A numerical analysis of axisymetric backward facing step main nozzle flow in air jet loom has been accomplished. To obtain basic design data for an optimum main nozzle for an air-jet loom and to predict the transonic/supersonic flow, a characteristic based upwind flux difference splitting compressible Navier-Stokes method has been used. The wall static pressure of the main nozzle and the flow velocity changes in the nozzle tube were analyzed by changing air tank pressures and acceleration tube lengths. The flow inside the nozzle experiences double choking one at the needle tip and the other at the acceleration tube exit at tank pressures over $4kg_f/cm^2$. The tank pressure $P_t$ leading to the critical condition depends on the acceleration tube length; i.e, $P_t$ is higher for longer acceleration tubes. The $P_t$ value required to bring the acceleration tube exit to the critical condition is nearly constant regardless of acceleration tube length. The round needle tip shape might lead to less total pressure loss when compared with step shape.
Performance characteristics of an axial flow fan having distorted inlet flow have been investigated using numerical analysis as well as experiment. Two kinds of hub-cap, round shape and right-angled front shape, are tested to investigate the effect of inlet flow distortion on the fan performance. In case of right-angled front shape, axisymmetric distorted inflow is induced by flow separation at the sharp edge of hub-cap, and the characteristics of the inflow depends on the distance between hub-cap and blade leading edge. Flow analysis of the blade passage is peformed by solving the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. numerical solutions are validated in comparison with experimental data measured by a five-hole probe downstream of the fan rotor. It is found from the numerical results that non-uniform axial inlet velocity profile near the hub results in the change of inlet flowangle. The changed inlet flow angle near the hub invokesa flow separation on the blade surfaces, thus deteriorating the fan efficiency. The effect of the distance between hub-cap and blade leading edge on the efficiency is also discussed.

This paper describes performance enhancement of a regenerative blower used for a 20 kW fuel cell system. Two design variables, bending angle of an impeller and blade thickness of an impeller tip, which are used to define an impeller shape, are introduced to enhance the blower performance. Internal flow of the regenerative blower has been analyzed with three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the blower performance. General analysis code, CFX, is introduced in the present work. SST turbulence model is employed to estimate the eddy viscosity. Throughout the numerical analysis, it is found that the thickness of impeller tip is effective to increase the blower efficiency in the present blower. Pressure is successfully increased up to 2.8% compared to the reference blower at the design flow condition. And efficiency is also enhanced up to 2.98 % compared to the reference one. It is noted that low velocity region disturbs to make strong recirculation flow inside the blade passages, thus increases local pressure loss. Detailed flow field inside the regenerative blower is also analyzed and compared.
Friction reduction between machine components is important for improving their efficiency and lifespan. In recent years, surface texturing has received considerable attention as a viable means to enhance the efficiency and tribological performance of highly sliding mechanical components such as parallel thrust bearings, mechanical face seals, and piston rings. In this study, we perform lubrication analysis to investigate the effect of dimple shapes and orientations on the lubrication characteristics of a surface textured parallel thrust bearing. Numerical analysis involves solving the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. We use dimples consisting of hemispherical and different semiellipsoidal orientations for simulation. We compare pressure and streamline distributions, load capacity, friction force, and leakage flowrate for different numbers of dimples and orientations. We find that the dimple shapes, orientations, and their numbers starting from an inlet influence the lubrication characteristics. The results show that partial texturing of the bearing inlet region, and the ellipsoidal dimples with the major axis aligned along the lubricant flow direction exhibit the best lubrication characteristics in terms of higher load capacity and lower friction. The results can be used in the design of optimum dimple characteristics for parallel thrust bearings, for which further research is required.

In this study, flow-induced vibration(FIV) analyses have been conducted for a 3D compressor blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics(CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responses of designed compressor blades. Fluid domains are modeled using the computational grid system with local grid deforming and remeshing techniques. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating compressor model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D compressor blade for fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problems. Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous pressure contours on the blade surfaces considering flow-separation effects are presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the rotating compressor blade.

A numerical technique for simulating the separation dynamics of strap-on boosters jettisoned in the dense atmosphere is presented. Six degree of freedom rigid body equations of motion are integrated into the three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes solution procedure to determine the dynamic motions of strap-ons. An automated Chimera overlaid grid technique is introduced to achieve maximum efficiency for multi-body dynamic motion and a domain division technique is implemented in order to reduce the computational cost required to find interpolation points in the Chimera grids. The flow solver is validated by comparing the computed results around the Titan IV launch vehicle with experimental data. The complete analysis process is then applied to the. H-II launch vehicle, the central rocket in japans space program, the CZ-3C launch vehicle developed in China and the KSR-III, a three-stage sounding rocket being developed in Korea. From the analyses, separation trajectories of strap-on boosters are predicted and aerodynamic characteristics around the vehicles at every time interval are examined. In addition, separation-impulse devices generally introduced for safe separation of strap-ons are properly modeled in the present paper and the jettisoning force requirements are examined quantitatively.
The hydraulic performance analysis of an entire pump system composed of inducer, impeller, volute and seal for the application of turbopumps is numerically performed using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. A quasi-steady mixing-plane method is used on the impeller/volute interface to simulate the unsteady interaction phenomena. From this work, the effects of each component on the pump performance are investigated at design and off-design conditions through the analysis of flow structures and loss mechanisms. The computational results are in a good agreement with experimental ones in terms of the headrise and efficiency even though very complex flow structures are present. It is found that the asymmetric pressure distribution along the volute wall constitutes the main reason of the difference between experimental and computational results, due to the limitation of the quasi-steady method. Since the volute was found to be over-designed by the pressure distribution of the volute wall, re-design of the volute has been performed, resulting in an improved performance characteristic.

In this study, we performed three-dimensional CFD analysis to investigate the effect of the rotor blade sweep of a partial admission supersonic turbine on the stage performance and the flow field. The computations are conducted for three different sweep cases, No sweep(NSW), Backward sweep(BSW), and Forward sweep(FSW), using flow analysis program, FLUENT 6.3 Parallel. The results of the BSW model show reduced mass flow rates of tip leakage and increased total-to-static efficiency. The strength of leading edge bow shock was decreased a little with BSW model. And the BSW model also shows a good performance around the hub region compared to other models.

In this paper, the computational analysis of open-water characteristics for three model propellers(P4119, P4842 and 3 podded propeller of KRISO) is done by using a viscous-flow method based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The results are presented for open-water performances, blade-section pressures, and circumferentially-averaged velocity profiles for the all three propeller models. Overall close agreements with available experimental data are shown. However, some discrepancies are also found in the pressure near the leading edge of the propeller blade and the open-water performance of the podded propellers.

A Numerical analysis method is developed in order to compute the flaw and wave field for 2-dimensional floating body in the free roll motion with 3 degrees of freedom. Navier-Stokes and continuity equations are gaverning equations in tire present study. Finite Difference method is introduced to discretize the governing equation. The free surface is traced by the interface tracking method and the grid system is fitted to boundaries including free surface and body surface, which is moving in the flow field. The numerical scheme is based on Maker and Cell method. For the sake of validation of the numerical method, the computed roll decay factors according to tire midship section shapes are compared with measured results. The numerical results are discussed in order to understand the effect of midship section shape on roll motion.
