their preliminary lightcurves and approximate mineralogy will be presented.

Coverage and Energy Modeling of HetNet Under Base Station On-Off Model

  • Small cell networks, as an important evolution path for next-generation cellular networks, have drawn much attention. Different from the traditional base stations (BSs) always-on model, we proposed a BSs on-off model, where a new, simple expression for the probabilities of active BSs in a heterogeneous network is derived. This model is more suitable for application in practical networks. Based on this, we develop an analytical framework for the performance evaluation of small cell networks, adopting stochastic geometry theory. We derive the system coverage probability; average energy efficiency (AEE) and average uplink power consumption (AUPC) for different association strategies; maximum biased received power (MaBRP); and minimum association distance (MiAD). It is analytically shown that MaBRP is beneficial for coverage but will have some loss in energy saving. On the contrary, MiAD is not advocated from the point of coverage but is more energy efficient. The simulation results show that the use of range expansion in MaBRP helps to save energy but that this is not so in MiAD. Furthermore, we can achieve an optimal AEE by establishing an appropriate density of small cells.

Synergetics based damage detection of frame structures using piezoceramic patches

  • This paper investigates the Synergetics based Damage Detection Method (SDDM) for frame structures by using surface-bonded PZT (Lead Zirconate Titanate) patches. After analyzing the mechanism of pattern recognition from Synergetics, the operating framework with cooperation-competition-update process of SDDM was proposed. First, the dynamic identification equation of structural conditions was established and the adjoint vector (AV) set of original vector (OV) set was obtained by Generalized Inverse Matrix (GIM).Then, the order parameter equation and its evolution process were deduced through the strict mathematics ratiocination. Moreover, in order to complete online structural condition update feature, the iterative update algorithm was presented. Subsequently, the pathway in which SDDM was realized through the modified Synergetic Neural Network (SNN) was introduced and its assessment indices were confirmed. Finally, the experimental platform with a two-story frame structure was set up. The performances of the proposed methodology were tested for damage identifications by loosening various screw nuts group scenarios. The experiments were conducted in different damage degrees, the disturbance environment and the noisy environment, respectively. The results show the feasibility of SDDM using piezoceramic sensors and actuators, and demonstrate a strong ability of anti-disturbance and anti-noise in frame structure applications. This proposed approach can be extended to the similar structures for damage identification.

Potential of Children's Museum as a Base for Donation Network - Focused on Chicago Children's Museum - (기부네트워크 구축 거점으로서 어린이박물관의 잠재성 분석 연구 - 시카고 어린이박물관 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to seek a planning approach for children's museum within Korean context that promotes community participation. A literature review method and a field survey method were used. Literature reviews on community participation paradigm, residents' participation and donation networks in community regeneration processes, and finally on case studies on children's museum in Korea were carried out. Through the field survey on Chicago Children's Museum(CCM) located in downtown Chicago, its role was identified as networking systems of community participation and donation and was verified as a socio-physical base for vitalizing donation culture that is an active and a leading community participation method. As a result, CCM has engaged many partnerships with city organizations and local schools to provide diverse and unique programs that are not only targeted to children but also parents, teachers and visitors. Also, an evolution of CCM through various types of donations and community participation was delineated. CCM was found successfully in restoring community spirit and vitalizing economical growth where it once was a decayed city area. Rather than focusing on descriptive technique of typical children's museum, this study explored how community fabric is made and acted out, through rethinking community participation's value, and how it can influence a physical space. CCM, as a good example of community participatory museum, the results can be used as a reference in planning and directing community participation based children's museums in Korea. It is significant to shed light on children's museum as an opportunity of social space which can empower community.

A Security Model of Mobile Agent Regarding Performance (성능을 고려한 이동 에이전트 보안 모델)

  • As the proliferation of Internet, mobile agent related technologies are examined for possible growth and evolution. In information retrieval, network and distributed system management, and electronic commerce, mobile agent is more flexible than the traditional communication paradigm. Despite the performance benefits, mobile agent is not used widely in the market because it is very vulnerable to a variety of attacks. In many studies related the security vulnerability for a mobile agent, the high security causes the performance to degrade. In this paper, we propose and evaluate the efficient security model for mobile agent using TDGM(Trusted Domain & Guide Manager), which provides three kinds of services : the trusted domain management, the security service and the travel plan guide. The result clearly shows that this model provides high security and minimizes the performance degradation.

  • LTE-maritime, which was built as part of the Korean e-Navigation project, has been providing a service that meets the goal of establishing a network up to 100km from the coast since J anuary 31, 2021. To provide appropriate communication services for LTE-maritime from the perspective of real users, additional performance analysis of LTE-maritime is required considering service implementation, and efficient use of spectrum resources. This paper presents the requirement of transmission speed according to the e-Navigation service scenario, and available transmission speed based on LTE modulation coding scheme (MCS) according to sea-specific ship distribution scenario and frequency resource allocation, and is cross-analyzed with results of the sea test.
