  • Statement of problem: Dental magnetic materials have been applied to removable prosthetic appliances, maxillofacial prostheses, obturator and dental implant but they still have some problems such as low corrosion resistance in oral environments. Purpose: To increase the corrosion resistance of dental magnetic materials, surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels. Materials and methods : Surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels, and then three kinds of electrochemical corrosion test were performed in 0.9% NaCl solution; potentiodynamic, potentiostatic, and electrochemical impedance test. From this study, corrosion behavior, amount of elements released, mean average surface roughness values, the changing of retention force, and magnetic force values were measured comparing with control group of non-coated magnetic materials. Results: The values of surface roughness of TiN coated Sm-Co and TiN coated Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were lower than those of non coated Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B alloy. From results of potentiodynamic test, the passive current density of TiN coated Sm-Co alloy were smaller than those of TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non coated alloys in 0.9% NaCl solution. From results of potentiostatic and electrochemical impedance test, the surface stability of the TiN coated Sm-Co alloy was more drastically increased than that of the TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non-coated alloy. The retention and magnetic force after and before corrosion test did not change in the case of TiN coated magnetic alloy sealed with stainless steel. Conclusion: It is considered that the corrosion problem and improvement for surface stability of dental magnetic materials could be solved by ion plating with TiN on the surface of dental magnetic materials and by sealing with stainless steels.

  • Microstructure and magnetization behaviors of $MnBi/Fe_3B/Nd2_Fe_{14}B$ nanocomposite alloy have been investigated. It was found that the coercivity increased firstly and then decreased, and saturation magnetization decreased with the additon of MnBi alloy. The addition of 40 wt.% MnBi powder enhanced the coercivity from 192.8 kA/m to 311.2 kA/m. The ${\delta}M$ and D(H)-H plots suggested the occurrence of a stronger exchange-coupling occurring between the hard and soft magnetic phase for this sample. The dependence of coercivity with temperature was discussed in 40 wt.% $Mn_{55}Bi_{45}$/ 60 wt.% $Nd_{4.5}Fe_{76.5}Nb_{0.5}B_{18.5}$ alloy powder, and a positive temperature coefficient was founded from 298 K to 350 K.

  • The influence of casting cooling rate during the preparation of ingots on the grain size distribution and the magnetizing ability of $\textrm{Nd}_{16}\textrm{Fe}_{72}\textrm{V}_{4}\textrm{B}_{8}$ sintered magnets were investigated. Sintered magnets prepared from copper mold which allow a higher cooling rate, show a smaller grain size distribution and god magnetizing ability. The effects of adding bride forming elements, such as Cr, Mn, Nb, and W on the magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets were also investigated. Both Cr and W addition increase coercivity and the resultant $\textrm{Nd}_{16}\textrm{Fe}_{72}\textrm{Cr}_{4}\textrm{B}_{9}$ alloy exhibits a similar magnetizing ability in comparison with $\textrm{Nd}_{16}\textrm{Fe}_{72}\textrm{V}_{4}\textrm{B}_{8}$ alloy.

  • This study was carried out to obtain a basic data on the production of the Nd-Fe-B system rare earth anisotropic bonded magnet by R-D & HDDR process. The reduction reaction of Nd$_2$O$_3$by metallic Ca and the diffusion reaction of Nd into Fe-B alloy powder were investigated for the production the Nd-Fe-B alloy powder. We concluded that a proper quantity of metallic Ca was about 1.3 times of theoretical equivalent from the yields of Nd and B after the R-D reaction at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. In the XRD analysis the diffusion reaction of Nd into the center of Fe-B alloy powder for the completed homogenization was required through about 45min at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for the R-D reaction, and also the maximum efficiency on the yield of Nd was obtained with such a condition. Residual Ca and oxygen contents of the final powder sample after washing were detected in 0.17wt% and 0.42wt% by ICP and oxygen analyzer, respectively.

  • Thin film magnet was fabricated by radio frequency magnetron sputtering using $Nd_13/(Fe.Co)_{70}B_{17}$ alloy target and magnetic properties were investigated according to sputtering conditions from the metallurgical point of view. we could obtain the best preferred orientation of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase at substrate temperatures between $450^{\circ}C$ and $460^{\circ}C$ with the input power 150W, and thin films had the anisotropic magnetic properties. But, as the thickness of thin film increased, the c-axis orientation gradually tended to be disordered and magnetic properties also become isotropic. Just like Nd-Fe-B meltspun ribbon, the microstructure of thin film magnet was consisted of very find cell shaped $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase and the second phase along grain boundary. While, domain structure showed maze patterns whose magnetic easy axis was was perpendicular to film plane of thin film. It was concluded from these results that the perpendicualr anisotropy in magnetization was attributed to the perpendicular alignment of very find $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains in thin film.

  • The influences of Gallium doping on the magnetic microstructures and corrosion behaviors of Nd-Fe-B-Ti-C alloys are investigated. The cooling rate for obtaining fully amorphous structure is raised, and the glassforming ability is improved by the Ga addition. The High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy image shows that the ${\alpha}$-Fe and $Fe_3B$ soft magnetic phases become granular surrounded by the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ hard magnetic phase. The rms and $({\Delta}{\varphi})_{rms}$ value of Nd-Fe-B-Ti-C nanocomposite alloy thick ribbons in the typical topographic and magnetic force images detected by Magnetic Force Microscopy(MFM) decreases with 0.5 at% Ga addition. The corrosion resistances of $Nd_9Fe_{73}B_{12.6}C_{1.4}Ti_{4-x}Ga_x$ (x = 0, 0.5, 1) alloys are enhanced by the Ga addition. It can be attributed to the formation of more amorphous phases in the Ga doped samples.

  • The coercivity $H_c$ of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ magnets and $Nd_2Fe_{14}B/(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ composite magnets were calculated by computer simulation based on the micromagnetic theory under assumptions that $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ and $(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ grains have magnetically deteriorated layers on their surfaces and diffusion of Dy from $(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ grains to $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ ones through the contacting boundaries recovers the magnetic anisotropy of the deteriorated layers of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains. $H_c$ of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B/(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ composite magnets increased by the diffusion of Dy from $(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ grains to $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ ones and the resultant recovery of the anisotropy field of deteriorated layers of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains. The $H_c$ vs fraction of $(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ grains curve were convex for the magnets with the degree of alignment between 0.94 and 0.99, which suggests that the above composite magnets have larger $H_c$ values than the alloy-magnets with the same Dy content, and that we can save the consumption of Dy by using these composite magnets.

  • Oxidation of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal and its effect on the coercivity of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ crystal particles were investigated. Oxidation kinetics of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal was investigated using an excessively grown $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains in the $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$ alloy ingot. Oxidation of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal occurred by dissociation of the phase into multi-phase mixture of ${\alpha}$-Fe, $Fe_3B$, and Nd oxides. Oxidation rate of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal showed no dependence on the crystallographic direction. The oxidation reaction was modeled according to simple linear relationship. Activation energy for the oxidation of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal was calculated to be approximately 26.8 kJ/mol. Fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ crystal particles in near single domain size was prepared by ball milling of the HDDR-treated $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$ alloy, and these particles were used for investigating the effect of oxidation on the coercvity. The near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ crystal particles (${\fallingdotseq}0.3\;{\mu}m$) had high coercivity over 9 kOe. However, the coercivity was radically reduced as the temperature increased in air (<2 kOe at $200^{\circ}C$). This radical coercivity reduction was attributed to the soft magnetic phases, ${\alpha}$-Fe and $Fe_3B$, which were formed on the surface of the fine particles due to the oxidation.

  • Laves phases of $NdFe_2$, $Nd{(Fe_{0.5})}_2$, $SmCo_2$ and $Sm{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$ stoichiometry were prepared using a rapid solidification technology. Low temperature magnetic properties show ferromagnetic behaviors for the $Nd{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$, $SmCo_2$ and $Sm{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$Nd(Feo,Coo,) Laves compounds while a sort of spin reorientation has been suggested for the supposed composition of $NdFe_2$ alloy. This rapidly solidified $NdFe_2$ alloy is believed to consist of metastable rhombohedral $NdFe_7$ phase plus fine particles of Nd-rich phase. Some evidence of phase transition from the mixture of unstable $NdFe_7$ compound plus Nd-rich to $Nd_2Fe_{17}$ plus Fe-Nd-O phase was obtained after annealing the $NdFe_2$, alloy. The pseudo-binary Laves compound, $Sm{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$ exhibits a high coercivityof 4 kOe at room temperature with Curie temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ while the $Nd{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$ compound shows a magnetic moment of $2.8\;{\mu}_B/f.u.$.
