After the collapse of the Tacoma bay bridge at Tacoma Washington, the accurate prediction of aerodynamics became crucial to the sound design of bridges. CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) becomes important tool for the prediction on wind effects on the bridge due to the recent development of CFD. The usage of CFD is further prompted by the advantages in using CFD, such as low-cost and fast feed-back of design. In this paper, an unsteady compressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes code is used for the computation of the flow over bridges. Coakley's q-${\omega}$ two-equation turbulence model is used for the turbulent eddy viscosity. For accurate and stable computations, the local preconditioning method is adapted to the code. Aerodynamic characteristics of a couple bridges are presented to show the validity and the accuracy of the method.
Two coupling methods for the Navier-Stokes equations and a two-equation turbulence model equations are compared. They are the strongly coupled method and the loosely coupled method. The strongly coupled method solves the Navier-Stokes equations and the two-equation turbulence model equations simultaneously, while the loosely coupled method solves the Navier-Stokes equation with the turbulence viscosity fixed and subsequently solves the turbulence model equations with all the flow quantities fixed. In this paper, performances of two coupling methods are compared for two and three-dimensional problems.

This paper describes the air compressibility effect in the CFD simulation of water impact load prediction. In order to consider the air compressibility effect, two sets of governing equations are employed, namely the incompressible Navier-stokes equations and compressible Navier-Stokes equations that describe general compressible gas flow. In order to describe violent motion of free surface, volume-of-fluid method is utilized. The role of air compressibility is presented by the comparative study of water impact load obtained from two different air models, i.e. the compressible and incompressible air. For both cases, water is considered as incompressible media. Compressible air model shows oscillatory behavior of pressure on the solid surface that may attribute to the air-cushion effect. Incompressible air model showed no such oscillatory behavior in the pressure history. This study also showed that the CFD simulation can capture the formation of air pockets enclosed by water and solid surface, which may be the location where the air compressibility effect is dominant.
The Immersed boundary method(IBM) is one of CFD techniques which can simulate flow field around complex objectives using simple Cartesian grid system. In the previous studies the IBM has mostly been implemented to fractional step method based Navier-Stokes solvers. In these cases, pressure buildup near IB was found to occur when linear interpolation and stadard mass conservation is used and the interpolation scheme became complicated when higher order of interpolation is adopted. In this study, we implement the IBM to an incompressible Navier-Stokes solver which uses SIMPLE algorithm. Bi-linear and quadratic interpolation equations were formulated by using only geometric information of boundary to reconstruct velocities near IB. Flow around 2D circular cylinder at Re=40 and 100 was solved by using these formulations. It was found that the pressure buildup was not observed even when the bi-linear interpolation was adopted. The use of quadratic interpolation made the predicted aerodynamic forces in good agreement with those of previous studies.

Here, the unsteady Navier-Stokes solver has been developed using implicit dual time stepping method. The implicit dual time stepping method introduced the pseudo time step for solving the new residual including the steady state residual and real time derivative. For the validation of code, Stokes 2nd problem, the laminar flow on the oscillating flat plate was selected and compare the calculating results with analytic solutions. The calculating velocity profile and skin friction has a good agreement with analytic solutions.
Numerical optimization technique with Navier-Stokes code has been used to reduce the drag of conventional ogival nose. Forebody optimizations are performed for supersonic laminar and turbulent flow conditions. To alleviate the computing time of aerodynamic drag calculation, axisymmetric boundary condition is implemented in the 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes code. The automated optimization procedure with gradient based method results in a drag reduction of $4\;\%$.
NACA0012 Airfoil was simulated with Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) and the aerodynamic characteristics was analyzed for various far-field boundary distances ranging from 10 airfoil chord to 50 chord Drag coefficient distribution was dependent on the far-field distance and circulation, integrated along the loop inside the flow region, was also dependent. It was turned out that some corrections based on the circulation should be added to the far-field boundary condition for accurate airfoil simulation.

Owing to the rapid progress in manufacturing technology of microscale devices, there are active research works in developing microscale propulsion systems. In this study, gas flows in nozzles with size of milli and sub-millimeter are investigated by using a CFD code based on the Navier-Stokes equations. The prediction results were compared with theoretical results of quasi-one-dimensional nozzle flow and experiment data. In general, theoretical values agree very well with the CFD results. However, theoretical values begin to deviate from the CFD and experimental data for relatively small Reynolds numbers and the nozzle shape with rectangular cross section. The primary reason for this discrepancy is due to the existence of the thick boundary layer at the wall in low Reynolds flows.

The fluid induced vibration (FIV) phenomena of a 2-D.O.F airfoil system have been investigated in low Reynolds number incompressible flow region. Unsteady flows with viscosity are computed using two-dimensional incompressible Navier-stokes code. To validate developed Navier-Stokes code, steady and unsteady flow fields around airfoil are analyzed. The present fluid/structure interaction analysis is based on the most accurate computational approach with computational fluid dynamics (CSD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) techniques. The highly nonlinear fluid/structure interaction phenomena due to severe flow separations have been analyzed fur the low Reynolds region (R$_{N}$ =500~5000) that has a dominancy of flow viscosity. The effect of R$_{N}$ on the fluid/structure coupled vibration instability of 2-DOF airfoil system is presented and the effect of initial angle of attack on the dynamic instability are also shown.own.

The present work focuses on the unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelastic properties of a small-medium sized wind-turbine blade operating under ideal conditions. A tapered/twisted blade representative of commercial blades used in an experiment setup at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is considered. The aerodynamic loads are computed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques. For this purpose, FLUENT$^{(R)}$, a commercial finite-volume code that solves the Navier-Stokes and the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, is used. Turbulence effects in the 2D simulations are modeled using the Wilcox k-w model for validation of the CFD approach. For the 3D aerodynamic simulations, in a first approximation, and considering that the intent is to present a methodology and workflow philosophy more than highly accurate turbulent simulations, the unsteady laminar Navier-Stokes equations were used to determine the unsteady loads acting on the blades. Five different blade pitch angles were considered and their aerodynamic performance compared. The structural dynamics of the flexible wind-turbine blade undergoing significant elastic displacements has been described by a nonlinear flap-lag-torsion slender-beam differential model. The aerodynamic quasi-steady forcing terms needed for the aeroelastic governing equations have been predicted through a strip-theory based on a simple 2D model, and the pertinent aerodynamic coefficients and the distribution over the blade span of the induced velocity derived using CFD. The resulting unsteady hub loads are achieved by a first space integration of the aeroelastic equations by applying the Galerkin's approach and by a time integration using a harmonic balance scheme. Comparison among two- and three- dimensional computations for the unsteady aerodynamic load, the flap, lag and torsional deflections, forces and moments are presented in the paper. Results, discussions and pertinent conclusions are outlined.
