  • Unlike other educational spaces in school facilities, restrooms have remained unpleasant spaces without reflecting the change in social awareness and students' lifestyle. In the process of the 'School Restroom Environment Remodeling Project in Seoul' by means of "user participatory design method", this study aimed to suggest a design of the school restroom environment responding to the different needs of actual users, who are students and school staffs. By surveying them, it was revealed that they have a variety of respective behavioral patterns and spatial needs according to their status, gender, age and working period. Implications of this study are as follows; First, it is necessary to establish a separate restroom facility standards that respond to the characteristics of elementary school students. Second, there should be an expansive approach to widely accommodate with the users' needs that were found out through 'user participation', more than just repairing pre-existing space. Third, it needs to have critical review of the maintenance and operation system itself as well as the improvement of the school restroom environment.

  • A company needs low cost and high efficient S/W tools to improve the white color productivity in daily operation, These needs may be satisfied by end-user knowledge management system to be suggested in this paper. We suggest that the end-user knowledge management is not made by specialized developer but directly made by end-users of some related managers using company-wide DB and department DB. We expect that this end-user knowledge management system will increase the efficiency of end-user daily operation and minimize the total life cycle cost of end-user computing system in industry. The suggested end-user knowledge management system has been tested in some companies through the training course.

  • Due to the recent changes in residential value, user needs for various spaces in residential space are increasing. However, it is not easy to change and reconstruct the first residential form according to the needs of the user due to the characteristics of the residential space where movement and deformation are difficult. Therefore, this study aims to derive a plan to meet user needs according to changing residential value by using fully autonomous vehicles with a concept of space that can be moved. First, the existing residential space was classified through literature research, and based on this, the space type of the fully autonomous vehicle for the residential was derived through user research. Then, through the survey method and statistical analysis, user needs analysis for residential space, usefulness analysis of derived space type and type specification were carried out. Finally, based on the results of the study, the design direction of the fully autonomous vehicle for residential purpose was presented. Based on the user's perception, it is meaningful that it categorizes the space of the fully autonomous vehicle for residential purposes and suggests the design direction.

  • One product has so many different kind of user groups and each user group has different characters and needs of use. So, designer has difficulty in definding which group is major or sub in a product, what kind of characters and needs does that group has. In this study, we classify the user upon three factors ; accuracy of rules, speed of action, speed of problem solving and propose design guideline for the classifed user group. The results of this study will be applied to more user-friendly design approach.

  • In some situations, you need information in order to solve a problem that has occurred. In information science, user needs are often described through very specific examples rather than through a classification of situation types in which information needs occur. Furthermore, information science often describes general human needs, typically with a reference to Maslow's classification of needs (1954), instead of actual information needs. Lexicography has also focused on information needs, but has developed a more abstract classification of types of information needs, though (until more recent research into lexicographical functions) with a particular interest in linguistic uncertainties and the lack of knowledge and skills in relation to one or several languages. In this article, we suggest a classification of information needs in which a tripartition has been made according to the different types of situations: communicative needs, cognitive needs, and operative needs. This is a classification that is relevant and useful in general in our modern information society and therefore also relevant for information science, including lexicography.

  • We attempted to implement Human Centered Design(HCD) according to the following three steps : (1) deriving user needs, (2) conducting ideation based the derived user needs, and (3) developing design concepts. The research on users and experts requires substantial time and cost, and there has not been an effective and clear-cut means to validate the research results before developing design concepts. We therefore extended the means of usability test to a context-based character. We applied this test for the development of design for Wearable Cardioverter-Defibrillator(WCD). Would this test be applied to various cases in the fields of medical equipment/apparatus development - which relatively takes a longer time to be developed - it would aid in accumulating and categorizing the reference data for variables incorporated for evaluating such cases. Future studies are needed to complement our findings concerning context-based usability tests.

  • In this study, in order to understand the characteristics of the users' information needs for each public library unit, the user needs were analyzed based on the various attribute information of the books loaned to 11 public libraries in 8 districts in Seoul. As a result, the prominent book use patterns of the libraries were revealed, specifically related to the target user groups, purpose/motivation, interests/preferences, book genre, and subject. In addition, there was a preference for authors, and a difference in the role of the preferred authors in each library was also revealed. The results of this study will help to provide guidelines for the development of differentiated collections and service programs based on user needs.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an experimental model for information needs assessment, which could be utilized to investigate the 'real' information needs of the user(or group). The focus was on the perspectives of users rather than those of system managers. In details, this study identifies the conceptual definition of the keyword 'information need', analyzes the limitation and problems the previously conducted needs assessments in this area, and finally, develops an experimental model based on the cognitive and affective variables which might influence both production and strength of information needs in the user(or group}. The model emphasizes four influencing variable, namely, individual, work-related, organizational(or institutional), and socio-cultural variables. Also discussed is the relationships among these variables.

  • This research looked into both meaning and value of library catalog through the information behavior of user and suggested a plan to improve the quality and search functions, which are reflected the users' information needs and search behavior. U-CAT, a experimentally developed with reinforcing the contents and search functions of current library catalogs, was tested with the degree of satisfaction by the sample user group. The test results showed that the user's satisfaction on U-CAT was very high. The result verified that a little change with current library catalogs (to upgrade its quality) could result in a higher satisfaction of user group.
