Intelligent agents represent parts and manufacturing resources, which cooperate, negotiate, and compete with each other. The negotiation between agents is in general based on the Contract-Net-Protocol. This paper describes a new approach to negotiation-based job shop scheduling. The proposed method includes multi-negotiation strategy as well as single-negotiation. A case study showing the comparison of various negotiation strategies is also given.

Though studies on negotiations have actively been conducted in the field of e-Commerce so far, some problems have yet to be solved and many application fields of negotiation systems exist. Currently, many businesses shift from various fields to e-Commerce market, due to recent social changes and expansion of e-Commerce market; however, we need to develop the study of automated agents to resolve the issue of negotiation, which is an essential element in the e-Commerce, by minimizing human interference under the e-Commerce environment. In this study, we intend to propose a new negotiation protocol considering the negotiation alternatives through continuous negotiation rounds in relation to an automated negotiation issue whose participants are one to N (seller to buyers). We also present an agent-facilitated negotiation methodology by which negotiation alternative generation process is automated, in consideration of buyer's negotiation attributes and strategies in the negotiation system.
Negotiation plays a fundamental role in human cooperative activities, allowing people to resolve conflicts that could interfere with cooperative behaviors. Negotiation In multi-agent systems is achieved through the exchange of messages In a shared agent communication language (ACL). We introduce a rational negotiation meta-language for autonomous, self-interested, and resource-bounded artificial BDI agents. We then propose a negotiation protocol for BDI agents with communicative acts based on their mental states.
The automated assignment of multiple tasks to executing agents is a key problem in the area of multi-agent systems. In many domains, significant savings can be achieved by reallocating tasks among agents with different costs for handling tasks. The automation of task reallocation among self-interested agents requires that the individual agents use a common negotiation protocol that prescribes how they have to interact in order to come to an agreement on "who does what". In this paper, we introduce the multi-agent Traveling Salesman Problem(TSP) as an example of task reallocation problem, and suggest the Vickery auction as an interagent negotiation protocol for solving this problem. In general, auction-based protocols show several advantageous features: they are easily implementable, they enforce an efficient assignment process, and they guarantce an agreement even in scenarios in which the agents possess only very little domain-specific Knowledge. Furthermore Vickrey auctions have the additional advantage that each interested agent bids only once and that the dominant strategy is to bid one′s true valuation. In order to apply this market-based protocol into task reallocation among self-interested agents, we define the profit of each agent, the goal of negotiation, tasks to be traded out through auctions, the bidding strategy, and the sequence of auctions. Through several experiments with sample multi-agent TSPs, we show that the task allocation can improve monotonically at each step and then finally an optimal task allocation can be found with this protocol.

A dynamic supply chain that is composed of many different companies with different rent roles and interests allows free joining and secession. Buyers place orders simultaneously and manufacturers should compete each other for the orders. The purpose of our paper is how to find the optimal formation of supply chain ill a global viewpoint while allowing each member company to pursue his local goal The dynamic nature of supply chain formation causes the variation of cost depending on how many orders a manufacturer would accept. We propose a multi-agent based negotiation protocol that efficiently leads to the formation of optimal supply chain without giving up maximization of the individual profit in multi-agent environment of the make-to-order industry. The goal of the negotiation is to form a supply chain to minimize the overall sum of manufacturers' manufacturing cost, and earliness cost and tardiness cost based on SET model. We compare the negotiation protocol with Branch & Bound method. Finally, the validity and performance of buyer's negotiation has been tested experimentally.
In this paper we develop an adaptive interface between video compression and transission protocols to handle QoS fluctuations that are common to mobile communication systems. We consider various generic design alternatives for QoS adaptation and identify 'QoS negotiation' as the most promissing. This method gives the best possibilities to obtain system-wide efficiency. To handle the indued system complexity we apply a design philosophy (called ARC) that separates implementation dependencies by introducing QoS interfaces between system modules. In the ARC phlosophy the implementation details are hidden in the subsystems. To assure efficient adaptation, the QoS must be negotiated between modules. We select the QoS parameters that are both necessary and sufficient for efficient negotiation between the video encoder and protocol modules. We describe the relation between the QoS parameters at the interface and the internal parameters of common video coding methods and protocol elements. Furthermore, we describe a negotiation procedure that allows a system-wide optimum to emerge.

This paper proposes an enhanced transport protocol for multipeer communications. It is assumed that there exists a transport connection owner that takes the roles of the establishment, management and termination of a transport connection. The proposed protocol classifies the data transfer type into simplex, duplex and N-plex multicasts and provides several transport services to support various requirements in group communications. The general operations and reliability controls of each transfer type are different from one another and carried out by a shared control tree. The QoS negotiation is performed during the creation phase. The notification of negotiated values is followed by an acknowledgment procedure for confirmation. The four-way handshake is introduced. After negotiation, such a resource reservation protocol as RSVP can reserve system and network resources according to the arbitrated values. This paper suggests a conceptual model of the transport layer and its protocol behaviors over the IP multicast and RSVP network.

As the size and complexity of network increase, Distributed Systems Management (DSM) will be significant issue within information network in order to increase the high reliability and to improve the flexibility of network management. The OSI management model has several problems. The key problems are that it does not fully address the problems of how to develop communication protocol in support of DSM, and how to classify the management connection criteria. In this paper, to solve first problem described above, this paper propose the connectionless CMIP(Common Management Information Protocol) to accomplish for effectively managing the distributed management system, and indicate its efficiency; this protocol is available to negotiate among the managing systems, handle the dynamic information. To work out second problem, we introduce the connection criteria in the hierarchy of management systems, and finally evaluate the efficiency of a suggested protocol during cooperative negotiation among the managing systems.
This Paper describes our experiences with the design and implementation of a networked multimedia information management system in an object-oriented framework for distributed multimedia applications, and an integrated QoS-resource negotiation protocol which has been applied to a video server in our networked multimedia infrastructure. The salient features of our framework to support efficient multimedia streaming are explained. Next the paper explores the challenges faced in integrating the proposed QoS negotiation policy into the framework.

Our paper proposes an agent based automated negotiation model. The agents can perform an integrative negotiation with multi-issue in a one-to-many way. The negotiation protocol follows the offer-counteroffer principal, and an adapted offer generation strategy. With the utility theory, agent could evaluate the offers and determine the following actions. In order to yield a top-quality deal and shorten the negotiation period, agents propose multiple offers, which consist of a particular combination of issue values and lave the identical utility with the given utility. The experiment shows that the model ensures the participants could reach a better agreement in a short time.
