  • Two β-diketone derivatives bearing triphenylene (1-naphthalene-2-yl-3-triphenylen-2-yl-propane-1,3-dione (NTPD)) and naphthalene (1,3-di-naphthalene-2-yl-propane-1,3-dione (DNPD)) and their Ln(III) complexes (Ln = Er or Gd) were synthesized and their photophysical properties were investigated. The sensitized emission of Er3+ ion in Er3+-[NTPD]3(terpy) and Er3+-[DNPD]3(terpy) was observed upon excitation at absorption maximum of ligands. Their photophysical studies indicate the sensitization of Er3+ luminescence by energy transfer through the excited triplet state of β-diketone ligand. The energy transfer rate through the excited triplet state of β-diketone ligand to Er3+ ion occurs faster than that of the oxygen quenching rate.

  • We present experimental results on the multiplexed and stack-wise recording of near-field holograms. Experiments on angular multiplexing show that the angular selectivity of near-field hologram is better than that of the conventional hologram. Experiments on stack-wise recording prove that near-fields originated from sub-diffraction-limit-size objects could be stored in a photorefractive crystal at 2mm apart from the crystal surface. In addition, to improve the data access and transfer time, a silicon nano-aperture array was introduced and applied to the recording of near-field holograms.

  • The present study investigates heat/mass transfer for flow through perforated plates for application to combustor wall and turbine blade film cooling. The experiments are conducted for hole length to diameter ratios of 0.68 to 1.5, for hole pitch-to-diameter ratios of 1.5 and 3.0, for gap distance between two parallel perforated plates of 1 to 3 hole diameters, and for Reynolds numbers of 60 to 13, 700. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients near and inside the cooling holes are obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. Detailed knowledge of the local transfer coefficients is essential to analyze thermal stress in turbine components. The results indicate that the heat/mass transfer coefficients inside the hole surface vary significantly due to flow separation and reattachment. The transfer coefficient near the reattachment point is about four and half times that for a fully developed circular tube flow. The heat/mass transfer coefficient on the leeward surface has the same order as that on the windward surface because of a strong recirculation flow between neighboring jets from the array of holes. For flow through two perforated plate layers, the transfer coefficients on the target surface (windward surface of the second wall) affected by the gap spacing are approximately three to four times higher than that with a single layer.

  • We have investigated the photophysical properties of dansyl-N-methylaminobenzoic acid (DABAH) as a ligand and its lanthanide (Ln3+)-cored complexes (Ln3+-(DABA)3(terpy)) in order to determine the main energy transfer pathway for sensitized near infrared emission of Ln3+ ions (Ln3+ = Nd3+ and Er3+) in Ln3+- (DABA)3(terpy). The fluorescence spectrum of DABAH shows a large Stokes shift with increasing solvent polarity. This large Stokes shift might be due to the formation of a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state, as demonstrated by the large dipole moment in the excited state. It is in good agreement with the result that the phosphorescence even in the Gd3+-cored complex based on the DABAH ligand was not observed, maybe due to the highly forbidden character of the S1 → T1 transition in the DABAH ligand. A short decay component (ca. 1 ns) was observed in Er3+-(DABA)3(terpy) whereas the fluorescence lifetimes of DABAH and its Gd3+-(DABA)3(terpy) are observed about ~10 ns. The short component could be originated from the energy transfer process between the ligand and the Ln3+ ion. Based on the fluorescence of DABAH its Ln3+- (DABA)3(terpy), the sensitization of Ln3+ luminescence in the Ln3+-(DABA)3(terpy) takes place by the energy transfer via the TICT state of DABAH in the excited singlet state rather than via the excited triplet state.

  • Much attention has been given to predict the near-field mass transfer of a single radioactive species from a waste solid into surrounding porous medium. But only limited considerations have been given to predict the coupled mass transfer of species with a radioactive decay chain. In this study we present an analysis assuming that the members of a decay chain dissolve congruently with a solubility-limited matrix. We give general, non-recursive analytic solutions for the transport of a radioactive decay chain in a finite porous medium when nuclides are released congruently with the matrix. As an illustration we consider the decay chain $^{234}$ Ulongrightarrow$^{230}$ Thlongrightarrow$^{226}$ Ra from spent fuel. These solutions may be useful and potentially important in performance assessment of radioactive waste repositories.

  • The global demand for energy has been increasing since past decades. Various technologies have been working to find a suitable alternative for the generation of sustainable energy. Photovoltaic technologies for solar energy conversion represent one of the significant routes for the green and renewable energy production. Despite of remarkable improvement in solar cell technologies, the generation of power is still suffering with lower energy conversion efficiency, high production cost, etc. The major problem in improving the PV efficiency is spectral mismatch between the incident solar spectrum and bandgap of a semiconductor material used in solar cell. Luminescent materials such as rare-earth doped phosphor materials having the quantum efficiency higher than unity can be helpful for photovoltaic applications. Quantum cutting phosphors are the most suitable candidates for the generation of two or more low-energy photons for the absorption of every incident high-energy photons. The phosphors which are capable of converting UV photon to visible and near-IR (NIR) photon are studied primarily for photovoltaic applications. In this review, we will survey various near IR quantum cutting phosphors with respective to their synthesis method, energy transfer mechanism, nature of activator, sensitizer and dopant materials incorporation and energy conversion efficiency considering their applications in photovoltaics.

  • The comparative analysis of near-wall treatment methods that affect the prediction of heat transfer over the gas turbine nozzle guide vane were presented. To achieve this objective, wall-function and low Reynolds number methods, and the transition model were applied and simulated using NASA's C3X turbine vane. The predicted turbine vane surface pressure distribution data using the near-wall treatment methods were found to be in close agreement with experimental data. However, the predicted vane metal temperature and heat transfer coefficient displayed significant differences. Overall, the low Reynolds method and transition model did not offer specific advantages in the prediction of temperature and heat transfer than did the wall-function method. The Reynolds stress model used along with the wall-function method resulted in a relatively high accuracy of prediction of the vane metal temperature and heat transfer coefficient.

  • In this work, the preliminary analysis on both the tracking schedule and measurements characteristics for the spacecraft on the phase of lunar transfer and capture is performed. To analyze both the tracking schedule and measurements characteristics, lunar transfer and capture phases' optimized trajectories are directly adapted from former research, and eleven ground tracking facilities (three Deep Space Network sties, seven Near Earth Network sites, one Daejeon site) are assumed to support the mission. Under these conceptual mission scenarios, detailed tracking schedules and expected measurement characteristics during critical maneuvers (Trans Lunar Injection, Lunar Orbit Insertion and Apoapsis Adjustment Maneuver), especially for the Deajeon station, are successfully analyzed. The orders of predicted measurements' variances during lunar capture phase according to critical maneuvers are found to be within the order of mm/s for the range and micro-deg/s for the angular measurements rates which are in good agreement with the recommended values of typical measurement modeling accuracies for Deep Space Networks. Although preliminary navigation accuracy guidelines are provided through this work, it is expected to give more practical insights into preparing the Korea's future lunar mission, especially for developing flight dynamics subsystem.

  • Heat transfer characteristic near a sharp fin was studied in a supersonic flow. Mach number and the Reynolds number were 3 and $5{\times}10^7$ respectively. Infra-red thermography was used to obtain the variation of surface heat transfer coefficient distribution. The angles of attack were ranged from $12.5^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$ and the numerical analysis and the oil flow method were conducted to understand flow fields near a sharp fin.

  • In this paper. a microphone array beamforming algorithm that reduces the signal distortion caused by reverberation and near-field effect in car environment is proposed. When reverberation or near-field effect is present, an optimum beamformer should be constructed with a steering vector consisting of transfer functions between source and microphones, but it is generally difficult to estimate transfer functions on-line without knowledge of the source signal. Instead, a sub-optimal beamforming algorithm that reduces signal distortion is proposed. It is constructed with steering vectors consisting of relative transfer functions between reference sensor and other sensors. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. we had recorded noisy speech database in a car, and performed speech recognition experiments with HMM Toolkit (HTK) released by Cambridge University. The recognition rate of the proposed algorithm was 15 percents higher than that of the conventional far-field beamformers in best case.
