  • A virtual reality system using video image is designed and implemented. A participant having 2{{{{ { 1} over { 2} }}}}DOF can interact with the computer-generated virtual object using her/his full body posture and gesture in the 3D virtual environment. The system extracts the necessary participant-related information by video-based sensing, and simulates the realistic interaction such as collision detection in the virtual environment. The resulting scene obtained by compositing video image of the participant and virtual environment is updated in near real time.

  • Accurate and fast haptic simulations of deformable objects are desired in many applications such as medical virtual reality. In haptic interactions with a coarse model, the number of nodes near the haptic interaction region is too few to generate detailed deformation. Thus, local refinement techniques need to be developed. Many approaches have employed purely geometric subdivision schemes, but they are not proper in describing the deformation behavior of deformable objects. This paper presents a continuum mechanics-based finite element adaptive method to perform haptic interaction with a deformable object. This method superimposes a local fine mesh upon a global coarse model, which consists of the entire deformable object. The local mesh and the global mesh are coupled by the s-version finite element method (s-FEM), which is generally used to enhance accurate solutions near the target points even more. The s-FEM can demonstrate a reliable deformation to users in real-time.

  • This research was carried out to investigate the possibility of real time rice milling ratio measurement using the spectral reflection characteristics. In this study, various methods were compared such as \circled1 using the whiteness meter, \circled2 using the colorimeter, \circled3 using the Visible and the NIR reflection spectrum. The samples were milled in the domain of 84~96% by 0.5% interval classified by milling ratio. The NMG treatment method required about 20 minutes to determine the milled ratio and r2 was 0.0028 to 0.7959 that was very low. In case of whiteness meter, r2 was high but speed of measurement was 5 minutes that was very low. Measurement with the colorimeter required about 5 minutes and r2 was 0.60 to 0.85 that was low. The reflection spectrum were measured in the range of 400~2,500nm with 2nm interval and the MLR model with six-wavelength obtained from first derivative of spectra gave the best results(r2 = 0.967, SEP = 0.729%)

  • The feasibility of an ultrasonic technique using a pulse-echo method of normal-incident compressional waves was evaluated for its sensitivity to the worn surface and near surface damage due to wear. Worn surfaces were generated at various oscillation frequency under a given load and amplitude and these surface were in situ monitored using a ultrasonic wave detection system. Analysis of the ultrasonic waves received from the worn surface revealed a close relationship between the surface and near-surface damage and the maximum echo-amplitude of the compressional waves. The ultrasonic technique was successful in assessing the level of severity of the worn surface in real time during the wear process. It is also shown that the wear depth can be easily measured by the calculation of change of the specimen thickness based on the wave speed measured for the specimen medium.

  • Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging provides a safe and cost-efficient method for immediate data acquisition and visualization of tissues, with technical advantages including minimal autofluorescence, reduced photon absorption, and low scattering in tissue. In this review, we introduce recent advances in NIR fluorescence imaging systems for thoracic surgery that improve the identification of vital tissues and facilitate the resection of tumorous tissues. When coupled with appropriate NIR fluorophores, NIR fluorescence imaging may transform current intraoperative thoracic surgery methods by enhancing the precision of surgical procedures and augmenting postoperative outcomes through improvements in diagnostic accuracy and reductions in the remission rate.
