  • Ocean heat fluxes over a wide region are generally estimated by an aerodynamic bulk fromula. Though a remote sensing technique can be expected to estimated global heat flux, it is difficult to obtain air temperature and specific humidity at sea surface by a remote sensor. In this study present a new method with which to determine near-sea surface air temperature from in situ data. Also, These methods compared with other methods. A new method used a linear regression equation between sea surface temperature and air temperature of the buoys data. In this study new method is validated using observed monthly mean data at the Japan Meteorological Agency(JMA), National Data Buoy Center(NDBC) and Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere(TOGA)-Tropical Atmosphere Ocean(TAO) buoys. The result that bias and rmse are 0.28, 1.5$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. The correlation coefficient is 0.98. Also, to retrieve near-sea surface specific humidity(Q) from good nonlinear regression relationship between vapor pressure(Ea) of buoy data and air temperature, after obtained the third-order polynomial function, compared with that of estimated from SSM/I empirical equation by Schussel et al(1995). The result that bias and rmse are -1.42 and 1.75(g/kg).

  • Although tidal current affects the distribution of zooplankton significantly, its impacts were usually ignored when the studios on the zooplankton abundance were conducted even in the Yellow Sea where tidal current was very strong. Furthermore, information on the tidal impacts was very limited in the Yellow Sea. In this study, the tidal current effects on the abundances of copepod genera Acartia, Calanopia, Calanus, Centropages, Corycaeus, Labidocera, Paracalanus, Tortanus in a fixed sampling station near the Sonanjido (Island) were studied. The abundance of copepods collected by the same sampling method nab highest when the tidal current was fastest at 2 or 3 hours after the high or low tide.

  • Large scale of fish kills by red tides has been occurred every year in coastal water fisheries of Korea. To suppress red tide spreading out over the south coastal water of the Korean Peninsula large amount of loess has been applied every year because loess is known to be effective in removing red tide organisms. Effects of loess application in ecosystem of underwater near sea shore were investigated with some physical characteristics of loess. Loess used for the red tide reduction consisted of very fine particles, of which size was mostly less than 0.1 mm. Particles of loess blocked light penetration, which is essential for the underwater ecosystem. Loess also pushed pH down by the hydrolysis activities of aluminium and iron It was found that underwater ecosystems where loess was applied near sea shore were devastated. Sea plants such as sea weeds were gone leaving only their roots. Clams and snails were dead under the loess dust blanket. And fishes were not found at all where loess has been sprayed lot long time. It was found that even if loess has some capacity to reduce red tide temporarily, loess application should be slopped to protect underwater ecosystems.

  • Sea level fluctuation present a direct influence to those who live near the coast. The importance of monitoring sea level is evident. Therefore, various techniques have been employed for sea level measurements such as the coastal water level gauges, satellite altimetry and GPS buoy. Especially, GPS buoys have been used to measure water levels, atmospheric parameter and other physical conditions in sea, tide correction, the altimeter range calibration, ocean environment. In this paper, we will mainly concentrate on the kinematic technique for GPS buoy to measure the sea level. A test was carried out to test the method proposed in this paper, which made use of a GPS buoy equipped to monitor the sea level in Busan. We have executed to analysis about applications of GPS buoy.

  • Vertical structures of wind-driven and tidal currents in a rectangular shaped uniform-depth basin of homogeneous water have been investigated using a mode-splitted, multi-level grid-box, hydrodynamic numerical model. The model was verified using analytical solutions for various vertical eddy viscosity profiles such as: a constant eddy viscosity, a linearly decreasing or increasing variation with depth, a quadratic variation with depth and an exponential variation with depth. Particular attention has been paid on the effects of "near-surface wall layer" on vertical shear of velocity. In numerical calculations, the whole water depth was divided into 13 levels with an unequal grid spacing. the model satisfactorily reproduces the velocity profile, but in case the eddy viscosity decreases rapidly with depth as in quadratical or exponential variation with depth, the vertical gradient of velocity near the bottom became very steep, and analytical solutions and numerical results showed some discrepancy. The vertical structures of horizontal velocity vary with both the depth-averaged value of eddy viscosity and its profiles. the velocity near the sea surface and near the bottom responded sensitively to the eddy viscosity of wall layer. For wind-driven current, the strong velocity shear was generated near the sea surface as eddy viscosity near the surface became small. For tidal current, the velocity above the sea bottom layer was almost constant regardless of the profiles of vertical eddy viscosity, but velocity in the sea bottom layer showed strong shear as eddy viscosity became small.

  • It is well known that sound waves in the sea propagates under the influence of sea surface and bottom roughness, the sound speed profile, the water depth, and the density of sea floor sediment. In particular, an abrupt change of sound speed with depth can greatly affect sound propagation through an eddy. Eddies are frequently generated in the East Sea near the Korean Peninsula. A warm eddy with diameter of about 150 km is often observed, and the sound speed profile is greatly changed within about 400 m of water depth at the center by the eddy around the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea. The characteristics of low-frequency sound propagation across a warm eddy are investigated by a sound propagation model in order to understand the influence of warm eddies. The acoustic rays and propagation losses are calculated by a range-dependent acoustic model in conditions where the eddy is both present and absent. We found that low-frequency sound propagation is affected by the warm eddy, and that the phenomena dominate the upper ocean within 800 m of water depth. The propagation losses of a 100 Hz frequency are variable within ${\pm}15$ dB with depth and range by the warm eddy. Such variations are more pronounced at the deep source near the sound channel axis than the shallow source. Furthermore, low-frequency sound propagation from the eddy center to the eddy edge is more affected by the warm eddy than sound propagation from the eddy edge to the eddy center.

  • This paper was concentrated on the distribution and the composition of lost fishing gear on the sea bed around yellow croaker fishing ground in the near sea of Jeju, Korea from April to October 2009 in order to improve the fishery environment. Recovering lost fishing gears was carried out total 10 times with a trawlnet along the isobath. As the result, it seems reasonable to conclude that the amount of lost fishing gear has a deep connection with the dip of the sea bed as well as the fishing gear scale, fishing ground and so on. The amount of recovered lost fishing gears were in order of gillnets, dragged gears, traps and ropes. In particular, traps were recovered almost every time within the survey area.

  • Arctic shipping via the Northern Sea Route could save about 40% of the sailing distance and shorten more than 10 days of the sailing time from Asia to Europe comparing to the existing Southern route through the Suez Canal. Since commercial voyage along the Northern Sea Route and resource development in the Arctic sea will be realized in the near future, Korea needs to challenge Arctic shipping and resource development in the strategic point of view.
